I was having a grand ol' time, gunning down renegade Helians and Turncoats. But I eventually got tired of that and pressed on to do some missions. But now, everywhere I go, three or four renegade ships warp into the sector and attack me. They're usually small stuff; a few Kraits or Crescent Fighters, but it's in every_single_system, even Sol! I can't get any peace! What can I do?

At the time you would have been warned to watch out for the ship's escorts, or is that EV. Anyway, if you've destroyed it, you've not gone back for your credits, if you haven't, shame on you :), and if you can't be bothered, abort the mission.

There is another possiblity, other than trying to destroy a renegade ship. If I remember correctly while I was looking for Anna Bolshime (spelling is wrong but you get the point - she's the UE warship designer). I was followed for half of forever until I went to the right system to get that mission series moving on.

Having escorts seems to bring pirates out of the woodwork too. If you have 2 or more escorts, a couple fighters follow you around wherever you go faithfully. To dispose of them, simply release an escort or two. Of course, having a few renegades following you can be incredibly beneficial to your legal status - blow them up in hostile (non-renegade, of course) systems, up goes your legal status. My brother used this technique to rob freighters - when the system became offended, he blew away a few pirates.
