I recently downloaded a ship editor. I forget what game it was for, either EV or EVO. But it let you edit ALL of the ships in the game.
I have lost it in my humongous harddrive though. So, what's the name of it? And what section of downloads is it in?

    • Just use ResEdit. Most all the other stuff isn't much good. ResEdit is by far the best editor of any kind, all-purpose or not.

    • ResEdit and Shmelta-V are the only editors you need. I use Developers map once in a while... but stick to res and shmelta-v. Those are the best, most reliable plug-in development tools available. Resedit may be confusing, but EvEdit is -as a fellow ev-er put it - a lot like playing Russian Roullete

    • ResEdit isn't confusing in the slightest, and is the only editor needed. I should know, I'm not using anything else to make Alien Invaders, and the biggest elements in it are missions (Schmelta-Vs strength), and systems/spobs (Dev map).

Agreed. I've used ResEdit for the past few years, and it will get the job done quite well. However, I'm not familiar with this "Schmelta-V" program... Any information to describe it? If it is good with missions (as you say), I could definately find good use of it...

I'm going by reputation only on anything except EV-Edit and ResEdit. Those are the only two I have ever used for anything, and EV-Edit not for long at all. According to what I've seen on the dev board, Schmelta-V is primarily used for mission editing. I don't know if it's capable of editing other resources, or anything about how it works. ResEdit is so simple and easy, not to mention functional, that I've seen no point in trying anything else.

Space, you do have the EV Bible right? There's no way you're going to be able to grok ResEdit (and I'd imagine a fair number of other programs) without that. An on-line version is available (url="http://"http://www.evula.com/ev_bible/")here(/url), and a downloadable version is on the (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/ev/addons.html")addons(/url) page, I believe. That page has always seemed very slow though.

(edit) I might add that everyone on the dev board agrees that even using everything else out there, ResEdit is required to put the finishing touches on, if nothing else. If you want to make plugs, you're going to have to learn it eventually. (/edit)

    • i Downloaded one of the new utilities called EVOGod, one called PFE (Pilot File editor) and one called The Docks. Besides frequent crashes, thse work fine. All I need to understand are bits `n stuff like that. But I now understand most mission bits. I have the Mission Bit Editor also, so it's easy now. . . and it's WITHOUT ResEdit. It's simple!

Thanks to the makers of those programs!!

    • Hahah. Well, just remind me to never, ever use whatever plugin you make with those.

Skyblade: Shmelta-V has been around for a loooong time. Its very simple... i does Missions, personalities, and dudes, I think. I use it because it's easier than ResEdit for missions, and I use resedit for everything else except I once in a while use dev map. Go to the addons page and get shmelta-v. Its a good investment. (because its free) 🙂

And thanks to you for giving us fair warning that any plug you create should not be touched even with an 11-foot pole. 🙂

Doesn't matter what other editors you use, if you don't use ResEdit (or Resorceror) for the final clean-up and touch-up, you are practically guaranteed to have a buggy plug.

If you can't understand ResEdit, I wonder how you manage to dress and feed yourself, much less log onto this board 🙂 ResEdit does take some learning, and all its features are not immediately obvious, but if a bozo like me can learn to use it reasonably well, it ain't rocket science. There is an excellent guide in the add-ons section of the archives which has the rather obscure title "The Beginner's Guide to ResEdit for EV" - get it, read it, and learn to use ResEdit, the one absolutely essential tool for making plug-ins.

Some other enormously useful tools are EV Plug Checker and EVO Formula Calc (works fine for EV, or you could use the earlier EV-only version.)

To answer your original question, the ship editor is either "The Docks" or "Shipwrite." Neither of which is really necessary, though they may be somewhat more visually appealing and possibly easier to use than ResEdit.

Schmelta-V (the name being a pun on the old delta_v mailing list) is an editor released shortly after the original Escape Velocity (and written, I believe by one of the beta testers) that edits missions, persons, and one other resource - düdes, I think. It is, I suppose, slightly easier to use than ResEdit, although also slightly less stable. I used it for the older of the two mission strings in Talon, but I don't think I'd bother today.

