    • Uplink interview/release date (?)

      24 47 581

An interview with the developer of Uplink has just been posted at (url="http://"http://www.gamershell.com/reviews_UplinkInterview.shtml")http://www.gamershel...Interview.shtml(/url)

It's especially interesting for anyone who doesn't know much about Uplink yet.

Also of interest is, at the top of the page, a release date of February 2003. I'm not sure if this is a typo, whether it somehow relates to the PC version of the game, or is actually the real thing (it's conceivable since it's a port and who knows how long Ambrosia's been working on it already), but it's certainly worth noting. What do you all think?

edit: at the contraband status page ( (url="http://"http://www.contrabandent.com/products.html")http://www.contraban...m/products.html(/url) ) I see that Uplink is at beta and available "very soon," so it seems that a release this month could be possible

(This message has been edited by themage (edited 02-03-2003).)

    • It's all very confusing... It says Strategy First is working the port but I've never heard of them... It does mention the original game by Introversion... And I know the thing won't be coming out this month, the progress log doesn't even hint at beta testing yet!
Than again I'm pretty sure this isn't the port Ambrosia is working on. Quote:
"What kind of audience is Uplink intended for?
We’ve had great responses from Gamers, Hackers, IT professionals, and Linux Penguins."
This bit really confused me as the original game from Introversion covered both Windows and Linux users, plus this is a Mac port being made...
      Aack, I'm really confused.

just hit beta, they say one month, and I think Contraband is doing the port, same as Nova for windows.

You'd be correct, and since I'm so happy, I'll let you all in on a little something which isn't a secret because it's plain out there on the Update Logs... It's very very close to completion! 🙂

    • It will be released when it is done

    • Uplink needs a save button.

      ------------------

    • I believe the release date listed is for the re-release of the PC version. The Mac version, according to Ambrosia's Upcoming page, is not yet in beta.

    • Here's something I picked up on Introversion's site...:
"The Mac port of Uplink is getting close to completion now. By our estimates, you should be able to buy it within a month."

Major, no it doesn't need a save button. Every time you exit the game it auto saves. Ohhh... Sparklesparkle

      Edit: Fixed some stuff

While the port may be almost complete, the game is still in development and has not hit beta testing yet. Beta testing can be quick or it can take a long time, depending on what is found.

So while being excited is alright, try to contain yourselves for a little while longer... 🙂

Strategy First probably is doing the port. These days, I don't think Ambrosia really does much anymore in relation to the games they release. I think they're just a publisher of other people's games. The small developer gets Ambrosia's name on their product, which is good for them (after all, what percentage of Mac users DON'T know about Ambrosia?), and Ambrosia gets some money, which is good for them.

You might think this, but you would be incorrect.

Ambrosia is indeed a publishing company, but they do actively participate in game development and testing. They have created many mac libraries that are included in many games(so that the wheel doesn't have to be continually re-invented), they provide artistic support, they can help track down bugs, make suggestions/give ideas, etc.

Ambrosia also still does "in-house" projects, though the majority of projects right now are through 3rd party developers(to my knowledge).
