Just out of curiousity...a couple of people are talking about how 'in their clipper'...i find this stupid because every time ive played this game ive got the same ship order:
Shuttle
Courier
Lightning
Corvette
Kestral
i dont know if this is the best way or anything but its my favourite and Im no pro so im just wondering what everybody else uses...

Rebel Destroyer (paid for by proton turrets )

Prior to Skunko7's EV Challenge my ship order was different. EV Challenge gave me greater respect for the capabilities of the Scoutship. (Thanks, Skunko.)
Shuttle
Scout -- Great for Starbound, UGE and escort missions. Lousy in a dogfight. (So, RUN!!!)
Corvette -- Now that I've been patient, I don't run anymore (heh, heh).
Destroyer

For me, its:
shuttle
Scoutship
Whatever ship I manage to capture with the scoutship (last time out, it was a Kestral, but I've also captured Corvettes, and once, a Rebel Destroyer)
I outfit the Scoutship with 2 javelin pods, two missile launchers and 10 missiles ( for lightnings when I encounter a pirate Kestral) an afterburner, and the upgrades.
Then its a matter of circling the enemy until he's out of missiles, and then MontyPythoning him to disablement, with javelin missiles.

Scoutship <-- like the speed and more cargo space
Light freighter <-- Running a commodity route from Zaxted to Diphidia.
Lightning <-- Running the same commodity route - the fast speed means I can
land before a bunch of pirates that always show blow up my 6 light freighters.
Once I have the money to upgrade the Lightning properly, I go pirate some Kestrels
to make loads of money.
Corvette <-- Sometimes straight to the Kestrel.
Kestrel <-- I like it. It's good. And a nice ship for the Alien missions, too.
Rebel Destroyer/rarely a Rebel Cruiser <-- I prefer the Destroyer's speed in the
end, and have this as my ultimate ship, unless I've grown attached to my Kestrel

That the designers of EV made the Destroyer too good?
Plus, like I said I keep the Kestrel 5/10 of the time, the Rebel Destroyer
only 4/10, and the Rebel Cruiser 1/10.
So I don't count either.

Nothing to do with this: Did any body ever find a (escourt carier ship) direlek(?) wich had the plans for a Krestel.You had to go to Draven ad show them the plans.Later they would sell it to you for 6-7 mil.
