The Rebel Manta / Confederation Patrol Ship poll has seemed to drift, so I need to post a new one to grab some additional information for a few upcoming web pages.

Now, this poll is between the Rapier, Lightning, Hawk, Manta, Gunboat, and Patrol Ship (I won't include the alien fighter). I won't post all the stats on these ships, since I'm sure you're already aware of their potential and weaknesses.

My vote goes for the Lightning. Fast, armed to the teeth, and reliable enough to bring you out of an engagement with warships.

Lightning. It's fast and armed to the teeth (for a fighter). The gunboat comes close though.

The Hawk, as someone pointed out to me, is not available to the player in the EV Stock senario, except as an onboard fighter. Because no one here can fly it, it may be best to exclude it from the survey.

Oh, and you left out the clipper. People don't usually call it a fighter, but even in its desc in the game it says something like, "...useful both as light courier or heavy figher..."

I never fly fighters, so I'm going with the manta, because its fast and I'm a Rebel.

ares: I'm aware that the Hawk isn't available in the common EV shipyard, but it's a fighter, so I've included it. I have flown them several times using the "Galactic Scourge" plugin...

This is a poll between the "true" fighters of Escape Velocity. The Clipper is usually regarded as a well-armed cargo hauler, and not exactly designed as a fighter (though the descriptions hints that it can be used for this purpose).

The only fighter I would ever fly is the Rapier, but it won't get my vote. The best dogfighter is by far the Lightning. It's heavily armed, fast, and can take out any other fighter when controlled by the AI. Lightning wins my vote on this fighter poll.

Does the Defender not get considered?

Gunboats arent that bad, are they? I find them a pain in the @$$ when flying for the Rebels. Those heavy rockets get on my nerves... and their sheilds are, I believe, fairly higher than those of the patrol ship, so I cannot knock them out with one torpedo. I have lost my already damaged kestrel to confed gunboats on several occasions. I think it deserves some credit, Macavenger.

Ares: Gunboats have the exact same amount if shielding as Patrol Ships. The only reason they are more menacing is because of the nasty amount of firepower they carry. If you can take a Gunboat out on the spot, they can't cause much more damage than a Patrol Ship.

Listen. It is possible , but very difficult to take out a 'Fed Cruiser with a Hawk. And like we have all said, the stock EV scenario does not allow you to fly a Hawk.

Wait, couldn't you board one and use it as your own ship? I may have found a loophole...

I cannot stand this poll. It's like too many political elections ... picking the "lesser of several evils."

Put me down for the Rapier. It sucks the least -- especially when you consider the Lightning is merely a "Super-Defender" as has been previously, repeatedly stated on other ship polls.

Lightning. Definitely. It's the only one that has no huge glaring weaknesses. Here are the glaring weaknesses of the others, to make a change from stating the GOOD points of the chosen fighter.

Gunboat: too slow and expensive.
Patrol ship: Expensive, low shields, low armament.
Manta: Not bad, but poorly armed and nonreplacable guns
Rapier. Too slow and clumsy for a fighter, and too low shields for a light capital ship.
Hawk: Dunno, i've never flown one. never appealed to me...
Defender: It''s a rusty tin can with engines and crap guns.

Yup. After six years of EV you've found a loophole that was previously undiscovered. Congratulations.

You can't board a Hawk, as it has no armor, and is impossible to disable. Once the shields are gone, the fighter's kaput.
