Help make a perfect EVO > EVN converter!

Hello, all. As many know, I am the author of SpacePort, EVONE's utility to convert EV/EVO plugins to the Nova format. Obviously, the conversions are not absolutely perfect, but if there is enough interest, I plan on changing that, and making the perfect converter.

I propose we find a well-known EVO Total Conversion, preferably with a still-active developer, and make it a project to convert it to Nova. I obviously haven't played every TC, but there are quite a few out there that must have been pretty good, with people that are/were familiar with the intricacies of the game.

After we have used the converter to update the files, all developers will play through the game, and/or hunt through the resources to find any errors in the conversion. As bugs are found, I will update the converter, and release a new version, hopefully fixing the problem.

This will hopefully accomplish two things: First, bring a well-loved TC from the EVO days, and bring it to Nova, and second, make a damn-near perfect converter, so everyone else can convert their favorite TC's themselves. Please comment on this idea, and make suggestions for a legitimate candidate (preferably one with a developer that does not mind if we port it to Nova).

I have no recommendations for TCs to port, as the ones that spring to mind are already ported (but not released), or being ported.

thank you space pirate. the program you suggest is one i have waited a long time for. i assume that it will work for EVC as well? anyways, i suggest frozen heart. that is an excellent TC, in my opinion, with a rad theme song. seriously...have you heard the theme song? its awesome. if nothing else, just do it for the theme song!

For some reason, I don't think Martin Turner would take kindly to someone converting and publishing either one of his TCs to Nova format without his explicit permission (especially because he is working on/has finished a Nova version). The theme music can always be ripped using ResEdit.

Corndog, the application is already done, and is distributed with (url="http://"http://www.ariossoftware.com/")EVONE(/url). However, it is still not perfect, and I propose to change that. It already converts both EV and EVO files to the Nova format.

And while FH would indeed be a perfect TC for this, as Martin Turner still stops by, and could give his input, he is/was doing the conversion himself, and I certainly wouldn't want to steal a project that is already underway.

Kirk, do F25, SW:EVO, or Babylon 5 make extensive use of resources? This really wouldn't be worth doing if the TCs are relatively simplistic.

F-25V2.1 does uses lot of resources in EVO. You need to contact Bomb for the files. And Bomb said no problem in converting the TC into EVN.

I think this project is a great idea!

Babylon 5 uses every EVO resource type except for deqt, nebu, oops, and spit -- I'd say oops is the only major omission. I remember at least a couple of "advanced" features -- one-way hyperlinks and systems that changed in response to mission events. I had fun playing the TC, and it would do if F25 won't work for some reason, but the graphics are wildly uneven in quality. Some are fully rendered, some are rendered once and then spun around without recalculation of shadows, and some are lifted right out of EVO and EVC.

Does F25 count as a "Total Conversion?" Does it matter much if it doesn't? Do you want to consider other large expansion plugs, SpacePirate, or do you feel that only a truly "T" TC will give SpacePort a complete workout?

F25 does count as a Total Conversion, but it requires the EVO Data Files.

how about Relm of Prey, or some of the Empire plugs? They could be addons for the EVC port to nova. I thought that they were pretty cool. Or is this override only?

Well, the EVC conversion is already quite good; it is the EVO that is really the problem. However, if you think we should do both simultaneously, or have that be a project after the EVO is done, I'd certainly consider it.

Dr. Trowel, large expansions would also do quite nicely, as SpacePort will need to be able to convert those as well.

Kauthor, isn't F25 available on Ambrosia's servers? Or is there an update that hasn't been uploaded?

Mostly complete, at least. One prerequisite I'd like to have is that a lot of people be familiar with it.

(of course, if you'd like your TC ported to Nova, the EVONE converter would get it mostly right...)

Martin Turner

To clarify, I've finished the FH conversion to Nova, haven't done much with the FF conversion and am still working on the new game. My aim is to make FH not the way it was but the way you remembered it. This has required all new graphics, as the 8-bit graphics of the EVO days just won't do any more. It's also involved the creation of loads more planets more than Nova has, although less systems.

I'm not too keen on releasing the FH port. I think it would be better for everyone to wait until I've written the new scenario.

What the heck does EVONE stand for. I should know that by now but I always thought it was a windows only editor. The -EVO-part, gives the impresion that this editor can edit EVO stuff too. EVO only works on a mac.

EVONE is a general purpose editor for Mac. It edits Nova, EV, EVO, and Windows Nova plug-ins. Pretty good except the fact that it's not too stable on my computer. Others have had different experiences so it may depend.
