    • FF Help:Chimera and Ship Prefs

Hello all from an ex-avid evo player who has just picked the game up again. I just started the ff plug and am somewhat stuck. I'm on the mission where I'm supposed to go to Ras to rescue aCargo Pod (CX9?) from inside a Chimera. My problem is that I still just have my shuttle, very little money, and the only missions available to me are simple, generic salvage missions. Incidentally, my shuttle has a fuel capacity to accomidate me just as far as Ras, then I run out. So I have 2 questions. First, are there mission strings I could do right now other than this (don't spoil them please, just yes or no)? Also, is there a ship I should hold out for such as the Tach. Fighter in FH, or should I buy a new ship, and if so, which ships are preferred by some of the more veteren players? Sorry that was a whole lot for just one post, but if you could help me with any of it I would greatly appreciate it. Thanx

    • Sorry, I have no answer for you, but I commend you. Asking just if the missions exist, and not what exactly they are, is a sign of a true gamer. You rule. šŸ˜„

    • Answer second first: I suggest you use exactly the same ship as you did in FH before the T.F.; to First: Of Course.

I just love Thunderstorms. I'm s+e+a+r+c+h+i+n+g for them, ok.?

    • Well, I suggest saving up (hey, no time limit) for a Cargo Shuttle (very cheap, can find @ Minkar Orbiter) then outfitting it with 1 plasma bolt (+ launcher) and a flare launcher with some flares. I'll leave the rest to you, cause from there you be able to find out what to do...

When the power level is high enough, I'll reset the feedback power breaker and dump the energy right into the initiator intake on the engine power systems."
      "What?!"
"Jump-start it," Han said. "I'm going to jumpstart it."

    • Hey my ship in EVO is named Chimera, after Grand Admiral Trawn's flagship in the Dark force rising starwars trilogy

    • The Chimera mission is quite possibly one of the most insanly difficult one's I've ever seen.

There are three things you must remember in the mission:

      1. See those big disk things? One hit and you're dead.
      2. See the big disk thing that's shooting out big disk things? One hit and it's basically dead.
      3. You must board the Chimera.

A flare launcher (or even better, the inexpensive Dust Cloud Thingamajig) will decoy exactly one out of every three disks shot. This leaves two horrendously fast long-lasting projectiles on your bottom. You might consider using long range weapons at this time, but guided missiles have a 0% chance of hitting and heavy rockets are about a billion times too powerful.

Unless you're some sort of god you've no chance in heck of beating this thing in a shuttle; it simply doesn't have the manoueverability needed to outwit the disks. (By the way, why go for a Combat Shuttle when the wonderful Mars Explorer is available to you? Nice armor, free tractor beam, and NINE jumps of fuel. This is the best ship to start off with in FH and FF hands down.) You might be able to do it in a tricked out Mars Explorer with afterburner and plasma pods, but I tried for about a day before giving up. I recommend you go in with one of the advanced fighter models (specifically the model used by Baron Mordillo), zip in at top speed, and rip off a very short burst of plasma pods. Remember: this thing is significanly less armored than a shuttle, and will explode very easily; shoot carefully.

Missions? That one's pretty early in the game if I recall correctly; you might have to stick with cargo runs. However, do watch out for an opportunity to join a shipping company, do investigate the most north-western planet for criminal activity, and....actually it's been so long since I've played it I can't remember anymore, sorry.

As for better ships, stick with a tricked out Mars Explorer for as long as possible. It's got the cargo space and (most vitally) the range you need to do most of the missions. You won't need any other ship until you get an offer for a super-ship later on. Sorry, no Tach Fighter for you in this game, although Lars may make a cameo or two. If he does, stay faaaaar away from him when there are hostiles in the area since he's trigger happy and has the super-neem-cannon of doom.

      Y'know, maybe I should write a player's guide for this....nah....

    • Okay...

Flares have always worked for me... here's my plan...

      &Me;

      *TARGET

      ---------------------

      &ME;

      *WEAPON

      *TARGET

      ---------------

      & ME

      *WEAPON

      *TARGET

      -------------

I circle for a while, then go right to the target (auto-pilot)

Hit it with a plasma bolt, then hit flares and wait for the weapon to come to me!

      From there, it's easy!

      RECOMMENED CRAFT: CARGO SHUTTLE
RECOMMENED UPGRADES: RAMSCOOP, PLASMA BOLTS, FLARES

      Sorry if that's confusing!

    • Yes, there are other mission strings.
But as long as you manage to keep out of the way of those "duplicate" Chimeras, the "original" is not all that hard to sort out.
No spoiling intended, but some weaponry and a fast ship might be of help.

Don't know about any ships to be aimed for, but if you solve a particular mission, someone gives you some equipment that allows any large ship
to pass between systems in one day.
I'm quite happy with my heavily upgraded "Condittori" cruiser, but I'm stuck with a much later mission at the moment.
Oh, well. I'll sort it out sooner or later.
