I'm fairly far into the game, and I have made it to the gate where I presume the Tome of Elixirs is stored (3rd level of cave near High Garendall), but it says I lack the key to gain entrance. Does this mean I need another key than the one recovered from the third level of the Learning Tree? And if so, where do I get this? I assumed that the key that let me into the general area of High Garendall was the only key in the game.

Your off course. this is the last place you want to be. When you get out of the crypt, head east, then north, the high garendall ruins are up there and the cave with the Tome is on the east and west side of the ruins.

Hmmm.... well, I thank you for that, but now my curiousity is worse; what is behind the locked gate in the cave just north and east of the crypt entrance? I busted my behind to get down there, so you can imagine I'm a little anxious to see what's down there; can you give me a hint? Thanks.

I too got to the bottom of that dungeon thinking it was the obvious place for a Tome.
The tourism industry should put up a sign "Tome of Elixirs Not Here". On the other hand, my character moved up a level for trying.
I guess the place for a tome is where the mages are hanging out instead. The blue standard over there was a decoy!

I was trying to get this shield u are talkng aaout and all i got was two dragon's teeth. How do i finsish the rest? And another how do i get into the 1st dungeon in upper garendal?

After the second dragoon tooth, the Ritual shield quest should be next. Keep takeing missions from the elf.
Need more info to know what cave your talking about for 'upper garendal'.

There are two other exits from the cave you went into. One leads up to the witch finger tunnel. The other is in the next screen to the west in the cave. It leads up to the witch kalixa's place. Talk to her.

So I am trying to find the Tome and my only guess is the building way far north gaurded by the dark spirits(?). But I can't open it. So how do I get in. The tome is my only quest so I am at a loss. I assume it is the key on the third level of the tree but how do I get into the third level with no quest?

You show the shield you got from the witch to the druid, make take a few trys due to a bug to some people have, The drid will send you on a quest for a ring, then with that ring you get 3ed level of the learning tree.
