      The mass driver is a huge weapon that fires little metal slugs. It barely does anything to shields, but it shreds aromor quite nicely. But there's a few problems:
      a) It's expensive,
      🆒 it weighs forty tons, and
      c) you can only get it after completing the rebel alien string.

      You get it by completing the Rebel Alien missions. Get a high combat rating (deadly or so), and you have to have a high legal status in a Rebel system, and then look for an "ivestigate disappearances" mission. That will lead to a "destroy alien" mission, and then you will be given access to Rebel ship and weapons.

      I only use mass drivers when using the Galactic Scourge plugin. They make an excellent equal to the Confederation neutron blaster...

      Bah! It's a useless weapon. It's effectiveness vs. it's space make it even worse than the Neutron Blaster. You're much better off saving the space for better weapons, such as laser cannons and jevelin launchers.

      I was wondering, is it true that cannons have a longer range then turrets? It sure seems that way with proton weapons at least...

      Oh, and is there a Mass Driver turret, or is that something I saw in a dream/plug-in?

      I have found the mass driver most effective on confed frigtaes/cruisers, sheilds down.

      There isn't one in the stock game, but EV Expansion Set does have a swivel mass turret.

      Bah! Fool! Everyone knows that proton superiority is a myth. Laser cannons are much better weapons for their space, as they fire faster, and do very well at taking down shields. Turrets are a different story, but when it comes to forward firing cannons, go with the laser cannon.

      Several other plugs, including Galactic Scourge, will also give you Mass Driver turrets, but they're really worthless.

      If I remember correctly though, I think EVGE greatly improves the mass driver by giving it a much higher repeat rate (making it practical for the Orion interceptor to use) and a lower damage rating to compensate. I think it weighs less too.

      I would have to agree that the mass driver in regular EV is quite useless though. Same goes for the neutron blaster. These weapons are much to large without sufficient benefits like range to make up for that.

      As far as the cannon-turret thing, I doubt that the shots have an inherently shorter range. I'm thinking the reason is that the turrets often fire from the center of your ship (and at funny angles sometimes), and the cannons fire from the front. I could be wrong though.

      I was always annoyed at the laser-proton thing...but at least it's not as serious a problem as the neutron turret in EVO, which as actually a single cannon mounted on a turret as opposed to the two shown.

      While I'll agree with all of you that the mass driver is a waste of space in stock EV, frankly I find it the neatest and one of the most practical (aka possible in the near future) weapons in the game.

      The Mass Driver is a horrible weapon, meaning that it is just a waste of money to buy it.

      It'd be one thing if it was a primary-weapon, which is it not. The Neutron Cannon is way much better - I belive! 🙂

      In Galactic Scourge, both Neutron Cannons and Mass Drivers come with a turret version (the turrets have 3 mounted cannons for both weapons), both of which are very powerful, Neutron Cannons/Turrets and Mass Drivers/Turrets are all main weapons. There also the nice addition of the Guided Javelin (T-wing pirate interceptor with three launchers and a huge stock really rule). For some reason any time I mention Galactic Scourge I end up going on to point out off-topic features that I particularly like, for instance, the suicide shuttles that can blow up a Rebel Cruiser in one hit 😄

      I think that laser cannons, laser turrets, proton cannons, and proton turrets all suck. The nuetron blaster is truly a force to be reckoned with. I have a ship with 4 neutron blasters and it can tear ships to shreds. Of course, even though my ship is a kestrel, it cant take on a confederate cruiser. and, by the way, proton cannons are WWWWAAAAAYYYYY better than laser cannons.

      Wrong. Proton Turrets are better than Laser Turrets, but Laser Cannons are far better than Proton Cannons. Space is a serious issue on most ships where cannons, not turrets, are your primary weapon, so the Laser wins out there. Also, it's superior repeat rate and strong shield damage make it approximately as good as Protons against shields, and almost all EV ships (except Freighters that can't fight) have more shields than turrets, usually by a significant amount.
