    • The EVO missiles (again)

Ok, lets get this straight. You guys are saying that the graphics for the missiles don't matter, it's only killing guys that makes the game fun. Well then I've got an idea. I'll make a plugin with missiles that look like turds, and ships that are square boxes with engines! From what you say, it would not matter if they looked like that. Only if they were really powerful and could KILL good. Destroying your enemies makes a game fun, but so good graphics. I mean COME ON the missiles look like they are from some old 3D game. Ectoplasms! Caterpillars! Bashi-bazouks! Freshwater swabs! Parasites! Baboons! Cowards! Pockmarks!

    • Wow... seems my last flame of your post sent you over the edge a little bit. Sheeeesh. Get over it. What makes escape velocity cool is how the game runs and how the game is played. What the damn missiles look like in the outfit shop does not matter. I shall repeat: What the damn missiles look like in the outfit shop does not matter.

Capish? Now, in EV3, that might be a different story, but for now, please shut up and don't give us all such a open and free chance to slame your stupidity.

    • Well, it's really very simple.

A game that has good graphics, yet terrible gameplay, sucks. Example: Rebel Assault II. Stunning graphics (for its time), full-screen cutscenes and other graphic goodies, but little in the way of gameplay and a fair plot at best.

A game that has mediocre/poor graphics, but good gameplay, often excels. There are dozens of examples: EV, Exile/Avernum, and so on.

A game that has excellent graphics and excellent gameplay rules. A rare combo, though.

Nope. Can't honestly back you up on that. All the games that I regularly play have okay to bad graphics. My all-time reigning favorite game that I have played for 5 years or so, and still haven't gotten tired of is Nethack (www.nethack.org), and that uses ASCII symbols to represent things!

Erm, I didn't read the post that got this all started, but I agree with the sentiment. No, I don't care what the missile looks like in the outfit dialogue.

    • you have no clue whatever. it doesn't matter if the graphics are minimal as long that the gameplay is good. nobody cares about the graphics very much so go to mental instute or just shut up, go play another, and get a life

      ------------------

    • Yeah I know all that, Realmz dosen't have the best graphics either but I think it's cool. I don't know how to put it. I guess though now I'll stop caring about the graphics for my EVO plug-in because all of you say graphics don't matter.

Well here comes some (!) reinforcement from across the ocean for you Troopa: I agree with you guys that the primary purpose of the game surely isn't to transform your beloved Mac into some kind of gallery or something. On the other hand I do think - in respect of the little amount of effort it would actually take to design some better-looking outfit-pics - that the looks of EV/EVO are more than just important to the all-over feeling! I created a lot of Plug-Ins myself, and all the major changes were graphical. I enjoy playing the game to this very moment, not only, but also because of that fact! Troopa is certainly right when he says, some stupid flying cubes (ok, I know... the Apple Cube really IS cute 🙂 ) would drain a lot of the atmosphere out of this fabulous game. Seriously, are you really certain, it wouldn't? I doubt it! So please, Troopa, DO NOT put less time into your graphs! At least I would be very thankful! Greetings from Europe 🆒

    • Alright, my two cents. Eye candy is great I love it. Without good gameplay, however, it's irrelevant. If you're doing a plug, get the plot right first, we'll play it and love it. If you've then got the time/inclination to add some sweet graphics, we'll play it and love , err, well you. Graphics are always secondary, but if you can be bothered with then they're well worth the while.

      ------------------

    • Having said that, graphics in the outfit shop are not even secondary. They'll make me smile once, twice max. Guess that means that they're not even tertiary :).

Well, I NEVER said that good graphs are MORE important than the actual game play (ideas, plot etc.). I'd rather say that in most games one cannot exist without the other: A good idea should come along with a good layout. Maybe you guys can explain to me why there has been designed such an "unnecessary" case for the iMac or the G3/G4 series? Or even the Cube? BECAUSE IT LOOKS GOOD! I can't understand you! Don't tell me you don't like your Mac because of its looks! We're all Apple users! And good design has always been one of the diretives for Apple. am I wrong? Why shouldn't this also work for computer games that are as good as Ambrosia's? 🙂

As Haile Selassie might have said, 'Calm Dowwn'. I'll say it again. I love eye candy. As far as I can see, most of us (me anyway, very different thing, I know) are saying that nice visuals are great, but not as important as gameplay. If we've gotta have one we'll go for the latter. Both, is very nice though

      ------------------

    • Incidentally, err, Andrew(?), any chance of fixing the way in which the final smileys only turn up as text commands. Some of us are very visually oriented and it all gets a bit annoying actually when the graphics in our messages get screwed up into err no nothing, look just ignore me, alright.

      ------------------

    • I had a plug which came on an old MacFormat CD, offering some new outfits for EVO. When I dropped it in and checked them out, all the outfit pics were just black squares with white text saying 'picture not available'. I thought "Eww! - cheap and nasty plug"... and removed it.

If you're making a plug and you're really committed to it, you're going to make at least some attempt at unique graphics for it. Otherwise, people like me will take one look at your work and think: "Here's something cheap, nasty and half-finished. It'll probably screw up my pilot file or something."

Yes... game-play is the most important thing, but nice graphics are important too, especially to people who use Macs and are used to a bit of quality in their computing. 'picture not available' does not cut it. If somebody out there is totally desperate for some images to finish off an otherwise complete plug-in, mail me.

Someones been reading Tin Tin! You forgot me favouritw: POLYNESIANS! If that's how you spell it. Captin Haddock is one of the best literary figures of the 20th century in my opinion. I've got every single Tin Tin book including the much saught after Tin Tin in Russia, the first Tin Tin book.

Oh and by the way, look at Tetris, more addictive than pringles but graphics shytter than a cow with dysentry.
