You will need Coldstone (obviously), and unless you want to use the graphic library distributed with Coldstone, then you will need some sort of graphics package to create your sprites. I recommend (url="http://"http://www.hash.com")Animation Master(/url), it's extremely powerful for something comparitavly cheap ($299, whereas mostt decent graphics packages cost at least $800).

Ladies and Gentlemen, as you know we have something special for you at
Birdland this evening.A recording for Blue Note Records...
Let's get this straight here: there is no end-all, be-all software package in existance. Even if there was, we probably wouldn't want it. Case in point: Microsoft tried to turn their word processor into a page layout program a few years ago, and ended up with Word 6, arguably one of the worst word processors ever to have hit the Mac.
Coldstone is a game creation engine. Part of it's appeal to many is that it will let you use your own media files in your game. Which means I can use software I already have licenses for, and am extremely familiar with, to create my graphics, movies, sounds or music. Coldstone will not make graphics, movies, sounds, or music for you. If it did, it wouldn't see release for years and even then the "Coldstone Paint" program wouldn't stack up to dedicated software.
Realizing that a lot of people don't have the talent or resources required to create their own media for their game, Ambrosia and Beenox are going to ship Coldstone with a library of graphics, sound and music. If you have no problem using the included media, you don't need other software.
For those of us who can create own media, the ability to use externally generated media in our games is a great boon.

People who claim the sky is falling obviously aren't aware the earth is falling, too.
For all My spit and glue developers out there this is tyhe easiest way to create resources, that are bright,colorful,and...whatever.
Anyway : (this method works on any file with a resource fork)
1.locate resedit (probably on apples site)
2.Learn and get familiar with it
3.use the "cicn" resource to paint appropriate size icons
3a.use appleworks, a draw document, paste and save as a pict file
---------
4.open up and rip sounds and such from different games and programs
4a. open a new file, copy and paste the sound resource into the new window
4b. use the type "sfil" and the creator "movr" to convert sound, to apple sound files.
this will allow you to utilize sounds and graphics(only 2d, but graphics nonetheless),
compatible with practically any mac program. It's free and easy to do, once you start.
anote don't use sound files you know will get you into trouble, (like someone saying a catch phrase).

'cept the music from the final battle with Sephiroth, y'know the one with the opera singing...uh yeaaah.
any way The best thing to do is use a sequence of sounds and background noises to set the mood, make sure they're not annoying no likes to hear the sound of foot steps a million times(exile,TombRaider, and any other game where I have to run around).
Just make sure your sounds are muted (if in the background), that way your average user
can play their favorite CD in the foreground without being disturbed by your poor taste in music.

actually I think there is not a single word processor that can take the title of "good".
I mean come on. Microsoft word has given me gray hair, and I'm still in my teens.

Actually, there is. It's called a "mom".
Does anyone have some suggestions for a good and easy to learn music composing program? I have minimal microphone support (not to mention minimal music talent), so I need one with drum and keyboard synthesizers and such, for Mac, PC, or Both.

"Riping" is done all the time. No one seems to care, I've heard many game sounds in multiple different games. Exile III and Realmz have many sprites that are exactly the same. (no lie!) If you give all of the objects you "rip" a slight modification, such as changing the color for a sprite, or even resizing, no one should even notice.
As for picking programs to make sound, graphics, and movies, don't expect to go out and buy an expensive program and expect to have a vast library of graphics by the time coldstone is out. I have several different 3D modelers, though I don't know cr*p about using any of them. I've never even seen a decent tutorial. I've made many great tutorials with pagemaker and photoshop, but I haven't got the know-how.

Another reason to use the graphics that come with Coldstone is if you can't possibly make any graphics that measure up to them. I am fairly adept at using 3D modeling programs, and still the best I can make is the ion engine I posted in the EV Pics forum. I have a hard time surpassing the EVO ships in continuity of form. What I need to learn that no tutorial can teach is technique.

You could probably draw your sprites for character's in something as simple as AppleWorks.

LIGHTWAVE 6.5!!!! Guys, it's all you need for your graphics needs. Well, maybe a paint program for textures, but light wave does everything...
Only problem is it's 2G price tag. Ouch :frown:
Hey remember that whole thing a bout learning C++ to build game engines
why not try RealBasic instead it's easier and more versatile and also takes up less memory, (I have a nearly completed game that is about 1.3 mb)
I mean thats how they built CGE, the only reason POG is huge is cuz' all the extravagant bells and whistles...

dude, ever heard of Quark? (technically it's not really a word processor program, but I mean, you can use it for that.....and it's waaaaaaay better than anything that will ever bear the "Microsoft" seal...shiver)
and, on teh topic of Music...to be slightly hypocritical for the moment.....if you have a friend who has a moderatly speedy PC (I know I know, perish the thought...) and feel that freaky techno music is in order for your RPG (which hey, you never know, might give it a cool edge) there is and extremely cool program called FruityLoops that you can use to make very cool personal techno music....it just takes a bit of getting used to, but once you ge tthe hang of it, you can make some cool tracks....then (if you have the full version, which you can and should purchase legitimatly) you can save it as an MP3, and put it on some kind of removable media and put it on your mac! I know this probably isn't even an option for the average person who wants to make a cool RPG with coldstone, but for those of us with the resources, I'd say go for it! Ya never know...the end product might be really sweet!

I can't say I can see eye to eye with you on this one. Properly done game music can be a very powerful tool. In many ways, music is one of the most powerful tools you have at your disposal, in games, movies, really any sort of media. Rip the soundtrack out of a good movie, like say Braveheart, and you've just got Mel Gibson shouting a lot. Not terribly stirring. It's the same in a lot of games. The Final Fantasy series has some good tracks. Not to mention suspense games like Silent Hill. The kind of twisted, nerve wracking, metal on metal sqealing may not be typically called "music", but that's the role it fills in the game. It sets the mood, it puts you on edge, it makes the game a more "real" experience. They wouldn't make an industry devoted to publishing game soundtracks if all game music, as you say, sucked. Period.

It does suck, I don't give much thought to the industry , it is inferior to my own collection, I'm not a big fan of the "majorities music" music . That's why I mute it and add only the SFX....don't smile at me

First of all, there are some that like background music, and some that don't, so why not just make a choice and keep everyone happy? For those that like the mood and depth, cater their needs. For those that don't, have an option to mute it.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't stealing music from other games copyright infringement? Unless this is just a personal project, I don't think you can do that.
