    • plugin possibility?

I was wondering if it would be possible to create a plugin where the player's ship would change to reflect the properties (ie, look like, have the same stats as) a government ship of that system. for example, if you jumped into fed space, you'd look/act like a fed destroyer, in polaris space, you'd look/act like a dragon.

      Not possible.
Edit. I stand corrected. Possible, just requires a good amount of work.

    • A shame, really. This is a reason an "OnEnter" operation would be nice. Of course, why bother?

    • I don't think that's possible with our limited rescorces.

but even if it was, it doesn't seem like a very entertaining idea.

I believe it is actually possible but in a very crude way. You just have a bunch of missions that are always active, but invisible that are observation missions, then I forget which tag it is, but the one that changes your ship, so it changes your ship to whichever type on entering the system of a certain government. But you might end up with a problem if you had too many systems, as I think you'd need one mission for each system. Correct me if I'm wrong.
But as was said, this is quite pointless.

We're going on a (url="http://"http://www.saunalahti.fi/hoge/")bear hunt(/url). They'll eat you if you misbehave. They live on an island out to sea. They will chew you up and spit out your bones. We live on the beach with all their rubbish. And people. Bears. Giant bears. They will eat me and you. Run back to the house before they catch us. Wee hee hee can't catch me.

    • Thanks for your feedback, everyone. I know it seems like a kind of dumb idea, but I needed to find out if I could do it for a storyline I'm brainstorming...

If your galaxy governments are set up like those in EVN (or EVO) with blocks of homogenous systems, you only need one mission for each system where you could enter or leave a government.

    • Actually it sounds like a very good idea, and I'm sure within the context of a storyline you could do it.

You can set the special ship goal as being to observe the ship, and you can use the NCB to change the type of ship you are in once the special ship goal is completed. If it's just some kind of weird cloaking device, you'll need to make a collection of ships with the same specs but with varying appearances, and you'll need to have the mission only start if the player is flying the right kind of ship.

Obviously this method will only work in the context of a mission, and you'll need to corral the player a bit, but it would (will) be an awesome effect, especially if you prepare the player by saying 'We've worked out this new cloaking device, but no-one is sure if it will work. We need you to fly to system xxx. If all's well it will adapt itself to the ships there. You can then go on to system yyy, and it should adapt itself to the ships there as well.'

If you give the system almost complete murk, then it will be a few moments before the player realises it's changed, which will heighten the effect.

It would then be nice to have some text come up when you complete the special ship goal, saying something like 'As you enter the system a weird light flashes that you have never seen before. You can't see what it is that's happened, and then you happen to look outside the porthole'.

If you want to really hammer this one, you could have a couple of missions preceding it where they try prototypes which do nothing more than change the ship's colour, leaving the player to be chased out of the system by the offended government.

Any way, good luck with this. It sounds like you have some really creative ideas.

    • It certainly lends itself to some very interesting storyline devices - shapeshifting ships that blend in with their surroundings is a very nice concept. I'd love to see someone implement this effectively - it sounds perfectly possible if slightly fiddly.
