    • Alien Missions... Need help

      Hi Everyone,

I need some help please... the confeds have me searching around Trugati Asteroid Belt for the Aliens or the Alien Cruiser... my mission is to destroy the aliens and return to Mars... I have been warping around the universe for months looking for them. Anybody know where to find them and a good strategy for defeating them?

Not to blow my own horn (if I dont who will?)... but I have only had this game for 29 days:

      Kestrel - Tiamat NRG
Four laser cannons, two proton cannons, three proton turrets, 2 Lightnings, two missle racks, two javelin pods, Accel+Top Speed Enhancement, RCS Upgrade, Missle jammer, IFF Decoder, Density Scanner, Flare Launcher, Particle Beam, Afterburner, Ramscoop. all the good stuff...

Also, I have dominated ALL the Independent Systems. I am going to dominate everything by the end of this weekend. I think I'll start with some rebel systems, a few confed. systems and all the pirate systems. Just think, I am still running EV under the 30 day demo period.

    • A corvette loaded with laser cannons and a tractor beam. It's the ultimate alien-killer mix.

You can find the aliens in the Tryvin system.

    • Yes, if you feel it in the force, Luke. Oh jeez, sorry. Anyway, I'm sure Skyblade here could do what you've done in a matter of a few days. I'm sure he has, too. But he would never take over Rebel planets. Jerk. πŸ˜› Oh yeah, register EV ASAP.

You're right he probably could and probably has. My point is that before last month I had never even heard of this game. I owe all my success in the game to this web board and the people who gave me good advice.

Of course thet're tough! The tractor beam can be earned through rebel missions after completing the rebel alien mission string. Try flying in circles behind the cruiser using mostly primary fire, I have never beaten it with secondaries but a particle beam might work. Oh, don't bother with the alien fighters just the alien battlecruiser.

I can do it in less than a day, thank you very much, and have. Thirty minutes got me half way through one string and in a ship to last all the way.

Tiamat, one very important note about fighting the Aliens.

Stay away from their fighters! They can be destroyed - just - but it's a long, complicated process and usually needs a tractor beam (it can be done without, I did it in a Rebel Destroyer with speed set on 50% once). You only need to destroy the cruiser. Circle around it to avoid it's heavy fusion beam, and let your escorts (mission related or otherwise) play with the fighters.

Another thing, which I only vaguely remember. If the first thing that comes up on your targetter isn't the Alien Cruiser, you might as well load it up again and go to Tryvin once more. If the alien cruiser is the first ship that you select, I seem to remember that the fighters always go after your escorts. If the fighters are already out, they'll go after you, and it's a bit harder when you're dodging three alien fighters while circling the battlecruiser.

    • CosmicFungus' Patented Alien Killing MethodΒ™:

Firstly, a note. I did this without the tractor beam. I just never figured out how to get it.

A specialised ship is required: start with a corvette. Take off the heavy rockets and missles. Load on as many laser turrets and laser cannons as possible (lasers and protons are equaly effective against aliens, as they have no armour), and then get two javelin pods and max out on rockets. Next, get all the engine, thrust, and maneuverability upgrades. Trust me, even in a 'vette, you'll need them. Next, sensors must me upgraded. An IFF decoder and gravimetric sensors will give you that all important edge in the coming battle. A little extra protection is needed next - as many shield batteries as will fot on, and a shield enhancer (sp?), available from Blackthorne. A few layers of armour wouldn't go amiss as well. Finally, use up any free space you may have left with torpedo tubes and ammo, although you should never compromise anything else for these.

      Escorts will not be required

As you enter thesystem, the alien cruiser should be the first thing you target. Unload your torpedoes at in now. Forget about the fighters, the sole purpose of your rebel (or confed) cruiser escorts is to distract them from your ship. Close quickly with the alien cruiser, and circle around it to its rear. As you can outrun its seeker drones, the AI will not launch them! Also, its Heavy Fusion Beam is forward only, so as long as you remain to the rear of the cruiser, you should be out of harm's way. Simply circle around and pound it with lasers and javelins, and in no time the alien scum will be dead in space. Easy, huh?

