    • Grave yard for plugs

Some one should create a web site for abandoned plugs. There are enough plugs out there that have been left to rot to make the plugs that have been released look measly. It would be great if these gems were made public or at leaste given to one specific developer to finnish. I still have old beta copies of New Republic that are pretty much complete in all the data but are merely buggy as hell. And of course there is the now defunct Delta V plug.

    • that'd be nice. i've got quite a few plugs which'll probably never be finished (you know the way it goes: you get a cool idea for another plug and start making it, then get another great but completely incompatible idea and end up with many more plugs in development than any one person could finish in finite time), and i'd be willing to post several of them as starting points for other developers. i'd offer to set up a site for that, but i won't have the time to do it until the semester's over and someone else could definitely get a decent dead plug post up long before then

    • This is a rather good idea, as long as the people who start said plugs have at least decent documentation of what they've done and where they were going so that a new developer can pick it up wthout having to poke around through resedit to even get back to a starting point. A half developed plug without something to give a idea of what is happening, you'd have to take a long time to work out what is happening with everything.

    • If it's any interest, I'm starting up one of my long-scrapped plugs again for Ares this time (Ares has more potential than EVO). Something to do while I work on StarLance.

    • Documentation is good but even if somebody has to copy and paste all the graphics and text then at leaste that stuff will be available. People who post dead plugs can place limitations on there work if they want but I think that many plugs that are posted might end up being picked apart for graphics (not a bad thing). Thank Chrestomanci, I do what I can.

Yes, but they could send it to us as soon as they figure out they're not going to finish it and stop calling me John.

      Why? 🙂

I think there should be a open period of about a month where anyone who want's to develop the plug presents there case to the board members. If the board members think that that person is good enough to finish the plug, they get to download it. That way, you wouldn't have thirty or so newbies developing one plug without knowing someone else is.

    • I'd like to see such a feature on EV-Dev.net

Prehaps I'll tackle the Delta-V plug after 1kw is done 🙂

I have several unifnished ones, mostly for ev. I wrote them in April and they never got released. First there's Cobalt Project, which is now dead becasuse of lack of graphics. Then there's Water Wars, which continues the Lethean/Cydonian string in which the characters were all named after beers :). I ditched that becasue everyone said that there already were enough plugs like that.

Great War is going along slowly, but it has not been abbandoned. I've mapped out the missions. I just havn't finished them (excpet for the basic ones).

personally, i'm greatly opposed to any ruling committee for any aspect of plugs, and this is no exception. if a developer only wants specifically qualified people finishing his/her plug, he/she can just keep the plug and email it to the chosen ones; if the plug's being posted it's stupid to tell people they can't download it. besides, nobody here knows anyone else well enough to judge what they can or cannot do; i know i'm not fit to say whether any one person on this board is good enough to make a specific plug or not. i propose a simple site available to the general public with several dead plugs for free download. and if some plug gets finished 50 different ways, who cares? i'd rather see 50 crappy plugs pouring into the system than seeing a plug developers' guild which rules over all the potential and current developers with an iron fist

    • Cool. However, realistically, i still have some of the old EV plugs and the only reason i don't use them (besides the fact i moved on the EVO) is the graphics and storyline of the plug were quite frankly ****. I think the reason someone hasn't done this before is that the only good plugs that aren't great are in short supply. As for the thought of dissecting for graphics, soon enough you would have a set of sets floating around that will only be new to us for as long as the new EVO stuff was.

Good basis, but i still say let dead plugs say dead.

Mostly I agree with what you said, I also agree that the plugs should contain (if possible) some documentation about the plot and other notes about the plug

    • I think this is a relatively good idea, with a few hitches. I like the idea of people picking up where others left off on dead plugs, but one thing that must be certain is whether or not the origional creator actually wants their plug to be finished by someone else. I have a few dead ones lying around here and there, and I would find it interesting to see where someone else takes them, but other developers can be really protective about their work.
The next thing is that there would definitely have to be notes passed between the people. Most dead plugs have been dead for years, and, at least with my deadies, I can't even remember where I was going or what I was doing with them. On the other hand, there are many plugs in the process of dying, and those people would have to officially close their phase of the project with these notes. It'd be like signing a death warrant on your nest egg.
As for who gets to work on what, I agree with nighthawk in that anyone who wants to work on it can work on it. There's no need for a board deciding on potential. I don't think they'd exactly "rule with an iron fist", but doing things by committee usually means doing the the ineffectual way.
Lastly, since Walter is right about there being a huge number of discontinued plugs, whoever is planning on hosting this sight better be planning to have a lot of dedicated bandwidth for it.

    • If we have it on our Community site, we'd have to get an account with unlimited bandwith; we're going to have A LOT of downloads.

    • Yes' this would be a problem, I'm sure there's a couple of places that offer unlimited bandwidth but space is another issue, how will we get enough space for the larger plugs? Anyway, we can cross that hurdle when we come to it.

Origional? Hah! That idea recirculates itself around the community every year or so. The last time it was brought up the old e-v.com was still up and someone actually did set up a site... ended up failing miserably.

This can't just be an "addition" to any web page. If someone were to actually do this, you'd need to devote a lot of time to maintaing it. It'd be best as a site entirely in itself, not just a particular section of a community website (which, btw, is there ANY progress on that yet?)

And finaly, you'd need a lot of space, simple freeservers just wont hack it.
