    • The 3d program that creatted the original myst was called Strata Studio 2.5 Pro. I picked it up several years ago for free with a magazine I purchased. I do not know what the program that put it all together was called.

      Pedrith 🙂

    • Some programming tool like Code Warrior (or wich one the proffesionals are using :p) or something like that I think ;).

    • It was actually Strata Vision but StudioPro is close enough (they have changed the name enough. Now its just Strata 3D). The program that they put it together in was hypercard.

    • Hypercard?? Isn't that some kind of amateur program for making games with cards that have 3 buttons to go to another card???

    • Have you never heard of Hypercard? The APPLE programme that you could make apps with.

    • HyperCard was sort of like PowerPoint. You had various slides, you could link to the slides by pressing buttons, and it could play sounds and stuff. Well, HyperCard also had it's own brand of scripting commands. Myst was more or less like this. The (amazing even by recent standards) graphics were the card itself. If you clicked on the left edge of the screen, then you would be clicking on a button which takes you to a new slide. Also, the transition, was left to right, making the illusion that you are turning left. Now some of the stuff, like cursors and going to various slides depending on what you have done (ex. going from slide with the red page on the counter to a slide that is exactly the same, but doesn't have the red page) was all done by the scripting. And since HyperCard always began on the first slide, save games always loaded and the beginning of the age (each of the five ages was a separate HyperCard stack).

Future versions of Myst and it's sequels did not use HyperCard (the biggest benefit is probably that you can save anywhere). As for HyperCard, it slowly died. A similar product, HyperStudio, still exists, and is available for Windows as well as Mac.

    • Beenox.com says that it is currently developing a game called Vatz which is created by an engine called Goliath (page is (url="http://"http://beenox.com/game_vatz.shtml")here(/url)). Beenox says that this engine can create shooters and Real Time Strategy games. The only thing is, Beenox says that it isn't going to release it!!!

    • Which is unfortunate because if they gave it a coldstone like interface it would be a brilliant game creation tool. They could do one better and make it part of coldstone.

    • old news...

that engine has been around before the 1.0.1 update.

to connect the dots, beenox gained fame an fortune with some major ports of console games, became a licensed xBox developer, and will likely use that engine to publish a string of subsequent titles.

Said titles would be visually slightly below games such as the new Shinobi and Metal Gear SOL ( an acronym and an ironic pun all in one...glee ). Think of the graphics in Tekken 2 or 3.

the Goliath engine is an industrial grade tool, perhaps you can't see the scope of it, but a less attractive older aging engine would go for $2000-$12,000 for commercial usage. With knowledge of a Graphics library / 3D api (openGL, SDL) it could take you; 18 months to 2 years to develop a 3d engine capable or reproducing a game with the parcels of the 8-16bit era(NES/Genesis-SNES).

this comes up every month or so as Coldstone tarries, search for goliath vatz and some other keywords and experience the dementia.

By the by, HyperCard was a RAD(rapid application development tool), it was not a slideshow builder.
The cards are no different to the many windows/ssubsecction of applications that exist today, similar to tabbed applications...you could in effect house a multitude of programs/applications in a single suite/stack.

GameMaker was born in i believe 1997, made by Al Staffieri Jr.

A string of better and worse tools preceed it, worldbuilder, drawmaze, sworddream/sworddream3d.

The card graphical adventure is the product of the original adventure games/graphical adventures where in the player was nameless and the game had a 1st person point of view. This coupled with the success of Myst led him to create GM. He embued it with the essentials of the genre, and has since beeen steadily working to add sprites etc, however constantly overlooking the need for a completely custom interface. Its brother, SilverCreator, is a little over 2.5 years old and has many features of the former, and is free, both have a simpler than BASIC syntax, and with the addition of non-flickering animation can be used to create decent games.

Hypercard spawned--just about every app with 'Card, and RealBasic has been heralded as its successor, in what it brings to mac development.

**Are you planning on making any tools available for Goliath?
      |We may look into the possibility of licensing this engine to other game studios but there is no plan to make it available to the public for now. This is going to be our internal technology for the next years or so, and we don't want to give it away.

This is from an interview with dee brown. This does give a small glimpse of hope for a coldstone type program based on the goliath engine. If they did make one i would happily pay whatever they asked for it (as long as it was reasonable)
