Dpes anyone know of any good tactics using fleets of your own?

Aye. Get lots of fighters, and escorts with fighters.

Go to a system, release all your fighters. Attack a ship so your escorts will release their fighters. Then demand tribute.

The system will be full of ships, and the planet will only send 1 or 2 ships out instead of the usual defense fleet.

If you are about to demand tribute, have your fleet 'hold position' a couple of screens' width away from a planet. Park yourself on the far side of the fleet from the planet. When the defence fleet launch and come after you, wake up your fleet (order them to return to formation) only when the enemy are already chasing after you. Your escorts then get a clear, sustained shot at the defenders from behind. The defenders will go after you, not your escort, so you never run out of escorts in a long battle.

Something like that, anyway. Long time since I played at planetary domaination.
