    • Ship Graphics Needed


      Ok In a plug Im making that fixes some of the more crucial Hypergates that are needed by a series of missions for Sigma, and at the end it adds a new ship, I need somone to make the RleD and Rle8 and the Spin Resources for it.

      I've would like it to look like a Cross between the Abomination and the Fed Patrol Boat e.g. The Abominations body only Thinner and the Engines from the Fed Patrol Boat, with banking, hope that makes sence but if somone could do that it would be Apprichated. Also i'm on Windows so you know.

      Making Nova quality graphics takes a considerable amount of time and if there are two hypergate fix plugs out there already, what incentive do we have to give you time from our personal lives to make a ship for you? I'm not necessarily trying to shoot you down, but I do want you to justify yourself to us(me).

    • I'd suggest looking for free shipyards. I don't know if there are any for nova, but if there are they are probably worth looking into.

I am doing a TC (one that will make a new universe about 4 times size and about 3 times the ships and weapons, outfits etc.) That's a LOT of boom, shan, pict and rleD graphics. anyone want to help? any would be appreciated. I'm a PC user, using EVNEW. help enough and I'll name something good after you.

      Wow... 4 times larger than Nova. 3 times the number of ships.... Too much time required for a project headed by a person who just joined. Please show us that you're serious taking on a project of this magnitude and then ask again. I don't think that you can appreciate the amount time that goes into making a TC. For example, Uncle Twitchy has been working on Starfleet Adventures since 2001 (I think), and has been alpha testing for over a half a year. Are you sure that you want to be working on this project one, two, maybe three years in the future? Graphics take a LONG time to do well and there's no way that a graphics person worth his (or her) salt is going to sign on with no indication that this TC is going to last beyond being just a concept.

      Mid-summer of 2002 -- that's when I started working on the graphics and laying out the original map (in EVO Developer's Map) in anticipation of EVN's release.

    • burned. yes it's true I just joined, but I've been working for 5 days straight now and have the map, governments, planets, descriptions already down. I need the graphics (the long part), and after I receive graphics I would plot the ships, outfits and weapons. Missions aren't done yet, but will be by the end of march, and hopefully by mid-april i'll have everything non-graphics ready to go.

      frankly, I'm not asking for a full time effort. Just if anyone has any graphics lying around, send me them and maybe I'd use one or two, makes my job a little easier. if someone's bored, make me a shan set. It's kinda a faint hope, but I have a september deadline and am working like a banshee, and any graphic help might be nice.

      Omeomi: You will never to work like hell for 365 days to get a plug-in of that size done... Days of Glory is doing it but I've had to outsource to even have a chance for really finishing. A map 4x the size of Nova require the programming of 2000 systems and 1600 planets, along with the associated issues. Placing the system map alone will be 10 hours. Let's say you can name 10 systems and planets a minute, another 6 hours. Programing 3600 resources at around 1 minutes each to do it properly is another 60 hours. For 1600 spobs, you need to do a bar and landing desc for each or so. Estimate 5 minutes to do a decent one. There you have another 140 hours so. For everything else, you'll have around 10000 or so resources and descs to do. Let's say an average of 3 minutes for all of those. That's 500 hours. Then you need to debug everything but let's not calculate that. Combined, programming is at the bare minimum around 720 hours of work. You telling me that you finished all that by mid-April. Doing so would require working 24/7 everyday.

      You think that you've got the desc's down? You wrote 3000+ desc's in 5 days? 600 desc's/day. Or 50 hours of work at least. You expect us to believe that you did 10 hours a day of work on it for 5 days straight? And then managed to find more time to do all 2000 systems.

    • I beg to differ. I believe that such a project can be accomplished within said timeframe, but the result of said project will be so far subpar below conventionally accepted standards of quality that either:

      - Nobody will bother playing,
      - People will play and say 'This sucks!',
      - or people will use the project as an example for a future 'What Not To Do in Plug-in Development Guide'.

All I'm saying is that just coming on the board and saying that he wants someone to make on the order of 90+ ship graphics because his plug is so large that it's super 1337? Forget it! I consider my time very precious and I don't plan on spending such a large portion of my life on a project that's only in its infant stage. Of course, I'm already making an exception to my rule, but the project itself isn't a full TC so the graphics requirements are quite small, and I'm using it as a stepping stone to improve my skills for a project that I am more personally involved with. Sorry guys, you might want to either check out the free shipyards out there, or for omeomi, come back when you have more done.

      I know what you mean. Even for developers, you wouldn't want to sign up for a plug-in that was probably going to end up vaporware. I intended it to be a honest question. I apologize if you felt that it was anything else.

    • StormCrow, your plug has a pretty unoriginal concept. Instead of conveniently activating all hypergates like already existing plugs , you make the player drag-ass all around the galaxy turning them on, which is more of a pain than a bonus.

      You also add one ship, and since you have no concept of the difficulty and skill required in making the graphics you want for it, I can rightfully assume you have no concept of the playability of single-ship plugs. Look at the EVO add-on section: it's overrun with plugs that say "it adds one UBER-AWESOME SHIP OMGLOL IT HAS LIKE 30000 MISSILES!!!!1" Also look at their downloads and ratings: subterranean, if you will. Plugs that add one ship are annoyingly unplayable because:

      A. The plug author usually lacks the brains or the motive to add it into düdes so it actually appears other than the player's ship.

