    • Custom making ships for EVN

I have EVNEW, but I haven't yet figured out how to properly design my own ship. I've got the weapons, outfits, some parts of the new star systems, all figured out, but making a new ship is more baffling than anything to me. Anyone care to explain how to make one? Also, is it possible to make new explosions? ie; an explosion that moves otuwards like a shockwave would?

    • This would be better on the EV Developer's Corner forum.

    • Ok...This will be vary basic, and just how to make the most simple ship. And someone else with more EVNEW knowledge will have to finish it.

      Things you´ll need:
      3D modeling program
      Graphics program photoshop recommended
      EVNEW

First you need a 3D model of your ship, and a 3D modeling program able to do animation, not necessary though VERY useful. Since you are on a PC it´s not as useful as it would have been on a mac.

Make sure your model is properly lighted, it should not be black anywhere,

Place your model in the middle of an isometric view (not necessary though this is how the ships in nova are positioned) , keyframe it at frame 0. Then go to frame 35, rotate 350° and keyframe.

      Most large ships are 100 X 100 pixels Fighters are 32 x 32

      Now render the movie.

I assume you are on a PC, so you will now have to lay the frames out manually one by one.
      Place them in 6 colums.

Since you are on a PC you´ll have to make the mask manually too.Though you can always ask a mac user to do it for you. Use the magic wand with a tolerance of 0..select the black are, invert the selection, and fill with white.

Now you have a ship graphic and it´s mask.

This is as far as i can give you instructions, as i´m on a mac. I don´t even know what format to save the pictures in, though PICT is what´s used on mac.

    • Set the 3D graphics program to render the frames out to individual files (frame_00.bmp, frame_01.bmp, frame_36.bmp.) Lossless formats are reccommended. Do not render to an animated format unless you can edit individual frames afterwards.

Before assembling the frames, and preferably before rendering, make sure the ship rotates the correct way (clockwise). I've been burned twice (once with a banking ship >.< ), only realizing my mistake after I get the new ship into Nova.

Assemble your frames into 6 columns.

Now you would perform any size altering effects like (url="http://"http://www.oxy-web.com/evnep/tutorials/_LASIK/lasik.html")LASIK(/url)

      Make the mask.

Save both sprite and mask as .bmp and open EVNEW.

Double click on 'RleD(0)' to make a new RleD resource.
      In the window, File->Import
      Browse to your sprite.
Width is your render width, or 1/2 if you used LASIK.
Height is your render Height, or 1/2 if you used LASIK.
X frames is the number of columns (usually 6)
Y frames is the number of rows (usually 6 or a multiple of 6)
First frame is 1, last frame is X frames times Y frames.
      Click Ok.
The sprite should appear in the window. If it does not, wrong information was entered.
      If it worked, File->Import again
Click on the Mask radio button.
      Browse to your mask.
The rest of the settings should be the same as the sprite.

    • Download some stuff on the Ev Nova download Page. There are much How-to's which are explaining how to do a plug in. I think the best how-to is the Addships text.

He wants to know how to make new ship graphics and new explosion graphics. These aren't necessarily things that he can get from the EVN addons page. Coincidentally, I've compiled a list of programs, as well as pricing information as for them (as of one or two weeks ago).

(Copied from a previous post on a recent thread)

Listed for the most part in ascending price (or estimated price in USD):

      (url="http://"http://www.povray.org")POV-Ray(/url) (free), (url="http://"http://www.wings3d.com")Wings 3D(/url) (free), (url="http://"http://www.blender3d.org")Blender(/url) (free), (url="http://"http://www.alias.com")Alias Maya 5.0 Personal Learning Edition(/url) (free - not full featured w/ watermarks), (url="http://"http://www.softimage.com") Softimage XSI Experience(/url) - PC and Linux only ($19.95 - not full featured w/ less obtrusive watermarks than PLE), (url="http://"http://www.eovia.com/home.jsp")Eovia Carrara Studio 3(/url) ($399), (url="http://"http://www.maxon-computer.com/")Maxon Cinema 4D 8.5(/url) ($595), (url="http://"http://www.strata.com")Strata 3DPro 3.9(/url) ($695), (url="http://"http://www.eovia.com/home.jsp")Eovia Amapi 7 Pro(/url) ($799), (url="http://"http://www.rhino3d.com")Rhinoceros 3.0(/url) - PC only I think ($895), (url="http://"http://www.softimage.com")Softimage 3D 4.0(/url) - PC and Linux (and SGI, but not many people have these) only ($1495), (url="http://"http://www.newtek.com")Newtek Lightwave 3D 7.5 - soon to be 8.0(/url) ($1595), (url="http://"http://www.softimage.com")Softimage XSI(/url) - PC, Linux, and SGI only (no price quoted, but probably more expensive than Lightwave), (url="http://"http://www.alias.com")Alias Maya Complete 5.0(/url) ($1999), (url="http://"http://www.discreet.com")Discreet 3D Studio Max 6(/url) - PC only ($3145), (url="http://"http://www.alias.com")Alias Maya Unlimited 5.0(/url) ($6999)

That's about all I can think of for right now. Note that Alias Maya 5.0 Personal Learning Edition and Softimage XSI Experience are watered down (or in many cases, crippled) versions of the full packages. Also, be aware that the most expensive program is not necessarily the best program, especially if it cannot do the job that you specifically bought it for. On the image gallery, Wings 3D, Strata, Infini-D (not for PC, but is a precursor to Carrara), Cinema 4D, Strata 3D, and Lightwave are the most popular programs. Lightwave is the program that ATMOS used to make EV Nova, and is my personal favorite program both as a modeler and as a still renderer. What is a renderer, you ask? After you finish making your 3D model, the only way you can output it as an image is through a process called rendering. A good renderer can with the right ingredients make photorealistic images.. Wings 3D, while gaining popularity, does not come bundled with a renderer and requires another program (POV-Ray and Strata are two preferred renderers) to render final images.

As I forgot to mention before, if you're a student, these programs can be significantly less expensive.