    • I use ev-edit. I tried using Res Edit, but when I made a new document, all I got was some thing that had nothing in it. Is there a template or something that I need to download? If so, then where can I get it?

There should be a set of ResEdit templates that come with the EV Bible. If not, I can e-mail them to you (A bit later today, away from home comp now). Also, you have to modify some file tags on a new ResEdit file. Pick Get Info on file... (I think it is, similar at least), and change creator code to Merc (with dots on e, I'm on a Piece of Crap, can't do that here), and file type (?) to Mpif (dots over i). If you're totally confused, and I understand, I'll e-mail you a blank plug file too.

Oh, and Space, please do sign all your plugs with a name we'll recognize, so we can avoid them.

Macavenger is right; if you downloaded ResEdit from the Ambrosia site, you should have received along with it an EV ResEdit Templates file (and an EV Resorcerer file, too). Click (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/cgi-bin/vftp/dl-redirect.pl?path=ev/utilities&file;=EVBible.sit")here(/url) to download the complete EV Bible package if you don't have it.

But you may not need to if you do have EV-Edit. When you create a new plug using EV-Edit, click the check box where it says Install TMPL resources. The program will install ResEdit templates automatically.

Also: I strongly recommend that you download the Beginner's ResEdit Guide for Escape Velocity by Ray Hachey. You'll find it so helpful you'll want to pay money for using it. But you can't, because it's free. Download it (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/cgi-bin/vftp/dl-redirect.pl?path=ev/utilities&file;=ResEditBeginnersGuide.sit.hqx")here(/url). (I hadn't noticed that David Arthur had already suggested this guide. All the more reason to use it, then - David's pretty smart.)

    • Mac, I am totally confused. The templates are in the EV bible. How do I install them? And, I really don't understand the file tags. And, I'm running an emulated Mac, so I don't know how to type characters with dots over them. What's the command I need to do in order to type like that?

The ResEdit templates can be copied with ResEdit and pasted into a plug-in file you want to work on, or copied into the "ResEdit Preferences" file which is located in the Preferences folder inside the System folder. The two dots over a letter character (umlaut) is produced on a Mac by typing "option-u" and then typing the letter you want the umlaut over. The Mac "Option" key generally performs the same function as the PC "alt" key, but i don't know if "Alt-u" will produce the correct character. You could try copy and paste of the type and creator codes, or avoid the issue completely by making a duplicate of a plug-in file and removing all the existing resources in it, then adding whatever resources you want.

    • OK, I downloaded the ResEdit beginner's guide and it's very helpful. But, when I tried to do the keystroke to get the dots, I only got the dots. The dots showed up but there were no letters underneath. It's option+u+letter right? I did that and only got the dots. Anyone know what's goin' on? And, btw, I really appreciate your help.

When you use ResEdit to open the templates file, you'll see an icon with the letters TMPL beneath them. You'd select and copy it. You then use ResEdit to open the plug you've started that lacks templates. Paste the TMPL icon into that file, then save. You're done.

The two-dots-over-a-character thing is called an umlaut. On a Windows machine, you'd...

      one: hold down the ALT key while typing a particular number code; which code depends on what letter-umlaut combination you want to type (for Ä, type 0196 - for Ë, 0203 - Ď 0207- Ö 0214 - Ü 0220 - Ÿ 0159 - ä 0228 - ë 0235 - ď 0239 - ö 0246 - ü 0252 - ˙ 0255)

or two: open the Character Map program that comes with Windows, locate the particular letter-umlaut combination you want, copy it and paste it where you want

or three: download the freeware program (url="http://"http://www.kagi.com/vfstudio/umlaut.htm")Umlaut Assistant(/url) from Kagi.

Watch out! The plug-in bugs show up subliminally! That's why you should have a beta testing team. I just wonder who would want to volunteer for an extensive bug clean-up... which you'll do in EV Edit
