Alright, this is another poll / survey to go along with the "Proton vs. Laser Turret" post. Here's a few facts:

Mass Driver
Reload: 25
Mass Damage: 15
Emergy Damage: 30
Speed: 350
Inaccuracy: 1
Cost: 30,000 credits
Mass: 40 tons

Neutron Blaster
Reload: 30
Mass Damage: 10
Emergy Damage: 30
Speed: 325
Inaccuracy: 2
Cost: 30,000 credits
Mass: 35 tons

While the Mass Driver appears to carry a lead in mass damage, speed, and accuracy. The Neutron Blaster weighs less, but not by a wide margin. The mass driver also reloads a tad bit faster, so I'll throw my vote for the mass driver. The Neutron Blaster is sometimes considered a Confederation weapon, so I wouldn't touch it.

Mass driver all the way. I am not sure how much better it is in my opinion, but
it seems to kill anything faster.

Between Mass Drivers and Neutron Blasters, I'd have to go with Proton Turrets.

Also, Skyblade, get your numbers straight. You screwed up the Drivers damage ratings. It should be:

Energy Damage:0

Ah-hah! I did find the problem...I have three copies of Escape Velocity, which I use for a variety of reasons. The copy I was viewing in Res Edit was the one my older brother had been messing around with. Sorry about that...

After messing the game up bad enough that I couldn't remember everything I'd done with ResEdit and having to reinstall to get a clean data file, I learned to do all my hacking in plug files. This way, you don't screw the data file up so bad that you can't undo it.

Even without the facts, I would say the railgun (mass driver).
Reasons:

Cooler sound
Cooler picture
Cheaper (I think the neutron cannon costs 35,000)
Seems to do an amazing amound of damage on any ship.

my vote goes for Mass Driver too. It seems to have no shield damage, but in fact in can drain a ship's shields quickly, and is even better against armor. It's also cheaper, costing 30,000 when the Neutron Cannon costs 3 5 ,000.

that is because none of you sillies seem to remember the damage formula hee hee

damage to shields = ( ShieldDam + ( ArmorDam / 4 ) )
damage to armor = ( ArmorDam + ( ShieldDam / 4 ) )

So, the mass driver does 7.5 to shields, 30 to armor.
The neutron blaster does 32.5 to shields, 17.5 to armor.

Adjusted for reload, the damages are thus:

Per time unit, Neutron blaster: 32.5 vs Shield, 17.5 vs Armor
Per time unit, Mass driver: 9 vs Shield, 36 vs Armor
(Per time unit, the laser cannon deals 10.5 vs Shield, 4.5 vs Armor)

The Neutron blaster packs more of a punch overall, and, more importantly, hits where it counts: shields. however, both weapons encounter serious problems when it comes to speed and range.

the Mass driver is just over 7% faster than the Neutron blaster, but, more importantly, it persists for a longer time. the total range of the mass driver is about 75% greater than the range of the neutron blaster. (the laser cannon has a range 160% greater than the neutron blaster's). the slow speed of these weapons makes them impractical against small ships, while their short range makes them difficult to use against the larger ships as well, because the large ships are so heavily armed for close range combat. hee hee

of course, the biggest problem with these weapons is that they require an obscene quantity of weapon space. if, in theory, you were able to pack eight 5-ton laser cannons into the 40-ton space required by a mass driver, you'd have an 84 vs Shield, 36 vs Armor (adjusted for reload) weapon. this hypothetical conglomerated laser weapon is clearly far superior to either the mass driver or the neutron blaster. hee hee

if i had to pick one of these weapons, i would choose the mass driver. its range and speed make it slightly more tolerable. however, you would be far better off putting something else in the weapon space.. like missiles! i love missiles. hee hee

Right, and that's why I bought these weapons only once in my lifetime. They have both a very serious disadvantage:

They are a waste of money and weapon-space!

For me, they are both completely useless, so I cannot give any points.
