Because naturally, anyone with a sense of patriotism will be happy to join a cause that's fighting for freedom and liberty. Of course, Rak or David will come in here and tell you how wonderful and kind the luxurious aristocrats of the Confederation are, but they're just too busy feeding on their own propoganda.

Rebels are more popular by a large majority. The intro text of EV back in '96 is what got my blood boiling against the 'Feds.

Why is it fun to fly? I tried pirating with a Shuttlecraft that had been upgraded with Armaplast and three Laser Cannons in Sol. The result was horrible. The Patrol Ships three Missiles ripped me down to armor, and its shields regenerated so fast I gave up firing Lasers against Protons and exploded. Should I try it again at a less patrolled system (edges of Confed worlds), with speed upgrades and 999 Javelins as Zax suggested?
