      Wouldn't it be nice if acceleration was based on the mass of your ship?

      If you launched (or lost) all your parasite fighters, you could then accelerate faster because your ship's all-up mass has changed. If you fired off all your rockets, you would be better able to run for it, because your ship would be more manoeuverable. The same would be true for your foes, of course.

      Related idea: Rather than a stock engine and the option of one or two upgrades, how about if you could swap out the ship's power plant completely? If you /want/ to cram a Carrier's engines in a Turncoat, go for it! It'd move fast, but not leave much space for weapons. Etc, etc. Me, I'd put a Krait engine in a dreadnought, and see how long it takes to get from Earth to the Moon...

    • I think acceleration shoul be based on the power of your engines as compared to your mass. Say a Krait engine accelerates a 50 ton object at 300 units/second. If you put that in a 1500 ton ship, Dreadnought for example, it would accelerate at 1 units/second. If a unit is a kilometer, the Krait is accelerating at a reasonable speed, 18000 kilometers/hour, and the Dreadnought is also accelerating at a reasonable speed, 60 kilometers/hour. That may seem fast to you StarTrek, and Star Wars geeks, but StarTrek, and StarWars aren't very realistic. In space distances are HUGE. Nasa says that in the asteroid belt (Oort Cloud and Keiper Belt included), there is a very low frequency of asteroids large enough to fly through Earths atmosphere and not get destroyed. In EV, there is a very high frequency of Asteroids, some larger than your ship, implying that the ships in EV can move incredibly fast. I hope this makes sense. I forgot how to calculate Acceleration, but its obvious enough.

    • I think that any of us who've given it any thought would say that the physics in EV are a bit questionable. Doesn't matter! The way it is, with ships the size of planets and all that, it works very nicely. It's a very playable game. However, I still think I should be able to choose to fly a stripped-down crescent warship, with few guns, no secondaries and a lot of empty space inside... in order to outrun the conventional ones. That way, a new dimension would be added to equipment choice.

      The deHavilland Mosquito in WWII was such a craft - no defensive turrets, less crew than a typical bomber, and the weight saved allowed higher speeds. A very successful machine, for bombing, interception and non-combat tasks. In EV, you strip down a ship and it still flies the same.
