I turned off the music, but now no sound plays. How can I fix this?

I have found this problem, even under OSX.
I cannot find any solution, im a bit annoyed by it as I would like to be able to play my own music in the back ground.

Unfortunately Uplink has no seperate settings for Music and sound. If you don't like the music just delete the music.dat file in the Uplink directory.

Well I have deleted it and I got no music, so I don't know what the deal is, but it would seem hard to play the music if there is no music.

Exactly. I installed Uplink and it had sound and music. Then I deleted the music.dat file and then it had no music. Music.dat contains all the music files so without it there is no way for Uplink to play the music.

It gets in the way of the sound effects, because the music is too loud. And it's not like one can turn the music down...
By the way, it doesn't work. I took the music.dat file and stuck it on my other hard drive, while deleting the original. The sound effects still don't work. No sound. Nothing.

You're missing the point. There's a SOUNDTRACK (that loud, repetitive music playing in the background) and there's SOUND EFFECTS that are crucial to gameplay.
Deleting the music.dat file has the same effect as just turning the sound off in the game's option screen. It's an all or nothing affair, you lose some of the game's feedback in the process.
For this game to be playable by sane adults with ears, there needs to be a way to lower the volume of the SOUNDTRACK (or turn it OFF,) while still keeping the assorted sound effects that occasionally are played during gameplay.
If you read the bugs thread, you'll see that, due to the way the game is coded, it would be hard to add a setting to lower the game's volume. However, a suggestion crept up there too that someone decode the music file and replace it with more silent/mute data. The mute data would then act as "Music Off" while the quieter soundtrack could be used for a "Volume Setting"-replacement.
As it stands now, though, it's an all or nothing affair and it doesn't seem to be on the upfront list to change judging from the bugs thread responses.

This is a known issue, and according to Chris Jacobson, the programmer who converted Uplink from the PC:
"This is a limitation of the sound and music engine."
With how it is programmed now, it would require a lot of work to make it function as you are describing, and probably won't happen anytime soon.

Apparently some people have gotten it to work by deleting the Music.dat file and KEEPING the SOUND EFFECTS working. There is no need to be rude. People try to be helpful here.

In the PC version you can turn off the music and keep the sound effects. Obviously the sound system wasn't ported acuratly.

Does anybody know an applications that support the .uni format used inside the zipped music.dat files? I'm hopping there is because somebody converted the Uplink music to AAC, or maybe they just recorded it. Anyway INFO please...

Im the one that converted it to AAC... I used a program called PlayerPro wich recently went open source.
