    • EVO Stories...?

Ok, I'm gonna appologise in advance to Jude. Please don't kill me.

Has anyone got any EVO Stories out there that they'd like me to post on my poor, starving EVO Stories page? The Chronicles section is a bit of a mess ducks so I thought I'd have a crack at it from this angle.

Any stories should be sent to me as PLAIN TEXT at:

      (url="http://"http://mailto:grybs@grybs.com")grybs@grybs.com(/url)

And will probably appear on my site within a week, if not a couple of days. I don't "grandstand" anyone's stories, so that eliminates the months of waiting the Chronicles boasts.

Anyone interested, the site is at:

      (url="http://"http://www.grybs.com/evo/stories.html")http://www.grybs.com/evo/stories.html(/url)

      Ok?

Why does everyone have some quasi-amusing quote at the end of their signature file?

    • That sounds good.
It's annoying having to wait for the EVO chronicles.
I have to wait another month for mine to get on there.

      ------------------

    • Great!

Now can I please re-emphasise what I said about PLAIN TEXT.

If you could just send it through again... please.

    • Nathan:

I have your story. I'll post it tomorrow morning, when I get up.

It's 2 am here now, so I'm gonna go and get a little sleep...

hmmm... how is the Chronicles area a mess?

We delay the release of articles only so that each one can have a chance to be the "new" story for a week.

    • Kill you, Grybs? I'm a peaceful trader! 🆒

Everyone: don't forget that even if you have posted your stories elsewhere, you should still send them to the Chronicles so that they can be archived there for EV/O posterity.

    • A mess?

Hmm... I'm gonna have a hard time justifying that one, aren't I?

Let's see... I think the way it's presented is probably the biggest problem. Since it's all organised (or appears to be - if I'm wrong, I'm also sorry) by a UBB sort-of system, there's no rationality to it. Thus Jake101 has all sorts of posts there, as part of his A Hidden Legacy story, chapters just strewn all over the place.

My suggestion would be to compile the entire story into one place.

And his is just an example. There are loads of those sort of things... plus a whole load of stuff that isn't finished work, and doesn't even resemble finished work. And of course, although the idea of allowing each story to be "new" for a while is admirable, it's also frustrating for the people who have to wait months for their story to get there.

When I first went there (ages and ages ago) I found it very confusing at first. Since there's no pattern to the "subject" or rather "title" fields, it's difficult to find what you're looking for. And assuming you do, it's displayed in a long, narrow column on the left. Unless, of course, you have a larger monitor (I use an iMac, so I suffer a bit here) that is.

Now, I'm not trying to "have a go" at you... or the Chronicles section here. Please don't mistake this for anything other than hopefully constructive criticism...

On another subject, the next two chapters of Jade's Return, Jake101 (Scott Lee) 's latest work are currently online at my site. So people who can't wait to read them should head over to:

      (url="http://"http://www.grybs.com/evo/stories.html")http://www.grybs.com/evo/stories.html(/url)

      etc.

Yeah, that's pretty typical of how installment-based stories used to be done; stories that were published serialy in monthly magazines, etc.

If the stories we all submitted at once, I agree with you, they should all be released at once and treated as one block; that would indeed make more sense.

I just think it would make more sense for your to suggest improvements to what we have going on than to try to make a new story board that likely few people will see (just being realistic).

    • Grybs' place isn't a 'new story board'. It's an EV:O fan website, like many others. It features articles, plugins and some nice grpahics. The stories available are listed in an index, and they're mostly complete works, not odd chapters. Plus they feature a bit of HTML. Sorry el Presidente but it's actually a much nicer story venue than the Ambrosia offering.

But I've got a bare chest
      I do some talking
      My phaser does the rest
      Don't like your tentacles
      Don't like your face
      Don't like your planet
Think I'll lay it to waste
      'Coz I'm Rambo in Space
      Yeah, I'm Rambo in Space"

    • Hmmm... and I have a "Voinian Kill" section too. Don't know why I'm getting thanks from a son of Borb, but thank you anyway, Mr. Ambassador.

He's right... all my site is is a fan site. I've got a "stories" page, which is really just a simple list of stories that people can click on. I make a point of carefully formatting the stories that get sent in, providing them with graphical dividers and tables where necessary. Completely hand-coded, so it's time-consuming.

But I'm not trying to make it an alternative to yours, Andrew. I think that to be impossible anyway, since many people will always view Ambrosia-hosted stuff as "official" and therefore "better" - which it may or may not be. I'd use "different" at the moment.

As for suggestions, is it not possible to compile things like A Hidden Legacy into one place? Or does the UBB Admin package not allow for such things...? Just little touches like that would make all the difference. And when I mentioned a "lack of a pattern" in the subject/title lines, I meant that people should be encouraged to write somthing like "EV, A Trader's Paradise, John Smith" or "EVO, Nebula Dust, Grybs" or somthing like that. Game, Title, Name. It'd make it a lot easier to find the stuff you're looking for.

And perhaps, when you click on it, it could load in a new page, without the nav. bar thing on the right? That would make it easier for people on iMacs.

Just suggestions... and I appreciate that due to the UBB system, they may not be possible. But does the chmoding prevent you from opening them by hand, using an online editor, and changing the HTML there? It would be time-consuming though, and I appreciate you have better things to do (like working on EV3 - heh).

So there we are. My suggestions. Please feel free to take them on board, to make them walk the plank, or to ignore them. Whichever suits you...

      ...I'm just an entheusiast.

    • A very well done fan sight.
I just want to say the sights really good, went on to see if you posted my story and was quite impressed.

      I'm not evil
      Just very unkind!!!

      ------------------

    • Your story was posted within 10 hours.

The reason it took so long was that I needed some sleep. I recieved it at around 2:30 AM, had it all coded by 3 AM. That was actually a very short coding time, mainly because the story was really short. Stories like Jade's Return take a lot, lot longer. Plus, you gave me your's as a Word doc. I didn't have to de-email it first. I posted it online as I ate my breakfast the next day.

I generally (when sleep doesn't interfere) get stories posted within a few hours of them being sent to me.

Um... perhaps you've secured my loyalties because you're hosting one of my stories? 🙂 I was inspired to write some EVO stuff after I read of the exploits of Flurp Bloggson, so in a way I think it's nice that my work ended up on your site.

Of course, I may write an article called 'Fourteen Noisy Ways to Kill a Human' at some point in the future...

    • Grybes, the next part will be longer that first part was just an intro. To show what the next parts will focus around. Thats why it was short.

Any way next time do you want it via a Word attachment or just on the e-mail.

(No fancy computer terms by me only got on a Mac 6 mounths ago) 😄

      Hope you like(d) it!

I read it before you told me you wrote it. It was cool!

P.S. Are you going to write more of that story?

    • You know the increased popularity of my Stories page, along with the demands that Harzius Productions is inflicting on my life, have actually conspired to give me a backlog of stuff I need to do for my stories page.

Rest assured, I'll do my best to pull myself out of it...
