I'd like to know which browser you guys do most of your browsing in.

Specifically, whether anyone is still using Netscape 4.x. I'm very close to getting the HTML version of the Annotated Bible done, and I wanted to find out whether I need to go to the trouble of trying to make the pages look nice in 4.x. If people are still using it, I'll be willing to do it, but I'd much rather simply use standard HTML and CSS rather than the numerous hacks I'd have to do to make it look nice in that browser.

Note: The pages will still work, in the sense of you can go into them and read the pages, just fine in Netscape 4.x. As they are now, though, they don't have any of the styling which appears in more up-to-date browsers, due to Netscape 4.x's annoying bugs.

I'm using Netscape 4 here in Linux, but on my Mac I use iCab.

I guess this means I dont care about NS4, you could try to make it look good in Konqueror =P

I'm using NS 4.7. I recently went back to it after a lengthy and frustrating run with 6.0 - it crashed every time I tried to access the bookmarks menu about half the time I would launch the browser, open a new window, etc., etc.

For a few dark moments, I even considered defecting to the Microsoft product...

FYI, 6.2 is greatly improved over 6.0.

As for browsers, I use Netscape 4.75 both here and at work. What can I say, I'm a stickler for browsers that make developers stick to standard conventions.

Ever seen a table without an ending TD, TR, or TABLE tag in IE? You probably have, bud didn't know it. In NS, a table just doesn't show up if it is missing something. NS is better for people who want to make sure that their code is correct.

Netscape 4.75 is what I use. Even running it through Classic in OS X I find it to be faster than IE, which is rather sad when you think about it.

Actually, the ending tags for <td> and <tr> are optional in HTML. While NS 4.x may be somewhat less tolerant of certain types of errors, it certainly has its share of bugs, to the point where using modern code with it is almost impossible. You practically have to write two pages: one for NS 4.x and one for everything else. 4.x still doesn't reliably implement 5 year-old standards, and it's really frustrating to web developers to still have to support it.

Now, if you want standards compliance, Mozilla or Netscape 6.2 is the way to go.

sigh I guess I'll have to start using various hacks and workarounds for Netscape 4. I was hoping that maybe everyone here would have gotten with the program and stopped using that ancient POS by now, but I guess it's a comment on the state of other browsers that people are still using it.

iCab primarily. Netscape when I need to enter secure sites. I'll ditch it once iCab got that nailed down.

OS X - OmniWeb. I would use Lynx on OS X, also, but I can't seem to install it. And I'd only keep on using OmniWeb for looking at graphics.

Other Unix: Lynx.

MacOS: iCab, although I never boot into OS 9 anymore.

I go with IE5 on OS 9.2. Assuming I'll eventually upgrade to OS X, I'll probably still keep the hell away from Netscape.

Depends. My Quadra has Navigator 3 and iCab installed, but I generally use Navigator. My iMac has both IE 4 and navigator 4, I use Navigator except when I Find a site that it can't load I try IE. A G3 at the office that I use sometimes has IE 5 and Navigator 4, I use IE mostly.

I use Omniweb for 80% of my browsing, 'cause it's sooo pretty (4.1 SP7 these days, since they finally patched the memory leaks).

For the 19% of the internet that Omniweb chokes on, I use IE 5.1.3.

For the 1% of the internet that IE chokes on, I use Mozilla 0.9.5.

I havn't touched the NS 4 series in over a year. Just be careful around OmniWeb, since it has a lot of penetration in the OS X community and really piss poor CSS support.

Primarily OmniWeb, though I wish it didn't crash so often. Since I'm using the 4.1 beta ("sneaky peek"), presumably that will go away with the final version.

I do still use Netscape 4.7 on the rare occasions when I'm in OS 9, or for the pages that none of the OS X browsers can handle.

Thats pretty funny, as I've got more tricks to get stuff to look correctly in IE than in NS. When you're trying to make an all-browsers friendly site, Netscape is the main browser to test in, since it best represents the bottom of the browser food chain.

Just my opinion, though.

Personally, I try and make pages that look good in graphical browsers as well as text based ones.

If I go to a site that I have to turn Java, JavaScript, CSS, or Cookies on for, I tend to leave faster.

And when I went to school, it was uphill both ways.
