    • Roll Call!

      11 22 1903

Um, first of all, just for future reference, could I just know everyone who plays Avara on a regular basis (read: once or twice a month)? Second, I was reading some of the old topics where everyone was arguing about the Megaserver, and someone suggested that instead of having a server up 24/7, someone could host a server at specified days/times, like bingo night or something. would there be people here in favor of that, or do not enough people play anymore to make it worth the effort? It would be alot better than trying to find a random server somewhere on the net. I haven't played against another hector yet, and I want to do so before noone touches this game again.

    • I play once every month or two, is that close enough? I would host a regular server, but I don't have the time, really... or I have the time, but it's not always at the same time, except at really incovenient times. (I'll gladly host a server at 1am Sunday morning! (PST) :p) If you get really desperate then email me (the link should be in my profile) and we can set up a time... Still, if someone regularly hosted a server, that would be really nice.

    • I don't regularly play because there's never anyone on.
However, I would probably play if there was a designated time.

      ------------------
The box said Windows 95 or greater...so why doesn't it work on a Mac?

    • I play... Sometimes... Maybe the required once or twice a month,n but if there was a regular server I would play more.

    • Can different people serve regularly? I could probably dedicate myself once a month or so to keep a server up for two or three hours - if we can get three other people to do the same, then voila we have a weekly server time. So, is there anyone else who can serve at least once pere month on say a Friday evening or sometime on Saturday?

    • That's what I was thinking of. Everyone could take turns serving every week or, if that's not possible, people could just volunteer whenever. I can't currently host because I'm having some technical trouble, but I might start once I have everything sorted out. Anyway, I just wandted to see if anyone still played enough for it to be worth it. But since it seems favored, well... I guess we've stumbled onto something here.

    • I could probably host around 11:00 PM - onwards EST on a weekend... I only have a 56k line though, but it if I can host decent-sized games of Ghost Recon on it, it shouldn't be too bad, and it doesn't seem that a whole lot of people seem to be playing Avara at the moment... I'd be willing to give it a try.

    • I play if someone sends me an IM when a server is up.

    • So the idea is to have hundreds of people each run a 1 hour block every month so that there's always a server.

This is the kind of idea you get in the absence of the MegaServer.

If like 10 people can only play once a month and they're hosting during their times, then there's not going to be anyone in the server. If you want to get this game jumping, you're going to have to do a bit more than play once or twice a month. It seems like you'd rather have everyone else get the game going so that during your hour there will definitely be someone to play with. If you can't make a committment to the game, fine, but don't talk about it restarting if that's your attitude.

I am a regular player. Not the "required once or twice a month", I play daily. There are servers every day, usually run by Tomahawk or Sphinx, sometimes others. Just join them.

To Robert, where do you live? If you're Euro then we're asleep when you're around. But if you play between 4-6 EST then there's a good chance you'll find someone.

There is no such thing as the MegaServer. Stop lying and let Ambrosia run Avara the way they want (I think it was once run on berserkir). If they want to take the online play server down, they can do that. You were banned for a reason.

To everyone else: yeah, I was going to start playing Avara, but the online play feature seems to have been taken down, unfortunatly. Maybe Andrew or Tom can answer this on IRC...

The tracker is working fine. I just started a server, and it showed up on the tracker in 3 seconds.
The problem is on your end. RTFM again.

No, the idea is to have someone (or someones) host games every day or at least every weekend for much longer than an hour. When I said "once or twice a month," I meant AT LEAST, not only. I knew alot of people don't play very often.

I didn't suggest this for me only, I suggested it because I love this game. It's special, it's fun, and it's the only FPS I'm good at. I don't expect othe people to do the dirty work; I'm more than willing to make a comittment and do my fair share.

And no, I don't live in Europe, I live in Ohio.

Sorry for any confusion I caused.

I didn't think that there would be a webboard for Avara.
      Isn't this game really old?
Funny they have one for Avara, but not some other,
      more recent ones.

You do have a point, there IS no such thing as the MegaServer, but don't call me a liar because of it. I never claimed a MegaServer exists either. That's what "Absence of" would suggest...an absence...

There was a MegaServer in the past however and it provided just the service people are discussing here, a place to play. I'm a bitcher, I bitch about things and don't let them die...

      Now about the banning,

In a literal sense, I was banned for a reason, someone accused me of crashing them and Andrew believed it.

In a just sense, I wasn't banned for a reason because I didn't crash anyone.

I don't think I know who you are so I don't know why you're so hostile towards me but whatever.

And FYI Robert, that post wasn't really directed towards you, it was towards rebelswin who complained about the MegaServer in the past and then started talking about some sort of serving system. Thank you for not getting hostile in your response, I respect ya man. Sorry if I seem like a dick to you, I don't mean it.

I've argued this with you before, and it sounds as though Robert has read it, so I will allow him to judge the merit of the various arguments himself. I want only to point out that what I am suggesting is different from the MegaServer. Simply speaking for myself, the MegaServer was not enough to get me to play, primarily because I didn't know if anyone was playing. In that way it was no different from the current system of whoever happens to be online starting a server. If I knew that at least one person would be online at a given time once a week or so, then I would make greater efforts to play at that one time, and I could work it into my schedule.

They actually wanted their post to be seen, and they knew if they posted in the main Avara forum page, it'd be swamped among all the other hundreds of new posts being made every day. 😛

You act like Ambrosia sent goons into your house to destroy the server. No, you acted like a ***** on the Avara tracker, and so they banned your server from connecting to it

No I didn't. They banned me because they thought I acted like a ****. The first time. The subsequent times were because I acted like a "various asterisks" on the board and in e-mail.

I don't act like a jackass on the tracker enough to have warranted a ban. Anywhere else is fair game, but I don't mess with the game.
