    • Hire escorts (bar) advice

I'm looking for help with getting ships to show up when clicking the hire escorts button in the bar.

What appears to be happening is that any ships that only become available after a certain mission bit is set are not appearing on the list of available escorts (and yes, this is after their associated mission bit has been set and they are available for purchase from the shipyard). The ships in question also use special tech levels (which I did verify as valid for the location where I'm trying to hire them). How do I make them show up for hire? Or can't I? I went through the EVO Bible and the FAQs here and didn't see any reference to this.

Ships which have special tech levels but no availability bit (-1) appear in the bar as available for hire normally. This is a plug for Override.

    • I don't think it's documented, but in the current versions of both Escape Velocity and EV Override, it seems that ships that are only available after a mission bit is set are never available as escorts. As far as I know, there's no way to change this behaviour.

    • As far as I know as well, ships with a MisBit set to anything but -1 will never be hireable. I'm unsure if this behvior is in Nova or not, though.

      Oh well. Thanks, though!

    • I'm not sure if its a lost cause or not. In many plugs, they change the Rebel Missions around a bit so that after you kill the Alien Threat, you can buy Rebel vessels and also hire ones from certain bars. I'm not exactly sure how they do it, but they do.

    • Hmm, I remember being able to hire Rebel escorts from Palshife in the game without plugs so I don't know where you are getting this stuff.
Holy ****, David Arthur was wrong!

      Perish the thought.

The way to make a mission bit ship available for hire is to make it available only on certain Spobs. Then make the Spobs appear only after a certain mission bit is set.

That way, the ship itself still has it bit set to -1 so that it will be available as an escort in the bar.

It's a clunky workaround, but it gets the job done.

Yeah... that is about the only way I have encountered for this. However, both spl and David Arthur are right :D. In EV 1.0.5 and EV Override 1.0.0+, mission-bit escorts are not available. However, in EV 1.0.4 and below, they were. I do not know why this was changed.

You sure? I've only used 1.0.5 and after the Rebel Alien missions I was given the ability to hire Rebel escorts on Palshife. The text said something like "Rebel High Command will be glad to give you this escort in exchange for a large 'donation' to the rebel treasury."
Maybe it was just a bug in my particular copy.

    • That would do. My only worry there is that I'm already at 52 ships and counting. With only 64 available it'll be pushing it to squeeze any escorts in.

I suppose the other option would be to make the ships so that they aren't tied to any mission bit by default, but do have a unique tech level, and then tie a syst/spob that offers that tech level tied to a visbit the would have been the ship's availability bit. Save on my ship resources that way.

      Isn't that what I said?

Of course, I said it in my own less-than-clear manner.

      Heh heh.

Yep. Exactly what you said. Just not what I read. 😉
