    • [ANN] Introducing MissionComputer for EV Nova

I've just posted a new version of my ever-expanding scenario editor, MissionComputer, which for the first time now supports EV Nova in all of its editors (while retaining support for Escape Velocity and EV Override), and adds several new ones. MissionComputer still does not completely replace the traditional tools such as ResEdit with NovaTools, but complements them with an easier way to edit a number of resource types.

MissionComputer 2 adds crön, PICT, STR, and STR# to the list of supported resource types, which includes the dësc, düde, flët, gövt, jünk, mïsn, përs, and yëä® resources. It provides a simple interface for selecting the resource IDs needed when referring to one resource from another, and offers excerpts from the official Resource Bible in a convenient help system and right within some parts of the interface. MissionComputer 2 also includes a new Resource Copier utility for moving large numbers of resources between files, integrates my previously available EV Nova Target Generator application, and improves the application's overall resource management abilities.

The original version of MissionComputer was first released on 22 December 2001 after several months of development and testing. It is available in both a Carbon edition designed for Mac OS X - including Jaguar - and a Classic edition which runs on Mac OS 9 and below on both PowerPC- and 68000 series-based Macintoshes. It supports both the Escape Velocity 1.0.5, EV Override 1.0.2, and EV Nova 1.0.3 file formats.

MissionComputer 2 is immediately available from my web site at (url="http://"http://davidarthur.evula.net/")davidarthur.evula.net(/url), and, like all previous versions, is a free download.

    • The program crashes with an error of type 3 while trying to draw the second window to the screen (after selecting the source data files). I am running it on a beige G3 with os 8.1 installed. On the same machine, but under os 9, the program functioned normally. The bug appeared when selecting the normal Nova data files as the source, selecting the Polycon files as the source, and selecting nothing as the source.

While I've developed MissionComputer to support a wide range of configurations, my ability to test it on older operating systems is rather limited. I think I may have an idea, though; apart from the operating system difference, were you by any chance running different versions of QuickTime in the two configurations?

Well, those should both be sufficient...

What happens if you copy over the MissionComputer preferences folder from the 9 installation to the 8.1 installation? Does that make a difference?

    • I tried copying the Missioncomputer prefrences folder over from the OS 9 installation to the OS 8 one, and it did not have any effect.

    • David -

Two reactions to the Type 3 error:

      1. If you compiled MC for Carbon, you need to have CarbonLib, OS9 or OSX. CarbonLib comes with OS9.

      2. The HIToolbox is 8.5 and greater only, I believe. If RB uses the HIToolbox for Carbon apps, you may be restricted to 8.5 and up.

I'll do more research and write back later.

      Cheers!

    • Well it's probably not the HIToolbox....

The other thing is that usually Carbon apps quit with a "CarbonLib not found" error if you try to run them without CarbonLib. I tried to run a few Carbon apps on one of my 8.1 computers without CarbonLib and that's the result I got each time.

Could be something to do with Appearance Manager - it had major changes since 8.5.

Sorry not to be much help!

      Cheers!

Hmm, that's a good point. Anubis, were you by any chance using the Carbon version of MissionComputer?

I'm not sure exactly what version of the Appearance Manager it supports these days. I know it can run on System 7, without the Appearance Manager installed, but I don't know whether it can run on early versions of the Appearance Manager. (I don't have any pre-9 systems, so I have to rely on what other people can get it working on to know what early systems it supports.)