      B. In order to use the ship, the plug must be kept in all the time, which conflicts with other plug-ins the player want want to play.

      C. The ship's graphics are usually poor, and the ship itself either lacks any advantages over the stock ships or is so powerful it's basically a cheat.

      Make it if you must (it will be good practice), but save EVula some time and Ambrosia some server space by not uploading it.

      Oh, c'mon. Give him a chance. StormCrow (and Omeomi), keep expanding your ideas. I for one would prefer a plug where you work for your gains to one where you don't.

      You'll have to run thse through EnRLE or EVNEW to make them work with Nova, but that's a step you'll need to know how to do eventually anyway. Build a plug using these graphics, or with simple ones you do yourself, and then announce it here or on the ev-nova.net forums so it can get a bit of testing before you put it on the add-ons page. After doing this, if you are dissatisfied with your ship graphics you'll probably find it easier to get someone to help you. 🙂

    • Thanks for the support, Dr. Trowel. I am trying hard to find a decent 3d modelling/rendering app that is not uber resource intensive and free (p2p or otherwise), and I guarantee you that once I have the process down I will make good ships. Some of the ships in the shipyards were incredibly impressive and I see I have a lot of work to do, but I will do it. They will be good, I am easily obsessed. (I beat EVN Basic 7 times in a week, doing each mission string once and then the Polaris one again)

      Process:

      1. Find decent 3d modeller/renderer. Must be freeware or otherwise appropriated, must work on PC and be Nova-friendly. Suggestions?
      2. Make sure that, even if free, said modeller/renderer does not require internet access (!#$% Strata 3.0.2!!!!!), as my modelling computer does not have said access.
      3. Make sure that said 3d application will run on my computer. Most will, Maya did not. (pentium 3 450, geforce 2 32 meg, 256 sd ram).
      4. Learn use of said 3d application.
      5. Learn more use of said 3d application.
      8. Learn methods by which I may manufacture ship graphics.
      a) Design ship

      c) render ship
      1. Note that, as i use PC, the methodology behind a Nova-applicable rendering is a mystery to me. As mentioned in 'a little aid?', a little aid on this subject would be appreciated.
      9. Learn how to make ship graphics on a PC that will somehow transform into a Nova-Friendly format (RleD and Pict)
      10.Learn how to insert said graphics into a plugin using EVNEW and a PC (this PC thing is irritating).
      10.Make said graphics (RleD AND pict files, i am not making rle8 files. use 16 bit colour depth please, it is 2004.)
      11.Insert said graphics into plugin.
      12.Repeat steps 10 and 11 for planetary objects (est. 40), outfit pictures (est. 300+), RleD for ships, glow, lights, masks (est. 300-350 each, depending on when I enter the insane asylum), ship picts (info) (haven't decided whether I should go Procyon style and not make them, depends on how much time I have and whether i have gone insane as said above), ship picts (target) (est. 300-350), cicn (may yoink nova basics' cicns), planet landing picts (est 40-50), shot RleDs (est 150), random picts (person pictures, nebulae (maybe), est 10). Total est = 2040-2150 pictures total. AAAHH!!!!!! Suggestions here? Any numbers off?
      13.Cry self to sleep at night.
      14.Insert said graphics into several plugins, along with misn, desc, syst, spob, dude, pers, flet, etc. May rip off nova's status bar.
      15. Release, just in time for EV4.
      16.After hospital recovery, update and port.

      So, if anyone can give me any help on any of these steps, please feel obligated to do so. Any would, quite obviously be appreciated. Also any support or ideas for plug refining would be appreciated.

    • Neon I have already added one Ship to the Game and it is incredibly fair and I have Added it to dude resources it I am not a n00b with ships I make them I dont over power them.

      Thx Dr Towel I've Chosen a Ship from Onyx's Shipyard and now I'm Puzzling Over How to make it look Rle8 like i'm on EVNEW and I honestally dont have a clue. Also because the Ship was made for Override it doesnt have Banking Frames, if I put the RleD Up would somone be able to Add Banking Frames?

      Also in the Shan Resource the Weapon Exit Points are really getting me

      Not to my knowledge. I suppose you could, but it'd be way more difficult than it's worth. The only way you'll get banking frames is if you ask the person who originally rendered the graphics to make banking frames.

    • Hee hee, you should try modding for a game that only has a parser for an SDK sometime. Nothing quite beats a few hundred lines of code to get you up in the morning... 😄

      Honestly, having looked at the system shipmaking shouldn't take that long once you've gotten into it. Um, provided you have preexisting models to work with. EVNEW is a wonderful piece of work, everything's unified and all you really have to do is fill out a few pretty basic fields. The only really time-consuming job is making sure all your values are different from existing EV values, and link together properly.

      Anyway. I might be able to help you with graphics on your job if you're willing to do value-juggling on my next one... It should be fairly simple, but I'd really rather spend my time making models and writing.

      Hmm, that reminds me, I really should upload my tester for beta-ing.
