You're missing the point. There's a SOUNDTRACK (that loud, repetitive music playing in the background) and there's SOUND EFFECTS that are crucial to gameplay.
Deleting the music.dat file has the same effect as just turning the sound off in the game's option screen. It's an all or nothing affair, you lose some of the game's feedback in the process.
For this game to be playable by sane adults with ears, there needs to be a way to lower the volume of the SOUNDTRACK (or turn it OFF,) while still keeping the assorted sound effects that occasionally are played during gameplay.
