    • What editor to use???

Every freakin' time I try to use EV-Edit to create my plug-in, sooner or later it decides "Hmm, he's gotten a lot accomplished. I'd better stop working." Either EV:O crashes when I run the plug-in or it doesn't load it, i.e. it's as if the plug-in isn't even there. There are many things that I simply couldn't do with ResEdit, like linking descriptions to objects and tweaking the system map. EV-Edit is so much easier to use, but all of my plug-ins are worthless! I'm using version 3.2, the latest version I think, and I'm not using any support files (I learned not to do that the hard way), or trying to make an EV plug-in work with EV:O or anything stupid like that. How do I get a reliable plug-in? 😕

      Use ResEdit.
Or, if you have the bucks to spend, get Resorcerer.
For placing systems and spobs visually, use EVO Developers' Map. Everything else can be done with ResEdit or Resorcerer.

EV-Edit is notoriously unreliable. A few people have managed to produce plugs with it, but most of us do not consider it worth the trouble.

    • Thanks, Joe. Perhaps I'm whining too much, but are there any other programs out there that anyone knows of that are EV:O editting oriented? Isn't there an EEVO or something being worked on? I'd really like to combine the ease-of-use of EV-Edit with the versatility/reliablility of ResEdit. A better editor should be written; of course I'm not capable of making one.

      What a greedy, self-centered...

I know, I know. But isn't there something better?

    • The only editor that most people here give HDD-room to is called Schmelta, if I remember rightly. It has limited functionality, but what it promises, it achieves. EV-Edit can really screw up your files, and should probably be avoided. It's useful for snooping at things, but if you try to make changes and save them, you can end up with an EVO program that does nothing but crash and/or pilot files you'll never be able to use again.

Wrong a couple of times, Mr. Ambassador. Schmelta-V is primarily a missions editor for EV. It claims a few other functions, but is reported to be unreliable for those. (I haven't used it enough to know.) It can be made to work for EVO through some workarounds. EV-Edit is dangerous to use even for snooping; merely opening a file with Ev-Edit can corrupt it. The only reliable general-purpose editors are ResEdit and Resorceror. For system and spob editing there is now EVO Developers' Map which is by far the best tool yet for creating systems.
