    • Mac Emulating

One of the reasons I decided that Escape Velocity: Nova was worth the $30 to register(I havn't bought a new game in a long time, I stick to the ones I know I like) was because of the plug-ins. Many will tell you that the plugs are the best reason to register. Not only is it fun and creative to make your own, but to use other peoples creativity and work to expand your own gameplay. I took out my credit card and signed up, I registered my game and began downloading plug ins. Then I decided it was time to do this stuff on my own. I realize I don't even know where to begin. So I ask on the IRC channel #nova. Turns out us PC users can't. No ResEdit for us. We don't even have resource forks(don't ask me... I havn't the slightest). So I was asking around about a ported version of nova tools when Pikeman suggested (url="http://"http://www.uni-mainz.de/~bauec002/B2Main.html")BasiliskII(/url) A Mac Emulator. I have used various emulators before(nestalgia for my old nintendo) but to emulate another operating system was a new Idea to me. I really wanted to get my $30 worth so I decided to give it a shot. It took a while and quite a bit of fooling around to get it to work but I've done it, I've gotten my emulator to work. It was difficult for me, mostly in finding a good ROM(or figureing out what a ROM was for that matter) and a copy of a Mac OS that worked. Many people gave me a link to (url="http://"http://www.geocities.com/k_semler2002/mac.html")Macintosh Items(/url) and you'll find pleanty of stuff there but a lot of the links were broken and some only worked sometimes.
Whats more is I couldn't for the life of me get the Mac OS 8 to work, I got 7.5.3 but you can't run nova or nova tools on that. Anyway this is getting pretty long and I just want to put together a little guide, and get all the files that worked for me in one place.

Start by getting Basilisk. You will want the x86 one. also, get the manual is you have any questions about basilisk that I can't answer.

Next you will need a ROM image. It is important to know that you need to obtain one of these legally. You need to own the machine you get the image from. That being said there are a number of them available on the net. I have found the best one is the Performa rom.

Now you need OS 8. none of the versions of OS 8 I downloaded worked for me, But I did eventually obtain a copy os it with only the essential files.

Then if you used the essentials OS 8 you will need to upgrade to 8.1 which is easy.

You will need HFV explorer which allows you to create a "volume" for your mac files(this is just a partitioned space that will act like your Mac's hard drive) HFV explorer is also the only way to move files to and from the volume.

Stuffit expander for windows and for mac will aslo be helpful because most of the nova plugs are stuffed with it.

You can use the above links, and/or google to find the files above But I will also be puting all of them together in a .rar archive to share.

    • very impressive. there should be someway to perserve this. oh ya. this should be typed up and submitted to the guides section of the addons page.

Edit: blast, i never remember to welcome newcomers.

      Welcome to the boards.

    • Welcome to the boards.
I have almost identical emu setup. For me, novatools will work, even though in theory it shouldnt, as long as you dont open weap resources (those seem to produce error 7 when opened with the novatools editor, so you have to "open with template" instead.)

Oh, and i am running the quadra 650 rom. Google for it. I found that it was the best that I could find.

    • Now, lets get started. Ill assume you have the files needed allready, If you want my little package I mentioned above email me or talk to me on the IRC channel.

First things first, you'll need a volume.
Open HFV Explorer and go to File > Format New Volume
Don't worry about the word "format" there, you arent going to lose anything.
Ive heard advice on how big to make the volume range from 50-500 MB. It all depends on what you will be doing. I would suggest at least 200. Later you can allways add more volumes. So, name your volume, choose your size and pick a place to save the volume. I would create a BasiliskII folder somewhere and save it there. When you are done you will have a new little hard drive Icon on the left with the title you gave to it. When copying files simply find it by navigating with the area to the left. Pick the folder that contains things to be moved and the files should appear on the right. Drag them over to the left and onto your volume and let go. You should get a window asking you to select copy mode. Make sure it is set to "let the program decide" and hit OK to all. Its important you hit OK to all, for some reason I have problems when I hit plain 'ol OK.

Now unzip Basilisk and copy all the files to the directory where you saved your volume. If you followed my advice its in a folder named "Basilisk II"
While your at it unzip the OS you will be using to that folder too. It will be in the format of an HFV volume just like the one we created.
You will also need your ROM image in the folder.
Lastly you will need to move the proper CD-rom drivers to the correct location. Move them to: "C:WindowsSystem 32Drivers".

Now use HFV Explorer to move the files you want to use while emulating. (stuffit expander, res edit, nova tools, EV: Nova, IE or Netscape, Drop-it are some of the ones I use.) Also bring over the 8.0->8.1 updater I told you about.

Ok we have everything where it needs to be, time to set up Basilisk. To do this, Run the Basilisk GUI found in that BasiliskII folder you should have moved all your files to.
The important things with the GUI are as follows:
      1. In the general tab make sure that CPU: is set for 68040, FPU emulation is turned off, Model ID is number 24(you may have to use number 7 untill you get 8.1 working properly then change it.) and boot drive and boot driver should both be set to 0.

