Well, kiddies, come, gather round the fire and listen to ol' man Flatty ramble off his wisdom (heh... jus' kiddin!!)
anyway... I was thinking of something that might work in theory...
let's say you had a big ship that you needed to be damaged..... here's what you do. Get a small escort, one that doesn't attack enemy ships. When you're about 1 screen away from your enemy, do the option tab thing until you get to your escort. Fire off SAE's or SAD's at it. Notice how they spin around it but don't hit it. Now, superfast, charge at the enemy ship. Your escort with it's super halo of SAE's will crash into the enemy and all the sae's will blow up and bye bye enemy.
I haven't actually tested this out yet... I know that the SAE's spin around escorts for a while, and then they disappear... but, somehow my mind led me to this weird strategy. Give it a try, see if you like it. Then try it with hunter missiles or something powerful.
Once again, a little bit of knowledge passed down the family tree. Enjoy

"The truth?"
"There is no spoon"
