    • StarTrek plug-in help needed

      Hello everybody,
I help out in the upcoming StarTrek plug-in. We have pretty much everybody we need, except an expert for unix or/and sendmail. This is really important, because we are just not good enough in this on our own. Solving our problems means that we can begin the development, so if you have strong abilities in that, please drop bjs3@mac.com a line. This is the email address of Ben Smith, our project director.

      Please help out!

      Steve

Im pretty flexible at a mac, but, i dunno what a unix or a sendmail is. I'll do whatever is at my reach to help you or to get a guy to help you.

    • UNIX is a **** -OS; that is, a whole range of different OSes that look and behave similarly. Mac OS X is based to some extent on BSD, a particular flavour of UNIX. sendmail is a UNIX command-line email client... what exactly is it you guys need? I can use the CLI well enough, but sendmail is not my forte.

      Is that censored word 'mëta'?

      Why would mëta be censored?

    • I think that Gul Banana thinks that Unix is a "bad" OS. If so, he hasn't used it before, at least not to its full capabilities. On the surface, it's pretty primative. There is no graphical interface, no mouse, etc. Below that, it is the most stable, and one of the oldest operating systems around. It's used for business networking, and was created by some guy to play a networked game. (I have a book with more specific details, but I don't feel like looking for it right now). Anyway, it's been modified by several different companies over the years, but that still doesn't refute the fact that it's the oldest operating system that's still in widespread use today. Unix was the replacement for the company mainframes, and is also one of the most stable operating systems out there. You know how Apple says that OS X is so great and stable? It's because it's based of the Unix OS. You know how many viruses have been written for Unix in the last several years? Probably no more than zero.

So the statement that Unix is a ****-OS, is positively untrue and was probably based on incomplete facts.

    • Heh, I love UNIX, and Mac OS X is simply the best OS there is - I said "mëta" (without the umlaut), and I have no idea why that word was censored. Kudos to David for making a little more sense out of a blank, incomprehensible row of characters.

No. UNIX stems from an older operating system called Multics. Multics was a project began by the Defense Dept. to create a stable OS. Multics, however, became too complicated to use, so a bunch of the programmers broke off and made their own, simpler OS, based on Multics--hence the name UNIX.

I'm still trying to figure out why they need a UNIX hacker to make a Nova plug-in.

      You see a Grue.

    • For the website I believe.. they are planning on using a web-driven development style commonly seen on open source sites like sourceforge

    • You know, it's probably not a good idea to apply UNIX file-copy/movement tools, which do not recognise resource forks, to a project composed almost entirely of files containing nothing but resource forks. At the very least, remember to binhex or tarball everything 🙂
