I have not been able to access the area above the cliff above the crypt that is protected by half a dozen blue ghost like figures. Could somebody please give me some guidance??

The key is on the 3ed level of the learning tree. Do the elf missions tell you get a special shield, then show the shield to the druid at the tree, do his mission then you can get it.

Have you found the learning tree and talked with the druid? If so, this is where the
missions begin that culminate in you being able to gain access to the 3rd level of the
tree and be able to ultimately win the game.If you have spoken with the druid and completed the quest to gain access to the first
level of the tree, then you should have one of two quests in your quest log. Either
you will have a quest entitled "Orders" in which you need to go into the learning tree
and ask the book about "Orders." Once you do this you will need to ask the book about
"Order of Seasons." The book will tell you about the plains of endless winds and about
the order of mages that used to live there.You will now need to find the plains of endless winds and locate a member of the missing
order. This person is an Elf named Orobas who will send you on many missions, one of
which includes finding the Milla'kara shield. When you have the shield you will take
it back to the druid who will send you on a final quest, and when you complete it, will
give you access to the 3rd level of the learning tree. On the 3rd level you will get
the key you need.If you need a more direct spoiler ask and it will be given.

So how does one get to the Plains of Endless Winds? I've tried heading out west but can't seem to get across the darn river...
As Flandarg said just head south of Berglum. The plains of endless winds is not south
of Verandeep Lake. When you head south from Berglum(or southwest from the Bridge you
helped to finish) the scenery will change from forest to plains, and you will get a
funky wind background music. This is the plains of endless winds.There is a small river that snakes through it, and there is a bridge to cross the
river. This is on a map that is filled with trolls and molespiders. I believe just
across the bridge is a sign that says there are ruins to the east and Verandeep lake to
the south. Go east to find the ruins and search there thoroughly to find the Order of
the Seasons.I hope this helps. If you need more direct directions ask and we can give you specific
