    • New EV Player Here!

Hello everybody... looks like EV has a strong following despite the fact that its six years old now! I really enjoy playing EV so far and am interested in developing entertainment games. I have been playing for almost a week and here is my data...

      Ship name: Tiamat 9
      Type: Argosy
Upgrades: 4 mass expansions, All 3 engine tweaks, missle rack, 11 missles, flare launcher, 30 flares, ramscoop, sheild regenerator, missle jammer, afterburner, 4 sheild capacitors, autorefueller, durasteel (level2 armor plate) 2 fuel tanks, three proton cannons and two laser turrets.
      Combat Rating: noteworthy
      Credits: 2.5 mil

My questions are, what type of ship do you think I should purchase next? I am thinking about a corvette but I am afraid it wouldn't carry enough stuff. I like the Kestrel but I think it might be too slow.

Also, what plugin should I get first?

Finally, What are some good ways to make money? I am sick of running errands and I am atarting to really prefer getting my jobs at the spaceport bar or raiding pirates for credits.

      Thanks everyone and happy gaming!

    • 🙂 i would like to be the first one to welcome you to the boards. Welcome to the Boards.

question1: depends on your preference. if you wants speed and reasonable firepower, get the Vette. if you want a great way to make money fast and easy, but still want great firepower and speed then you want the Kestrel and the engine tweaks

question2: my first plug was......well i cant remember but i liked it. i think you should first get Lightning Jump. its great for getting across the galaxy in a few moments. i never play without it unless im in a contest.

question3: a great way to make money fast is to get a Kestrel. sell your Lightning fighters, and capture some pirate ones. sell those, capture some more and sell those. repete until you have all the money you want.

glad to be of service. 🙂

Kestrel. When upgraded, it can go very fast. It also totally outclasses the corvette in terms of firepower, weapons space, and cargo space.

Trading. Hire (or capture) a freighter fleet, and then ship luxury goods from (I believe this is it, though it may be backwards) Procyon to Pollux. Then some other good from Pollux to Procyon. Repeat until you've made enough money.

    • Welcome aboard. Glad to have you.

#1 - Go for the corvette. My all-time favorite besides the Rebel destroyer. Give it some upgrades and you'll be able to outrun hostile missiles and attack like a fighter.

#2 - I really liked "Galactic Scourge" and "Pale." They're really good if you've completed the standard EV missions and you want to build on to the game. Great plugs.

#3 - Errands, bah! Rob the pirates; there's all too many of 'em in the galaxy. I like to hang around Pirate's Cove, where pirate kestrels and corvettes are a common sight. Disable them and steal the money they've stollen. 😉

      All the best.

    • I like raiding in the pirate system two jumps above Spica (I'm not sure if that's Pirates cove or not). There's an uninhabited planet next to the Pirates base, so you don't have to bribe your way in to recharge your sheilds.

Hand me the gun and say that again.

    • Shipwise, go for the Kestrel. If there's something you don't like about it, you have enough room to fix it. If you want to you can make it's speed and maneauverability comparable to that of a lightning. For first plug-ins I recommend Lightning Jump and Arena. In order to make money in your Argosy (a ship most people don't like but one which I have a special soft spot for) I recommend deciding which government you want to support and you should find strings of closeby missions and do them in chains (I never liked that part either, but it's necessary). During the mission chains if you find yourself in the opposing government's space, you should go ahead and plunder a few ships, ideally your fellow traders (wicked laugh). Also, and very importantly, make room to upgrade the laser turrets to proton turrets. They're well worth the space difference.

    • Welcome to the boards, Tiamat! D@mn, you're doing good for a week! I barely understood how to play after a week.

Question 1- Get a Kestrel, you can get more upgrades and more guns and turrets.

Question 2- I really like Galactic Scourge, it's very professional and has some good jokes.

Question 3- Get you're combat rating up some(can't remember how high), and go to the southeastern pirate system and enter the bar. A guy should come in and need help with a shipment. Help him and you'll be recruited to a shipping company (d@mn that's three things I can't remember!). You get paid a lot more (80,000-120,000cr) disable all pirates you see and take their money and sell their ammo. Kestrels have 2lightnings as ammo and they sell for 2mil. Go to the spaceport bars to try to get stellar defense missions or hunt pirate missions. You could go to Lethe and Aries and accept their missions to defend from each other. I think I've said enough. Again, welcome to the boards!

    • Hrm. I would probably get the Kestrel on my first time around, and use your existing money to upgrade your Argosy.
Here's how I would convert it, but many people have different tastes, and if you don't like it, don't use it.

