I'm trying to work my way through The Dig. As I read this forum there are references to "shoot upwards", 'blast through the ceiling" and such. How do you blast through a surface that's above you?

Hit the "up" button and then shoot. In some places you'll find that you can shoot while climbing upwards. That's probably what was being referred to.
