    • Maya PLE 5.0 is out and FREE!

      (url="http://"http://www.alias.com/eng/products-services/maya/maya_ple/index.shtml")http://www.alias.com...ple/index.shtml(/url)

Looks like we now have a decent program to create graphics that won't cost you an arm and a leg.

A man who's out to save Gidolan Keep, flies an Auroran ship, and hacks into computers to keep the bricks from falling past the line of destiny? Yep, that's me!

    • Looks nice, but I guess I'll stick on to Strata 3D 😛

Maybe download it sometime and try it out 😉

    • Strata's easier, even if it isn't as powerful. With any luck they'll add Nurbs to Strata 3D 4.0

Umm, that program seem incredably expensive to me. $1999 is a lot.

      From the Alias Product Page:
Maya Personal Learning Edition now available for Maya Complete 5 Maya Personal Learning Edition is a special version of MayaŽ software, which provides free access to Maya for non-commercial use. It will give 3D graphics and animation students, industry professionals, and those interested in breaking into the world of computer graphics (CG) an opportunity to explore all aspects of the award winning Maya Complete™ software in a non-commercial capacity.

      (my italics)

So using Maya PLE is fine... as long as you don't plan to sell your game. Keep that in mind. 🙂

    • Warning: (url="http://"http://www.alias.com/eng/products-services/maya/maya_ple/faq.shtml")PLE watermarks anything you render(/url).

They say that if you play a Windows Install CD backwords, you hear satanic messages. That's nothing; play it forward and it installs Windows.
      --thanks to TBobMac

    • Can you take a screenshot of whatever you have rendered to bypass the watermark?

    • I'd love to have it, but I am going to download it until my family gets a DSL line. 110 MB is too much for my pokey dial-up modem. They also ask for too much information, but I found a way around this. Just put a - in any line that is required but you don't want to give them. 🆒

Boo! Did I scare you? No? BOO! How about now? Good!

    • Hmm, I wouldn't post stuff like that in THIS forum, LifeKnight. Especially with people like Stark around ;).

Well, I think it's okay for that kind of "workaround." I know it sounds strange, but if it's a free download and you know that you can't use the freebee in a game you plan to sell, I don't see that you HAVE to give out personal information. I suspect that they want your info to try to get you to buy the real thing, which is why they put out the download in the first place. Try, then buy. What I'm really saying is that I don't think that there's anything illegal about LifeKnight's workaround.

LifeKnight's workaround is not illegal in the least. Unethical, sure, as the company is providing a free resource and is only asking for some information about who downloads it. If you aren't willing to pony up that information then you shouldn't be downloading it. But it isn't illegal so do as you wish.

Thunderforge's workaround, if it does indeed bypass the watermark(which I'm not sure it would), would be illegal and I would highly recommend against doing something like that.

The bottom line is that if you want to market your game for profit, then you will need to spend money to make money in the end. This is called business.

    • screen cap...

the same model could ideally be made in any current capable modelling software, they have no way of knowing they just assume that you'll operate in goodFaith.

The whole point of the PLE is to inject the market with Maya professionals...who will bolster its position as 'industry standard'.

...and obviously to curb piracy, aye, i mean arr, uhm "..."

    • is there a free strata 3d ??
      if so,
could someone be so kind as to forward it unto me

    • If you want I could send you a copy of strata 3D base 3.5. This was the only free version of strata that was not a demo. It is classic only and has a lot of features taken out eg animation, but most of the basic modeling tools are there. if you want more power then you will have to fork out Ł470 for Strata pro.

Or, you could just download the free trial from (url="http://"http://www.strata.com")www.strata.com(/url) (you will have to order it in the store to be able to download it). That would be better I think 😉

    • It only works for 30 days though. Savings disabled after that. Then again if you are just trying then it is your best option

    • Blender. (url="http://"http://www.blender.org/")http://www.blender.org/(/url)

No documentation, but if you have used Maya or another 3D modeller before it isn't that hard to figure out. It's free and runs on anything and everything. What can beat that?

Thunderforge is sorry that he suggested something illegal. He did not know that it was. Please forgive Thunderforge.

    • If you want to get rid of the watermark,= and don't intend for the file to leave your computer, then I suppose it would be OK. If you want to distribute the file or graphic, then leave the watermark on (provided you don't get paid). If you intend to use a graphic you created in Maya PLE in a game you are going to SELL, then you have to pay the $2000.