      1:Argosy (duh :p)
5: Mass Expansions (I think that's the limit)
2: Proton Turrets (same rate of fire as a laser turret, because they're 3 cannons on the turret instead of two, but far more power)
3: Laser Cannons (damage per second, laser cannons do more than protons, because they have a better fire rate)
1: Durasteel (adds 25 units of armour on the shipyard scale, far better than sheild capacitors, which only add 1.5 units of shieilds on the shipyard scale, and a sheild recharger is only worthwile on fighters, look in res-edit to find out why)
2:missile racks (I always have these)
      20: Missiles (great anti-fighter weapons)
2: Javelin Rocket Launchers (arguably the best secondary weapon in the game)
Infinite amount: Javelin Rockets (they're weightless)
1: Ramscoop (when you run out of fuel, this is a lifesaver)
Every single weightless upgrade you can buy for your ship (Engine tweaks, IFF Decoder, Auto Refueler e.c.t)

      ------------------
Hand me the gun and say that again.

    • Kestrel, blast. A great ship, but way overpriced. It's not even as powerful as the Rebel destroyer (not including the lightnings), and when you do include the lightnings, a kestrel should only cost about 4 or possibly 5 million credits. And in short, I generally think the Rebel destroyer is a better ship: for about a fourth the price of a kestrel.

Yeah the destroyer is one of the best warships in the game, and cheaper too. I also like how many turrets and cannons it can hold, and it has plenty space for upgrades.

Hey Skyblade, what's Pale about? I've been wanting to get a new plug but I didn't want to spend all that time downloading and then I didn't like it.

I'm not Skyblade but I think I can answer your question. I beta-tested Pale a few years back when Soul, the author, was about to release it. I guess more than anything, it's about buglessness. You will be hard-pressed to find a single error in it. The entire game is cleanly programmed, balanced, and a hell of alot of fun to play. Throw in an interesting combination of new ships, powerful new governments, and an awesome storyline and you've got one of the best plugins EV has ever seen. Check out the Devotion topic and you'll see I gave Soul a nomination in an extremely coveted list simply for his work on it

Here's the synopsis straight from the Pale homepage: The Civil War continues as a reluctant new political player is thrust into intergalactic politics. An independent world determined to maintain its identity engages in astro-physical research of areas beyond the Fringe. The Lethe-Cydonian War hurtles toward its conclusion. And Hunter, having reasserted its clannish consciousness following the devastation of its homeworld, Orion, in the Great War, quietly re-industrializes, but at what cost to the colonized worlds and humanity?

Quite simply, I find the destroyer to be the most versatile vessel in the game (as you have pointed out). It can range from being a brutal gunship (cannon / turret combination) to a swift light carrier. It's all in your taste.

As for your last question, I think AJ's post should suffice. Certainly one of the best plugins for EV ever created, and some awesome graphics (always something I look for in plugins). I very much recommend it.

It's a great plug, but it's biased towards the Confederation though (Rebel Destroyer is slower, Mass Driver is commercially avaidable, gives Confed Gunboat a better primary armament e.c.t, although I still love it, It's definately one of the best, if not the best, except for Frozen Heart, there's a distinct lack of gameplay and ship choice in that plug, but the superb storyline, graphics and realism more than makes up for that). Anyways, I would definately download Pale, it's only 3 or so megabytes as well, I think. And the laser quad is really useful on a courier.

    • Clavius & Beyond. A good fun plug with some tough battles. Plus the terror of the Plasma Ball. It also includes the Arena fight simulator which lets you duke it out with a variety of enemies.

    • I'm not too sure but doesn't the rebel destroyer have to be cheap to fit the story/plot. The rebels are not a rich government, so the shipyard sells it for a cheap price to their people.

    • Hi again, and thanks to all for your great comments. I have gone ahead and upgraded to the Corvette for now, with the engine tweaks I am able to outrun everyone! I also got the afterburner and ramscoop too, they are both lifesavers. I can actually outfly my opponents missles and lasers its a lot of fun. I m having trouble adjusting to the heavy rockets but they do pack a wallop! The javelins are great because of rate of fire and they dont weigh anything.

Soon I want to get into a Destroyer or a Kestrel, but thats several hours away.

I was curious about the 'Monty Python' technique... is that a cheapshot hit and run move with heavy rockets? and what about Space Bombs?

Not exactly. It's when you remain out of an enemy's primary weapon range and match their speed (while your ship drifts backwards), and blast them without receiving any damage to your own ship. It's really both a cheat and taking advantage of EV's AI.

why is that cheating? it's simply taking advantage of firepower. with a forklift, which is also cheating, its sorta bad, but...how easy can it be to match and maintain veocity while going backward

Try decoy flares, I just used some of those a while ago. They're great fun to drop and watch a missile blow into 'em. Good substitute of an asteroid. The Monty Python is a lifesaver when you're in a small spaceship. As for me, I like to get a vette rebel destroyer and get the engine tweaks all the proton cannons/turrets and shield and armor and missiles or torps. but thats me, others like lots of secondaries. My friend likes to use bombs, he has a ship follow him then drops a bomb and watches the fireworks.