2.In the memory tab you should have enough RAM set aside to do what you want to do but DO NOT exceed the ammount of RAM you actually have. If you don't know how much you have go for 64, that's probably a good guess. Now you will also need to find that ROM image you got. I suggested the performa ROM which I suggested you put right into your basilisk II folder. It shouldn't be too difficult. If I havn't lost you so far you should be capable of doing this.

      3. The Screen tab is pretty simple, choose window or full screen, your resolution and leave everything else unless you know what your doing.

      4. The Disk tab is important yet simple. Under available disks you should see your volume, the OS 8 file, and you may see your ROM image. Simply double click the volume we created, and the OS 8 file and they should mopve over to the left(later if you want more space, use HFV Explorer to make another volume and use this area to add it.)

Allright now we should be ready to hit the Run button(or the f1 key) and try out your new mac. If all went well you should start to boot OS 8 from the OS 8 file we added in step 4. If all didn't go well carefully review the stepps above and try again. If problem persists you may email me or feel free to post questions here.

Once you've booted up(the first time you may get some pesky pop-ups don't agree to anything you don't understand) you should see two hard drives. One would be our volume we made, and the other should be OS 8. First things first, copy all the files in the OS 8 drive over to out volume, then run the 8.1 updater. Now shut down the emulator (special > shut down from the finder) and go back to the Basilisk GUI. Go to the disks tab and double click on the OS 8 file we copied everything from. We dont need it any more. It should move back over to the right. If you had to in the general tab set the number 7 now would be the time to set it to 24. Now run your emulator again and you should boot up OS 8.1 from your volume. Your in the gome strach now. Install stuffit expander and expand all the files we moved over with HFV Explorer. Begin installing everything you want. Thats it, you now have a working mac to make all the plugs your heart desires.

I hope this helps you, and I hope PC users can now share their work and we can have more ways to expand an allready great game.

    • were you thinking someone would set the guide for you? well, maybe i could, no. i don't have any universal text programs that would work for both mac, and windows. but it is a really good guide. very informative, and extremly descripted.

    • No, ill do it. Im just puting it here and geting some feedback. People may have common problems. If you do please post them and how you solved them here. If you havn't solved them you'll find help here. When I think we have a comprehensive guide that should help pretty much everyone ill put it all together, give credits to all the people who helped and submit it to the guides section.

It doesnt need to work for mac, mac users don't need to emulate OS 8.

(EDIT:) I have made the package with all the needed files. It includes: OS 8 essentials, 8.0 - 8.1 Update, HFV Explorer, Performa ROM, and Basilisk II for x86 as well as a manual in .pdf format(It's not by me). Im going to set up an FTP server for a few days so people can download it. Im also looking for someone to hold it on an FTP somewhere with their files because I don't have a dedicated server and im not leaving my computer on all the time. The pack is 31 MB archived in .RAR format.

i'd be more then glad to host it. i don't have a site, but i do have the shell for holding files. thats why, if you try to get to my site trhough the links on my sig, you can't. 🙂

let me know if you want to to host it. i use Angelfire.com great host.

    • No I cant. I had posted the search terms in another thread. But the post got deleted by a mod because "its illegal to download roms" Personally, i think Ambrosia should mind its own copyrights and let apple decide wheather it cares about the roms (which by all indicateions, it doesnt).
If you come on AIM (ive added what your info says is your SN), or email me (Azratax on AIM, azratax@aznt.com, AIM vastly prefered) we can discuss this.
      -Az

And I am to be called Azratax, not Azratax2. The fact that I do not know my 2 year old password is no reason to be persecuted by others by thier appending a "2" to my name. Call me Azratax2 again, and you'll be breathing vaccume with the rest of your crew. 🙂
(jokeing here, atleast about shooting you outta space)

then perhaps i too should not allow the uploading of ROMs to my little web shell. i'll still host anything else you want, as long as its not illegal, like ROMs.

    • im setting up my own FTP server that will host the pack for now, just have to fart around with my firewall settings tomarow and open a port for ups and downs then people can access it. right now its set up locally with an account for up to 3 guests at a time.

      ------------------

    • umm isnt a lot of that stuff illegal? Like having the full installation of OS 8?

    • no, the only thing there that is illegal to have is the ROM image unless you extracted it from a machine you own. The OS 8 is freely distributed on apple.com somewhere.

      ------------------

    • The OS8 and the Volume are not appearing. Why?

    • they have to be in the exact same folder as basilisk II.exe is in.
If they aren't in that folder but you know where they are, click browse and you'll get a window you can use to find it. If you've been using windows for long you can probably figure this out. When you do find the volume, double click it and it should appear. As for OS 8 do the same thing but you may have to unzip it first.

    • I wrote up a howto on how to set up this stuff a while ago... (url="http://"http://tresgeek.net/~mrflippy/ev/win-plug-howto.html")http://tresgeek.net/...plug-howto.html(/url)

I haven't used OS 8 -- 7.5.3 has worked fine for me, but I'm not running Nova. NovaTools do in fact work under 7.5.3, except the weap part of it keeps crashing ResEdit. Everything else works great.
