    • Galaxy's Edge Plugin

      Calling General Cade Smart...

General Cade, I know you played this plug awhile back. How far did you get?

I am on the mission "Fly through Wormhole". The desc says to go to Sol Alpha and fly through wormhole. There isn't a wormhole near Sol Alpha. I have flown all around the Mercury Belt looking for the darn thing. According to my limited understanding of ResEdit, the wormhole is supposed to be in Sol Alpha system. Do you remember if it is at the outer edges of the map? This plugin could be alot of fun, but there are sooooo many uninhabited systems, it is quite time consuming to find ships and planets, etc.

      Thanks,
      wondergirl

    • I hope you havent given up yet, wondergirl! You had to wait 6 days because I have been doing other stuff and because I was confused by 2 version of Fly Trough Wormhole and 3 versions of Wormhole. I have finally figured it out! Its xPos is 900 and yPos is 750. This means that it is at the very edge of the system, just fly out very far. So its not on the edges of the map, system more like... πŸ˜› Isnt ResEdit wonderful? πŸ˜‰ I got this from it, even if havent played far enough because I am stuck on the Galaxy string.

    • General Cade,

Thanks for responding! I am on the Starlight string, mission #28, Fly Through Wormole.

I flew all around the system, to the very edges and still can't find the wormhole! I am in the same system as the Sun and Sol Alpha Station. According to the mission, the wormhole is supposed to be there. When I hit the 1-3 numbers to navigate to find the wormhole, there is no number 3. Only 1 & 2, navigates to Sun and Sol Alpha.

I spent all last week digging through the data with ResEdit. I think there is something wrong with the Visbits. I now know the VisBit is the mission bit that controls the system's visibility.

The system for Sol Alpha without the wormhole is 426.
The VisBit for that system is 1198.

Then the same system with the wormhole is supposed to change to 457.
The VisBit for that system is 205.

Shouldn't the VisBits be numerically connected? ie: 1198 and then 198?

How do I use ResEdit to find the ACTUAL VisBits?
When actually is the bit set to change the system: at the completion of the last mission, or the acceptance of my current mission?

Am I even on track? Is there some other place to look? I appreciate your help.

I found a few things about this plug:

Sometimes missions fail because the Fail If Scanned is set, yet the mission desc doesn't tell you, and there is no string telling you the mission failed, you just get no response when landing at destination.

Red arrows are few and far between.

If you need to disable a ship, only use one flux generator (or Galaxy equivalent), and disable down to 15% armor, then stop! More than one flux generator destroys the ship.

On the Satrlight mission "Take Back Hawking and Hyde" the desc's are from EVO, not Galaxy's Edge. You actually have to go to ResEdit to figure that mission out.

    • Uh... I dont know. I have never been good with VisBits. Ask this on the EV Dev Corner, some of them are real gurus at making plugs. The only thing I got from the EVO Bible was :(:

The next field controls how and when to make the system visible or invisble. You can pull off some cool tricks with this field, including presenting the illusion that system has changed in some way by hiding the original system and replacing it with a copy that is identical except for the desired changes.

VisBit Which mission bit controls the systems visibility
-1 Ignored (system is always visible)
0-511 Make the system visible only when this mission bit is set
1000-1511 Make the system visible only when this mission bit is cleared

So perhaps you would need to check if a earlier mission you have done sets bit 205. There was a mention on the Dev Corner that there was a program like that, but I dont remember its name. PlugChecker16 does anyway (the only one I found from Add-ons). It checks many of the most common errors people make in writing plugs, too.

    • Thanks for all your help, General Cade Smart. I'll try downloading Plugchecker, maybe that will help me. At least I can do some digging and find out if a previous mission set bit 205. Then I'll head over to the dev boards. If you ever finish this plug, please post it. Thanks, again!

Wondergirl, you have been mysteriously silent for soon 2 weeks. Have you downloaded Plugchecker and checked Galaxy's Edge with it? You havent posted on the devo board either...

    • General Cade,

No I haven't had time to DL Plugchecker. I got a huge design job and have been busy with deadlines.

Also, I started playing FOTVE and sort of forgot about Galaxy's edge. I will finish GE, but not until I have time to devote to ResEdit and other helps (it takes me some time to navigate around ResEdit because I am still a newbie at it).

I did spend some time reading the posts from the Dev Boards, and I was not encouraged by the info about VisBits. Seems they can be a bit of a trick if they get messed up. 😞

I will post here and keep you up to date with my findings.

    • Ok. Where is PlugChecker 16? I can't find it. Is it in EV, EVO or EVN addons? I only looked in the Utility section of the addons pages. It is a cheat or actual plug? Please help. Thanks.

Organize by name and look at the second page and you shall find! http://www.ambrosiasw.com/cgi-bin/vftp/dl-...cker116.sit.hqx Why would it be a cheat? From the quick searching I had, it only scans for errors. It doesnt contain anything cheaty. And no, it is not a plug. It is a actual program. Checking for errors in a plug would be hard with a plug, no?

    • Ack!! I've had my coffee...I took my vitamins...I had eight hours of sleep last night. I am even wearing my glasses. I cannot find it. I clicked on your link and it took me to a Microsoft website.

So I did a PlugChecker116 search on all ASW forums and only came up with text in posts, no actual site (and any links took me back to the Microsoft page).