    • I've completed the entire Rebel mission string including the alien missions twice in one day, thank you very much. ;)Β™

The key to success is a fast ship - I'm more of a strategic player in just about everything I do, and therefore depend more on speed and tactics than just bulk and extreme firepower. The corvette is certainly the best ship against the aliens. Unlike SD recommended, I always go for the fighters first. Separate them from the mothership, then destroy them one by one. If you continue pounding them lasers at high speed and at a correct angle, the fighters are often unable to fire their fusion beams. As far as the mothership, she's far easier than her children. If you can kill the fighters, you should be able to handle the rest.

    • I agree, a Corvette with lasers is a deadly combination. But when you get a Rebel Destroyer or Confederate Frigate after the missions you can be even deadlier! Bwa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!

D@mn! I've done it in two days once, but I didn't even try the fighters. I like speed and all that with as much primaries as possible, I usually never use secondaries unless I'm rich and want some fun.

    • I've beaten the aliens countless times and everytime the same way, and its without a tractor beam. I've never tried the tractor beam... Anyways, this is what I do. I find a ship that is decently large, and that you could get to faster speeds with upgrades. I've beaten the alien mission this way with a courier, and I'm not joking. It just has to be a ship that can get some large available space. Once you get it strip out the inside to get the most amount of space possible. Then throw on some bomb racks, and fill that ship full of bombs. Ok, so this way will require some fancy flying, but it works. And space bombs are undisputedly deadly to all ships. πŸ™‚

Actually, the Rebel destroyer is undeniably better, and not too hard to get (I captured one in a shuttlecraft, and then captured a Rebel cruiser, all in the space of an hour.)

(quote) Unlike SD recommended, I always go for the fighters first. (/quote)

Well, for Christ's sake, if you want a good challenge, go for it. I'm just saying, the fighters aren't important. Any fool can avoid their fire while hitting the cruiser in case they aren't occupied by your escort cruiser(s) (or flying off the screen like they sometimes do), and the alien fighters are tough, time wasting cookies. And the mission doesn't say you need to kill 'em.

But if you want some fun, do it. Just don't boast about it. <grin>

<nods> That sounds somewhat similar to how I battered one in Turin with my destroyer, after passing up on the opportunity to destroy the fighter in the main mission. Somewhat similar. I used low speed to give me plenty of time to shift around, making sure it didn't escape my grasps. I'd swear that bugger was either trying to Monty Python me, or run off the edge of the map. <grin> It died, anyway.

      From alexander:

Are you looking for the main Cruiser? Well I found the alien cruiser in the Farazon system (I am not saying that it will be there for you) and this is waht i did. I kept going to the system and see if there were any Rebel or Confederate cruisers or even destroyers and frigates. Its useful because the alien cruiser goes only after you. All you have to do is evade and let the frigates and cruisers go for the alien cruiser. If you have tons of weapons and stuff, try to help destroy the alien cruiser. If you destroy the alien cruiser, then that will destroy all the alien fighters. Good Luck.

    • If you want to take out the alien fighters, you can 1.Somehow get on top of one and shoot it while you avoid getting knocked off by the fusion beam or 2.Circle it to confuse the fighter and hit it with your turrets.

(This message has been edited by potatobreath (edited 08-18-2002).)

    • I easily beat it three times with a kestrel. Just get all the good stuff for it (armor, shield boosters, turning, speed, and eacelleration upgrades), then fill up the rest of the space with missiles, and play ring-aroung-the-rosie while unloading your racks and firing away with your primaries. I never really found the fighters to be a problem, they always seem to go after the fed cruisers and such that warp in with u.

Actually, this behavior I think is due to the fact that your escorts will always go after your enemies in the order in which they appear on your targeter...so the Alien fighters are just defending themselves from your escorts, something you want to have happen, as you said.
