    • Cruiser Poll

      Rebel, Confederate, or Alien?

Keep in mind, I'm asking your preference, not which one performs better in battle.

I say Rebel. It's fast, furious, and cool looking. Cheaper, too.

      ------------------
This is the end of my post.

    • All of us who have seen polls like this before know that the Rebel Cruiser will win by a huge margin. 🙂

Rebel Cruiser all the way. Very agile for its size, some nasty firepower, and rather fast.

    • Rebel.
I predict one vote for the Confed and about 10 for the Rebel, plus maybe a couple for alien if some people new to EV decide to post.

    • I can't say I particularly like any of the cruisers. They're all far too slow, not to mention overpriced. Give me a Corvette any day.

    • Ok, if David doesn't vote for the Confederate Cruiser, I will do. With the engine upgrades, all armor and shield upgrades, a missile jammer and afterburner, I can outmaneouver even missiles (well most of them). The shielding and armor makes the ship almost invincible, the only real disadvantage is that I have to go back to Sol too often to replace those damn Patrol Ships

Wow...I expected you to take a Confederation Cruiser anyday.

BTW, congrats on an extra karma point.

The heavy cruiser is effective in AI battles, but I find it, like the Rebel and Alien cruisers, far too slow for day-to-day use.

They certainly are slow when compared to smaller vessels, but even you have to admit that the Rebel Cruiser holds a leading edge over the Confed Cruiser in terms of speed and menuverability. If the Rebel Cruiser had a small bit of extra shielding, it would tear the Confederation Cruiser to shreds.

    • The rebel cruiser is an all purpose cruiser! Good speed, good sheild, good weapons and good looks!

    • I'd rather be in a Defender than a Confed Cruiser, the thing is too slow. I might consider being in a Rebel Cruiser for a while, and maybe an Alien Cruiser, but I'd rather have my own upgraded version of a Lightning. Cruisers just stink.

It baffles me that people continue to blow space on their cruisers for shield upgrades in EV. Do you know how much they add to your shielding? In the shipyard the Confed Cruiser is listed as having 800 shielding (from memory, sorry if I'm a little off). At that rate, the 3 ton shield boosters each add a whopping 1.5 shielding. So if you get all 4 boosters that you're allowed to, you have a total of 806 shielding. What an increase! For 12 tons of space your shielding has leapt up by .75%. You'll be able to survive an additional 5 individual blasts from a proton cannon. The shield boosters are useful on smaller ships like fighters, however. If you put 4 boosters on a Lightning, you jump from 25 to 31 shielding. That's a 24% increase. Boosters might even be worthwhile on something as large as a Corvette (8.6% increase), but for any bigger ship you'd probably do better using that space for additional ammo. I'd certainly prefer 12 more torps over an unnoticeable shield increase.

Oh, yeah - Rebel Cruiser. But I prefer their Destroyer.

1.5? I thought it was 15! And why do you worry about space in a Confed Cruiser? When I sell the four useless Neutron Blasters, I have about 140 tons more space free. And torpedos? I prefer close combat, so I rely on Heavy Rockets only! The long range distraction is done by my Patrol ships. You see?

    • It says 15. If you poke in the resources though, you'll figure out it's only 1.5. I usually use a patch that fixes this.

    • Yah, seems like you're right on that 1.5! :frown:
I bought a Defender and slapped a shield capacitor on, and it didn't feel exactly like two and a half times the old shielding. HOWEVER, the Defender's great, I think I'll use it instead of the boring Confed Cruiser 😉

    • i hatethose bigger ships. yeah, they have impressive firepower, but i cant stand their big, lumbering profile. however, to stay in the poll, i'd choose the rebel, even though i would rather be in a clipper or argosy.

I prefer the Alien Cruiser, but I have never flown it.
I suspect all the Rebel Cruiser fans are not familiar with the Alien CA.

      Stats:
      Holds 50 // cargo
Shield -3000 // 1,500 shields in the game
Accel 600 // "Average" acceleration in the game
      Speed 350
      Maneuver 2 // 60 degrees/sec, "Poor" in the game
Fuel 20000 // 200 jumps worth of fuel
FreeMass 60 // available expansion space
      Armor 0
ShieldRe 240 // Shield recharge, Rebel CA ShieldRe is 180 Confed CA is 360, lower is better
...<weapons, you know them: Fusion beam, 4 alien fighters, 80 seekers>
      MaxGun 12
      MaxTur 4
...<miscellaneous things like mass, techlevel, cost skipped>

The Alien CA has excellent firepower, and it is faster than the Rebel Destroyer. Nothing Else in EV is even close.

Even if the Alien CA was slower than the Confed CA, I would prefer the Alien CA because of its tremendous shields. The superfast fighters would compensate for lack of speed.
