    • Mapping Out the Map


      My first topic on he Dev Board.

      How do you all go about mapping out your systems for your plugs? I was not sufficiently satisfied with EVONE to purchase it, especially with Cartographer coming out in the (hopefully) near future. Yet, I am at in impasse in my development, and I really need to get the galaxy done so I can start assigning govs to systems and placing spobs so I can program the missions. So how did everyone go about this in the past, without graphical editors?

      Sub-question: Any word on how soon Cartographer will be out?

    • The only way i can think of is to make a map in some other program, calculate the co-ordinates of the systems, and use Nova Tools to put it in. It is slow and takes a while, but it is the only way, short of EVONE.

      Oddly, I have the coordinates entered, but I don't want to open all 97 syst resources to jot it down. You see, I don't know which systems are close to eachother. :frown: I guess what I really want to know is when Cartogrpher will be released.

    • Do a search for ThorPrime's old program NovaBurst. It's a free graphical editor for systems, so you don't have to worry about EVONE.

      For now, I use Pontus' EVO Developer's Map. Of course, I'm still in the planning stages, and anxiously awaiting Cartographer's release, as well as EVONE's next version. Pontus' app will get the job done graphically, but you'll need to do a wonk or two of work to get the systems up to Nova standards.

      I've read the Bible a few times and have a knack for conceptual problems, so I can usually come up with an answer off the top of my head fairly quick, hence the lack of topics nad plethora of advice to others. Problem is with patience, I can't do mind-numbingly dull things for too long or I lose interest and I've put too much effort into this plug so far to stop before release, hence the request for help with a less dull solution. 😄 Thanks for the compliment though.

    • having never done anything for EVC or EVO i don't have Developers map or anything like that so I used an ancient and incredibly buggy alternitve. I used Ev-Edit. I know it is REALLY buggy and mysteriously adds spobs in random systems, but it did it's job and marked the cooardinates for the systems. I then copied them straight from that file into mine using res-edit and VĂ­ola! Systems placed and named (except for uninhabitated systems in the unexplored Regions). i then went throug hand added 'Novaization' to all the systems and the spobs. Time consuming no doubt, but not as much as it might have been. Still when they're all done I will be delerious with joy having made the biggest most difficult part of my plugin. Doing 493 missions will be a breeze compared to doing 993 systems not including replacement ones :eek:

    • Here's where to download EVO Developer's Map.

      I had the unique situation of a book being published with my maps in it -- I scanned them in, imported them into Illustrator, plotted out each system to determine their coordinates (and their proximity) and then imported all that information into EVO Developer's Map...that is, until I hit the s˙st max limit for EVO. Then I used ConText and ReStore to convert the EVO version into a spreadsheet, used the coordinates to remap the s˙sts into EVN files, and used EVONE and the beta test of Cartographer to finish up.

      When I get 'round to doing a TC set in an original universe, rather that this (un)licensed TC, I'll probably use a very similar method.

      No, I'm not going to say anything about how Cartographer compares to EVONE or to EVO Developer's Map -- but I will say that I prefer EVO Developer's Map to EVONE because of it's ease and intuitiveness.

      It must still be rather time consuming to edit them all after using Ev-Edit. It would probably be best to use EVONE. It is a bit buggy, but very soon they should have everything worked out. I imagine that in the near future it will turn into an editor, for Nova, that compares to the old EV-Edit.

      It is. But I don't like EVONE. For some reason I don't like the interface PLUS it doesn't have a spob editor yet so I'll reserve my final decision for when it is complete. Then and ONLY then will I send in my $10. Depending on how good it is I might just use Mission Computer as so far it is a great editor but it doesn't have a graphical interface maker though that's on the way I hear.

      I perfectly understand the complaint that it doesn't have a spob editor and that is being worked on. For the interface however, please post on my forums ( (url="http://"http://forums.ariossoftware.com")http://forums.ariossoftware.com(/url) ) or email me directly. I will try to address any complaints you have. The interface is one of EVONE's best features - it is amazingly flexible - so if anyone doesn't like it, something needs to be changed.

    • I actually find the interface rather nice. Very Aqua. My one suggestion is that instead of a 30 day demo period, maybe it could be 30 uses? I have had it for a while, but haven't used it much, and now the demo period is over...

    • Good suggestion. I will consider it. My one hesitation is that someone could just keep it open, but I guess even in OS X they would have to quit it once in a while.

    • True, the only problem is that when you go away for a week or two, you get back and your demo periods over. 😄

    • Basically the same happened to me. I read "public beta" so I didn't expect any limitations of this kind (or maybe I just didn't pay enough attention), and once I installed it it was too late of course. Since I'm planning a TC that will involve a pretty huge galaxy (I'm not saying it will ever get finished, but it'll be fun to work on anyway 🙂 ), I was really interested in giving EVONE a try, but now real life has decided it wasn't meant to be. Pity, really, because the little bit of work I've done with it convinced me that it has great potential.

      I really hate this kind of time-limited demos - only the save-disabled ones are even more sadistic. It's one of the reasons why I've occasionally downloaded a pirated (PC) version of something to try it out, rather than a demo. So far I've always ended up buying a legal copy if I decided to keep using something - it's not that I don't want to pay for good software, I just want to test it on my terms. Yes, I know I'm stubborn and egoďstic 😛

      I like AndCarne's suggestion. My own would have been to make the next beta fully functional, without time limit, but allow only a fixed number of each resource per project (like maximum 8 s˙sts and spöbs, and 3 shďps, etc. - the number is up to you of course), but I guess that may be a little too easy to work around...
