Jude, have you seen the price drop of AMD processors? Several online listings advertise AMD Athlons at 350-500 MHz for $42-$60.

Thank you all so much!
The overall verdict would be: WAIT! Waiting's good. I'll do that. (in fact, I don't have all the money yet, I'll have it more towards the end of summer.)
Soviet Mikee, your answers, after hours of meditation, made more sense. Seriously, I don't practice yoga or anything. My job, this summer, is phone interviewing for a polling company. I learned a new poll today, on computers and CPUs. It helped!
If there is any building or setting up to be done (which I would prefer not to have to do), I'd have to refer to some friends for advice.
In the mean time, thanks again. I'll see after that big show in NYC.

Nooo! PC propaganda!
Processor speeds are not the only measure of a computers speed, infact, according to BYTEmark tests, the 350MHz G3 chip in the Rev. D iMac outperforms a Pentium 700Mhz chip. They tested it with photoshop filters and stuff like that, sooooo, mac are fa supirior..
However, they are much harder to upgrade, whereas in a PC, you just have to unscrew that oh-so-ugly case and poke about a bit. in a mac, you have to find the right cards that are compatible with the rest of the machine, find out HOW to open the case etc etc.
My opinion: Apple Mac, in about ten years I believe that Apple will be as big as microsoft (though not as evil). The first step has already begun with the Microsoft court case, the next will be when I've created my Server destroying virus which I'll send to the Microsoft support line. It will spread like an unwanted vagabond through the Microsoft campus, wreaking havoc here and their! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!
Whoa, sorry about that.

I didn't mean to do that.

In Blue&White; G3s, as well as all G4s, it is simplicity itself to install a PCI card, Ram, etc.

PCs are only popular for games and business. Current pro Macs give you better graphics than the PC side can offer (128 bit instead of a measly 64 bit), and most software programming is done on Macs. Macs tend to also be the most popular for musicians, writers, artists, and the rest of the creative market. Macs are also a better investment in the long run.

---Lie! In fact, I have seen tests done by INDEPENDENT companies, they find that the 500 MHz G4 is about as fast as a 650 MHz PC running Photoshop. Now remember, Photoshop is a MAC OPTIMIZED application. Try something like data processing or games. Ever use a mac in a UT lan party? Slows EVERYTHING down.

I haven't comited a federal offence, becase I live in England! Anyway, what's so illegal about making a joke? You yanks are more serious than I thought, sound slike you need to mellow out a bit.
I do accept that I am wrong about my last post though, my information was based on an article in a Computer Warehouse catalouge. I stll despise PC's though :).

Hmm...I'm guessing those weren't altivec-enabled tasks? Also, if Photoshop's memory partition isn't jacked up on a mac, its performance is awful. Some "experts" trying to bet benchmarks install photoshop out of the box and start testing. They're probably forgetting to up the mac's memory partition (which doesn't have to be done in windows, or OSX). That would make quite a bit of difference. Do these companies actually sell mac products? Or are they "independant" because they aren't Microsoft, Intel, or AMD? Let's face it, everyone's trying to use smoke and mirrors. Still, a lot of the independant tests I've read point to a virtual tie between 1Ghz Athalon and 500Mhz G4 in photoshop.
BTW, there is no way you'll ever get an Athalon in a notebook w/a long battery life. The AMD has a higher clock speed due to its intense power consumption and then sheer number of transistors (believe that's the right part) crammed on the chip. The G4 is stated as more "elegant" by independant specialists. If Motorola/IBM ever made a Gx chip w/that much power consumption, heat give-off, etc, then things would get interesting
BTW, most professional graphics producers/Web-designers/computer professionals use macs. If you're someone who doesn't care about eae of use, and wants to "save" $$, buy a Wintel computer. If you want to USE that computer, buy a mac.
In conclusion to Wintel boxes.

Call me a yank again and I'll 'plant you like a tree'. Yanks are those tyrannt bastards that came in and burned my countries farms and destroyed our cities, robbing us of self-rule.
Anyways, you can commit a crime on the internet that is illegal in another country. You think you can call a Canadian and give him a death threat because you live in another country? They'll put you on trial! Same thing if you tried to fraud/con someone out of their money, you still be put on trial for it.

---Can we say 'independent Mac zealots with their head up Steve Jobs' ass'? Mac users and PC users ADMIT Photoshop is optimized for Mac OS-altivec. That is about as fair as running a QT test comparing Mac OS vs Windows... obviously QT on Mac OS will win. Try running independent tests using things like games and data processing. After all, does everyone use Photoshop? BWAHAHAHA!

---How much aluminum is used for the G4 heatsink? 500 MHz = 1 GHz... BS! How about the other Apple lies like 'The G4 can do gigaflops'? It turns out only the 500 MHz G4s (you know, the ones Apple lied about when they'd release them and the whole cost thing?) can do a gigaflop.

----Who gives a **** what "professional graphics producers/Web-designers/computer professionals" use? I use something because I like it. What about Linux? How many people use Linux that are programmers... damn near everyone! That doesn't mean everyone who is a programmer uses Linux now does it? I know LOTS of people who are into graphics or Web-designing that HATE Macs.