You said "Organize by name". Organize "what" by name? Is it in the Addons Page? Or an actual ASW Board?

I tried for almost an hour this morning. I don't mean to be a pest, General Cade, but my searches come up empty.

      Thanks,

Step 1. Utilities section in EV Add-ons.
      Step 2. Organize by name.
      Step 3. Find second page.
Step 4. PlugChecker at almost top of web page.

What is the adress of the Microsoft site youre taken to? What does it say? This is MIGHTY odd. I verified the working of the link by clicking it myself in in both IE 6 and Mozilla/ Firefox 1.0 Preview Release. It brought me the standard download dialog. Is it a MSN Search page that says the page couldnt be found?

    • The links I tried were from older posts in the Dev Corner, and I can not remember what the Microsoft site said. Not MSN. I didn't write it down.

Now when I click on your link, I get the same DL dialogue, but it takes me to a blank page. I do get a stuffed PlugChecker file icon on my desktop. Yet, when I click on my desktop the file goes away.

So I went to the EV addons, (my previous searches were only EVO) and I can click on the Get IT, but it doesn't DL the PlugChecker116 file. It's like the original is not there. Spooky. Full-moonish.

General Cade, I really appreciate all your help. I might do some more digging in the Dev Corner, I think I read something yesterday about a Utility that might help.

The part in bold is most odd. It it wasnt a MSN site, what could it have been then? The Internet Explorer downloads site which I (rarely) get when I start Internet Explorer? Blank page? Is it really devoid of any characters? If you get the download dialog with the options to save etc. you should NOT be taken to a blank page. You should be able to click save, save, and get a downloaded file just fine.

The file goes away when you click on your desktop? It didnt happen for me, on Windows XP. Perhaps the file didnt get completely downloaded... or there is something very wrong with your system.

Perhaps you use a odd browser. Firefox 1.0 PR opens a new window with garbage and a note about BinHex 4.0. Internet Explorer 6 saves the file just fine- both from the link and Add-ons.

You can also download from the Add-ons by just clicking on the name, I always do that. Try that.

Thanks for telling that you really appreciate my help! It makes feel good, and makes me feel helping is even more worthwile.
Tell you what: if you cant the get the file downloaded, I E-Mail it to you, since it isnt too large. What is your E-Mail adress?

      Honorable Helpful General Rebel,

Sorry, the Microsoft page came up when I clicked on an old link I found on the Dev Board.

I use Firefox 1.0 -Mozilla. When I click on your link, it takes me to a blank (yep) Mozilla page, but I got the dialogue box to DL. Clicked "Save To Disk" and a stuffed icon shows up on my desktop, but when I actually click on my desktop, the icon disappears. Poof.

There is nothing wrong with my system, I run Norton, et al, like a fanatic.

And I did try to download from the Addons Page, but like I said, there isn't an actual file on the Addons page. When I clicked on Get It, nothing happens. I have DL'd lots of plugs and never have had that happen. Like I said, spoooooky. There IS a full moon now, you know.

I never cry uncle... I plan on finishing Galaxy's Edge, if it takes me a whole year. Please send me a copy of your file. I would be eternally grateful.

Before ill send you it, try one last thing. Try downloading the file in Internet Explorer. It comes preinstalled with ALL Windows computers; XP has version 6. It came preinstalled with Macs for some time too. As I said, it downloaded it OK both ways- both link and Add-ons. Funny how you switched the order of the words in my title. πŸ™‚ Thanks for saying helpful. I like it, though I know I am helpful...

P.S. You wrote Jill at the bottom instead of wondergirl. So that is your real name!

Well, yippee skippee. Using Explorer worked! I bow to the master. About your title, when I'm in a hurry I don't always proof what I type. About my name, drat and double drat. Now my top secret, super hero identity is known. Maybe I should buy myself a new one....

    • Youre a humorous gal, dont you? Almost everything in your post was humor. Yippee skippee... hehe. I havent heard that before, only yippee. I bow to the master. Thanks, but thats so silly I cant take it seriously. πŸ˜› The part of about superhero was so funny I laughed a little while reading it. Now try PlugChecker, now that you got it downloaded...

    • I'll work on it this week and post my findings. Thanks.

    • PlugChecker's...not...working. It keeps asking me to locate the EV Data file. So I use the file>open file> from the menu. But when I open my EVO file with PlugChecker, none of the EV data files show up in the window. Hmmmm.

      Read Me from PlugChecker 1.16:

      1. First, all the standard EV files (EV Data, EV Titles, EV Graphics and EV Sounds) must be in the same folder, just as they are when playing EV. Furthermore, this folder must also contain a folder named Β“EV Plug-InsΒ” which itself contains the EV Tuner file.
I did thist. Does EVO have a tuner?

      2. Load your current version of the standard EV files with the menu command 'Update EV Files'.
There isn't an option for the menu command 'Upadate EV Files'.

      3. Open the EV plug-in of your choice with the Open Plug-in menu command.
I can do this, but when I open the folder, there no files show up.

I did a search through the Dev Boards and it seems half the people said PlugChecker doesn't support EVO, but the other half said it works. Ack. I did a search with Yahoo, the ixoft DYNA Systems web page is outdated. I did find there is a PlugChecker 1.5.1. Do you know if it is available? and where? I am going to post this on the Dev Boards to see if someone knows.

I think they do, it's called "Sample Plugin".
