i'm just wondering, and don't get mad at me, but has anyone(windowwss users) ever thought to get on the internet, and go searching for editors? i mean, there has to be something. rez edit was not designed for EVNova specifcly. sure theres Nova Tools, but all your doing with that is makeing it compatable and understandable to editing Nova files. i am sure there must be something out there. heck, when i used to play Ghost Recon(demo), i was able to hack the files useing SimpleText(you can do it with TextEdit too, but its more complicated).

What does rez mean? maybe you can search the net for Window " "(what ever Rez stands for).

You are worng. The .rez file format was created by contraband for EV : Nova PC and ONLY for EV : Nova PC , they created a custom file type. No editors exist for it and even if it did you are again pushing towards a rift.

How many time do I have to say it , can't you see that a .rez editor IS A BAD IDEA.

Novatools was made for Nova, res edit was not.
there is a res edit site where you can get loads of things for Macs that involve the use of res edit. like diffrent docks, diffrent log in screens for osX, diffrent dock poofs, diffrent iTunes skins. Lots of stuff, and not one thing on the site has to do with Escape Velocity 1,2, and 3.

The 'rsrc' format is platform-wide standard file-format used on the Macintosh. Having a single file format has it's strengths and weaknesses. One of the strengths is that you only need one editor to edit any file on the system, one of the downsides is that nobody knows how to deal with anything else.

true. there are quite a few things res edit can't do. however its a very short list.

Edit: i for got to say this on the link to resexcellence, BUT, if you are a Mac user, are a bit bord with your same, every day mac look, then this is the site for you. but wait you have to make sure you know lots about res edit, and i don't mean Nova Tools.

Sorry, from my point of view, as a PC user who has no access to a Mac, a .rez editor is a heck of a lot better than what I have now, which is NOTHING. And don't claim Basilisk II is the solution, if I wanted to run MacOS 7.5 (8.0 won't run properly unless basilisk is running under Win2k or WinXP, and any MacOS previous to OSX is worth less than the electrons required to store it.), I'd spend a few hundred for an ancient Mac.

The point is that Windows has no such platform standard. Developers use whatever works best for them. One of the upsides of that is that they can adapt as needs and the computer's capabilities change so that the assets for many modern games are held in simple text files and uncompressed archives can be are modified individually and in bulk with ease, the downside is that when they don't do that you basically need a different editor for every application. In other words, I doubt there's anything already available that can handle the .rez format.

Well, a hex-editer would work, I suppose, but that's not what people want.

Heck, if you just want to edit binary files, go to a DOS window, and type 'edit /70'. This opens DOS Edit in binary mode, 70 columns wide. You could open/change the .rez files that way, I've done it with the Windows executable 'explorer.exe', so my 'Start' button said 'Stop' for awhile.

What people want is a nice GUI editor, like Nova Tools or Mission Commander.

Accessing the data files isn't the problem, making them comprehendable to humans IS.

Another idea that nobody's mentioned is make a Java application or applet that can convert between .bin and .rez files both ways. That way, only one program is needed and it can run on both Macs and PCs.

Its a good idea but we need skilled people , I have already posted at the Just Tech boards asking if there are Mac developers who are willing to write a .rez--> Mac plug-in format convertor. Fingers crossed

I know a good deal of Java myself, but I'm really a much better C++ programmer. Again, the only problem is that we don't have all the specs on the .bin and .rez formats yet.
