Hi! I'm starting a (NOVA) plug based around a group of weak telepaths who fled Federation enslavement after the Vell-os war. They are not Vell-os themselves. They settled in the north of Fed space in what is currently Wraith country. The current names (which I have come up with) are "the Hegemony of Aurelia/Afron". Please submit any name that comes to mind. The winner will get recognition in the ReadMe as well as an ATMOS-class përs in the plug.

Thank you, General, both for the names and for your polite and just chastisement of Fenton.

I like the Raellbak Alliance, but I would think that a group fleeing from slavery at the hands of the Federation would stay away from naming themselves anything that had to do with the Federation (Federated, Democratic etc.). Also, I don't know if they're democratic. I'm leaning towards Republic or possibly a benevolent dictatorship.

the Federation CLAIMS to be a democracy, but is actually run by the Bureau. I see your point, though. At any rate, just beacuse we are rarely (look at Singapore) capable of benevolent dictatorship doesn't mean that a group of low-level telepaths can't decide on one person to be a good dictator. The Romans had benevolent dictators (for short periods of time), why can't the (name hasn't been decided)s?

However, government is not the topic of this forum. Again, I thank you for your contirbutions.

Thank you, mrxak and Mazca. It frustrates me to no end when people feel like validating their existence through meaningless confrontation. However, to return to the subject:

I like "The Free". It has a short, crisp sound. Maybe in the languge of the (name not chosen yet), their name simply means "The Free", but by itself it is too plain for Nova. Excellent idea, however.

Feel free to post here, but know that I also have a string in the NOVA board under the same name which has been much more successful(sp?). I have also made note and comments on that board that further detail the people in question.

"Hegemony" (a Leadership; preponderance of one state among others); is that the form of government that would be created by an oppressed (telepathic) people fleeing a massive State? What about a Meritocracy, or an Autarky (national self-sufficiency), or a Doulacracy (government by slaves), or the old Athenian standby, a Timocracy (the ideal state, ruled by a love of honor)?

I do like some of the suggestions you were getting on the lines of "The Free"; snappy, no polysyllabic alien names to memorize, but a biting description of who they are and what the stand for. "The Only Free," "The Truly Free," ad nas.

Unless they are still trying to hide their origins and nature. In which case, why not pretend they are a corporation? "Ah, this is just the factories and worker's housing for Dekucorp, a publicly-traded corporation registed in The Netherlands..."

I address the concern you bring up with regards to the use of "Hegemony" in the parallel thread on the Nova board. To summerize: They started on one planet with an Athenian Democracy. They grew prosperous. They split into political parties and then had a civil war. The war was ended by mutual non-aggretion(sp?) agreement. Some time later, a powerful, charismatic leader unified them all again and now sits as dictator (but he's a good dictator).

I am leaning towards "The Free", but I will restate that it is too bland for Nova (i.e. too english). If someone can come up with a word that has the same feeling conveyed by "The Free" I will declare him/her/it winner on the spot.

How about simply "Lívra"? This is actually a variation on a Portuguese word meaning something similar to "The Free" in case your wondering what it has to do with anything. :).

edit: in case the word looks like a random jumble of letters as it seems to here at my end, it is "livra" with an accent on the i and pronounced "lEEvra"

Something tells me you've read Orson Scott-Card as well -- thinking of the "Ender" books, of course, with the charismatic and more-or-less benovolent personnage of "The Hegemon."

My board name comes from an unsold novel. I originally named the character "Ame" Arashi but that's just a little much...
