    • What program do you use to make 3D models of ships?

Well, I designed some ships but have no idea how to make graphics and plug-ins and stuff.
Oh, and my sketches are top-down view.

    • I use Blender. But I'm only using it for a coule of days myself, so don't ask me too much about it. I use it meanly cause it's free (you don't actually think I have money do you? I've spent my last little dollars on EVN).

    • Strata 3D 3.02... better than their latest release.

Possibly the best free program out there. I really want the pro version though.

    • Strata 3D... not Strata 3Dpro.

Check out Ewan's lair, he might have 3.02 back up. I'd tell you to check out some of my work in thedecline's "Graphics teaser" topic, but it's just... Well you'll see when you look at the thread...

    • Too bad there's no way that PC users can use Strata 3.0.2...there are several EVN-related websites that host the Preferences and licence files for the Macintosh version, but no such equivalent for Windows.

Yes, I sent an e-mail message to the only PC Strata 3.0.2 Windows user I know of...I also conducted a thorough (but futile) search on the Internet concerning this issue. I suppose my only hope now is to learn how to use Blender ;). (Unless anyone here inexplicibly knows where Windows Strata preferences are stored...)

    • Lightwave 3d and 3d Studio Max are the best programs for creating 3d models however they aren't free (nor are they cheap, I could buy a new computer for the price these things go for!). However, since both are very popular, a sufficient search could provide you with a watered down copy on the net. I think there's a demo version to Lightwave... I know that 3d Studio Max has a free version that's watered down, though if you know where to get a copy of the real deal, don't hesitate.

You want proof of their capabilities? Just look at Space: Above & Beyond, Babylon 5, Star Trek, Star Wars and all those other fancy sci-fi shows... They have each used at least Lightwave or 3d Studio Max, or both. A great accompanying 2d graphics program is Photoshop, though in my view, Paint Shop Pro is almost as good and worth mentioning. You'll need such a program if you intend to do the textures yourself.

Learning to use these however is another question entirely, they are not like Build.exe that came with Duke-3d, you will need to seek out tutorials on the net or from friends who know how to use those programs, or if you want to waste time, try learning everything yourself (though that may take a few years).

All this comes from a Windows user so be assured that everything I said here is based on Windows, the programs each work on Windows 95/98, 2k, Me, NT, XP so there shouldn't be any problems.

heh, right... Star Wars used Lightwave back in the 70's....

But he's right, very high quality graphics have been made in those programs.

If you're just starting I would definetly reccommend a free program to get started. Also, go download Gimp if you don't have a 2D program, it's free, and you're gonna need something to paint textures in.

    • Ah, I remember Mechanisto... haven't used that in ages. 'Twas a fantastic program though. I usually used either that or Infini-D. Depending on what I was going for with the finished product. Well, actually I hardly ever finished anything... or I'd have a good 20-30 TCs out by now. (grins)

    • Ok, ive noticed a lot being said about this but isnt he asking where he can get these programs? I have tried myself but every single one needs a license code. (I thought you said they were free?) Anyway, a link might help him.

    • The free version of 3d studio max is called G-Max and can be downloaded here (url="http://"http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/")http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/(/url)

That's the OFFICIAL site. When you've downloaded and installed the program, you will have to register it (wich is free) and you will get a password... each time you clean out your cookies, you will have to visit the site to "recover" that using the password you received. (Actually, you don't have to, if you don't mind the message of registration incomplete poping up everytime you start up, this does not prevent you from using the program.) You REQUIRE Internet Explorer 5.0 or better for that so make sure you have that first from (url="http://"http://www.microsoft.com")http://www.microsoft.com(/url)

      Hope this helps

    • Bryce 3. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Bryce; it is primarily a landscaping program, but can do Boolean operations and thus is far superior to Mechanisto (which I used to use).

The ability to do booleans doesn't necessarily make it a superior program. In fact, Mechanisto is far superior than Bryce with its modelling tools. Mech's tranformations can give you extreme modelling flexibility.

    • I am gonna try using ProE/Wildfire to model up some ideas, seeing as how it is something I am likely to be using (Mechanical Engineering) and also a pretty full-featured 3D modeling app.

Another app that I have modeled with in the past is Rhinocerous. Sadly, it is no longer available, even though Autodesk uses it to create their logos.

    • Sure, modeling tools such as those in Mechanisto can be useful, but I can do almost any of those functions using Boolean operations. The reverse is not true. I defy you to create a cube with a cylindrical hole without the use of Booleans. Plus, I can easily integrate graphics into landing pictures (I made one landing PICT of a planetary defense gun). Lighting is superior, textures are superior, Boolean operators are a must-have, modeling is limited but can be duplicated. In short, Bryce > Mechanisto.
