Let's assume you have never played EVO. What would be the first thing you would do, followed by the second, third, ect?

FIRST DO SOME OF THE JOBS ON THE MISSION BOARD TILL YOU HAVE ENUOGH MONEY TO GET A BETER CARGO SHIP. THEN START A TRADE ROUTE LIKE BUYING FERTILISER FROM ATLANTIC STATION AND SELLING IT AT FIRST CENTAURI FOR A BIG BIG PROFIT. KEEP DOING THAT AND GET BIGGER CARGO SHIPS AS YOU CAN AFFORD, UNTILL YOU HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO GET A SHIP THAT CAN WIN SOME BATLES. THEN GO ROB SOME RENEGADES!

1. Land on Earth. Go to the bar, accept the mission you find there.
2. After finishing said mission, check out mission computers for rush deliveries near you.
3. Run cargo for awhile. Go to New Chicago. Accept the Stellar Corp. mission. Make sure you complete it on time.
4. Run RUSH MISSIONS ONLY! Make at least 100,000 credits. Buy a scoutship, add an afterburner.
5. Go north to the unexplored regions beyond Saalia. Have fun!

I'm waiting for the day when "this side up" arrows appear on grocery bags.
...then turn off capslock
Note: This post contains spoilers for EVO's basic plotlines. Only read this if you don't mind losing some of the suspense.
Most of the early missions are designed to set you up for the later missions. Do the UE recruitment mission and run cargo in the safer (ie. UE core) systems until you can afford at least a few upgrades for your shuttle - start with survival mods (afterburner, density scanner, extra tanks etc.) and just accept the fact that the shuttle is not a ship of war. You survive this phase of the game by running from trouble wherever possible. Do the StellarCorp recruitment missions (because they pay well), available at New Chicago, and go North out of UE space to find the Miranu (you'll need extra tanks and/or fuel scoops for this. Better still, get a scoutship) and do the Miranu contact missions (because they really pay well. The Miranu are peaceful - you have to try hard to really upset them - but they have nice ships if you have the money.
The UE Anti-Voinian string starts in the UE core, and the early part of this can be done in a non-combat vessel, but the later stages require something which can hold it's own in a fight. It's just about possible to use a Helian, but you're better off spending at least a million on the ship, plus another 250-500k minumum on outfits. More is better. You'll also find the Free-Huron string in the same area. The Emalgha missions are closely linked to these - go north from UE space until you run into some Jules-Verne-style wooden spacecraft. They finish off the UE string.
Choice of weapons: much argument about this, but if you're going to be fighting the Voinians you don't want Miranu Phase weapons, because they're hopeless vs. armour. Either stick with blaze cannon, buy Voinian Neutron weapons (available when you've completed the Paaren station string) or just buy loads of rockets
Following this up - the Strand War. Phase weapons are great for this.
Anything I've missed?
