    • EVula - Upload help

EVula - I have finished the first version of my TC to allow play of EV Classic or Override, as well as Nova, in the Nova engine.

The problem is trying to upload it so you can look at it.

To permit all three games in one, I had to add ncb's to control the appearance of all the Nova resources, as well as adding in the resources for Classic and Override. The result is that all six Nova Data files are modified and there is a Nova Data 7, all seven Nova Ships files are modified, all three Nova Graphics files are modified, and all four Nova Titles files are modified. In addition there are two Quicktime movies for the intros to Classic and Override, and the Readme file. The resultant .sit.hqx file is 90.7 MB!

I tried uploading it, and the upload appeared to start, judging from the 'send' bar in the Remote Access CP, but after a couple of minutes transmission stopped, and I then got a message that Remote Access was 'unable to access url: ambrosia etc.'

It would probably be easier to upload the files one at a time, particularly since I only have a 56K dialup modem. However, to do it that way we would have to coordinate in advance so that you can identify the files to be combined.

Can you think of any easier way to do this?

      ------------------

    • Why remake data files, when you could just use a plug that modifed what you needed and left the data you didn't replace well enough alone.
And why all three in one when you could make 2 TCs, one for EV and one for EVO? I didn't even think nova had enough resources for all three together anyway.

    • To combine all three games in one package, practically ALL the original resources had to be reconditioned. In these files EV is conditioned !b2100, Override is conditioned b2100 & !b2400, and Nova is conditioned b2400. The chärs used to start the pilots set the appropriate conditioning bits.

Since so many resources were modified, it is much easier and cheaper to use replacement files. To use plugins, I would have to have multiple plugins due to the ResEdit restrictions on resource files. Therefore the upload of plugins would be almost as large as an upload of modified original files. In addition, when trying to start the game, having to load all the original resources and then replace most of them with modified resources would require more startup time and put a greater strain on RAM. This TC loads using the same RAM allocation for Nova that I was using for the original game.

There are plenty of resources available for everything except missions. My solution to this is discussed in the Readme file which would have accompanied the upload if I could have uploaded it. There are, in fact enough resources available that I am preparing a second upload of my own and some other plugins already available for the original Nova, which I have adjusted to fit into the resource scheme of the TC. I planned to accompany this second upload with a resource map of all resource numbers used in the TC, as well as ncb's used. This is taking a while because I can no longer use Dr. Ralph's MISH or the Mission Bitmap utility from the Addons page. They both have nervous breakdowns because ot the multiple occurences of the conditioning bits.

Finally, I put all three together, just as I previously merged EV and Override for my own use, because I don't like having to quit and restart to change games. This way I can play one game for a while, and change to another just by switching pilots. I created this TC because I want to use it, and I decided to put it up on the web so others could use it if they wanted to. Besides, there are a few problems in appearance that I cannot resolve, and it would be a lot easier for others to discuss them with me if those others had the files to examine and didn't have to rely on second-hand descriptions.

    • That sounds like an interesting idea as a time-saver. However, 90 megs is a tall package for even people with broadband like me. I'd be a bit hesitant to make that sort of download unless I knew it was really good. I'm not really sure how you should do this, since you seem to be editing pretty much everything already in Nova to make them show up when they should. Plus adding EVO and EV would just add to the megs. Sounds like you're stuck with the whole 90.7 megs to me.
