    • Falcanad sat in his chair, outside a hill sloped down into an open field. Native grazing animals patiently lumbered around, as if waiting for something that would never come. He had no doubt, that his species superior intellect would prove that successful colonization would be possible, though it would be difficult. They would do again what they had done once before. Falcanad was contemplating the problems at hand. How could he increase the sublight engine output without blowing apart the entire assembly? How could he increase the acceleration factor without vibrations tearing the ship apart? Work into new propulsion engines would be torn away at by his eager voracious laboratory scientists, like a powerful rozara snake on the Gadzair homeworld. A place they would never come back to. It was their destiny, to travel among the blackness of space, among the void, stars hanging, floating. Falcanad would tool around with the different components of the drive. A drive with a radical new internal geometric shape, and structure. The plan was all in his head. The last and most difficult problems were nothing his advanced mind could not handle. Once he got down to working, A new starfighter would be born...

    • Hank Zorin walked down to the lower levels of Profit EnterprisesŠ Research and Development Building. This was where the "cutting edge" technology was developed. Or, so they wished. Their two most brilliant scientists had been hired away by their main competitor, Infinity Industries. Since then, the research had lagged, and whatever had been created since frankly, was worthless. Zorin had hopes for this new primary, but he wasn't holding his breath. As the elevator doors opened, he saw his head researcher, Alvin Scott, craning his neck around what Zorin assumed was the prototype.

"How have the tests turned out?" Zorin asked.

"Well, to be honest sir, it really didn't meet our expectations. The rate of fire is definitely an improvement over other models, and the damage excellent, but " Scott trailed off.

      "But what?" Zorin barked.

"The ammunition is extremely inefficient as far as weight requirements. To put it simply, if we cram the holds of the largest ship out there, not to mention our own ship coming out, and mount two of these primaries, the ship could fire it weapons for about twenty seconds. I don't think it will ever work."

"Damnit! How are we ever going to be competitive?" Zorin asked incredulously.

"I've heard rumors of a primary in the works over at the UE labs that is highly efficient. I don’t know what it is or what kind of damage it will do, but it should be better than anything made to date."

"Really? Alright, clean up this disappointment, and go on to the next project."

Zorin was already contemplating his next move. He would need to learn more about this weapon. He was sure that UE would only give out this weapon to government sanctioned companies, and Profit Enterprises wasn't on the list.

Jason Wallace woke up sprawled on a cold hard metal floor. As the fog of sleep wore off he saw that he was in a 6'x6'x6' metal cell with a force field door. The events of the previous night started to come back to him. He hadn't had enough money with him to post bail, so he was thrown in here. Suddenly, the force field door vanished, and a rather short guard stood in the entrance. "Lets move along, Wally," he grunted. "It’s Wallace, and where am I going?" Wallace inquired. "You have a visitor," he replied. Wallace was marched over to the visiting section. He sat in front of a man, almost thirty, average looking, and completely unfamiliar.

      "Who are you?" Jason asked.

"Travis Frey, I work for Profit EnterprisesŠ" Frey replied.

      "And why are you here?"

"I thought you might like me to shed some light on what happened last night."

"Okay, who were those men and what were they after?" Jason asked.

      "They worked for Infinity IndustriesŠ"

Jason paused, but just for a minute. Infinity had tried to hire him, but he turned them down.

"They were out to kill me because I wouldn't work for them? What's the hells with these companies?"

"They wanted you dead so that you wouldn't work for their competitors. As you well know, it takes an above average individual to be able to fly, but someone with your capabilities can point out imperceptible problems with a craft, being invaluable to the development of a spacecraft."

"And I take it, you're there competitors?"

"Yes, we are. We would like you to work for us."

"To be perfectly honest, I've had enough of big companies and their tactics."

"So you won't work for us?"

      "No"

Frey folded his hands and contemplated that. Then he smiled and acted like someone who had a card up their sleeve, and was waiting for the right moment to play it.

"How long do you think you could be in here?"

"Oh I don't know. Could be a few months, could be decades. Depends on the courts."

"How would you like to be out of here .oh lets say ten minutes form now?"

"Spell it out." Wallace was curious, but hated these kinds of games.

"I could post bail, and clear your record with the authorities."

      "What will it cost me?"

      "Your signature on this contract."

Jason picked up the contract and started reading.

"Ten years with the company?!? You have got to be joking!"

"That or ten years in prison. Your choice."

"From the looks of things, I really don't have much choice."

Frey smirked, and smugly replied, "Well then, all there is to do is sign the contract."

Jason picked up his pen, and slowly signed the paper. Even though he would now be free, it felt as if he had signed away his freedom.

All Frey said was, "Welcome to Profit Enterprises."

The crowds were small, only the privaleged hundred thousand who were most important were sent in the first wave. For the naming celebration of a planet every one congregated around the central pillar for the capital building. Amid the chaos a voice cried into loudspeakers with crushing sound.

"This is our home. As the prophet Nadej of old led her people to the promised galaxy before the divide, so again shall we lead our people to live. Our Nadej stands as a living memorial to the savior of our race, and the chosen one of Bir." For minutes afterward even the deafening volume of the amplifiers could not make it through the cheering crowd, the faithful, who had been given a new home, a retreat, wherein to dwell. Safe from the worries of the other governments and with enough knowledge to protect themselves indefinitely.

      Life, Death. What's the difference?

    • A blindingly bright pinpoint of light appeared in an empty system...
The small point of light slowly expanded, and a sleek white vessel bearing the symbols of humanity entered the system.
"Sir, all systems appear to be funtional."
"Good. Any sign of life in this system?"
"No, sir. It's just like all the others. Besides, I'm sure you know that the chances of there being aliens out here is one in billions... The government wasted their money. There IS no other life..."
Suddenly the scientist at the radar looked at them.. "A ship's about to enter the system..."
"What? The president wouldn't have sent a ship to follow us... "
"Um, sir. It's not a human ship. It's coming from the wrong direction. Besides, it's 100 times bigger than our biggest ship..."
"Well lets wait here... Perhaps we can bring a message of peace to the president..."
      -----------------------------------------------------------------

"Borb, we've detected an alien craft."
      "Excellent. Initiate weapons systems."
"Aren't you at all curious? This is a new race..."
"So? We don't need help with anything... We only need slaves. We might as well capture them."

The humans looked through their screen, they saw the gray and red behemoth enter the system... It slowly approached them, and then the voinians recieved a communication.
"Alien race, we are the humans from earth. We wish to talk to you about peace terms."
Borb used all his self control not to laugh...
"Alright Humans, just come closer. We'll board you for peace talks."

As the humans slowly advanced, the voinians slowly armed themselves with Voinian weaponry...

One of the ensigns on the ship began typing a message to the president.

As the voinian and human ship docked, the humans were nervous with anticipation.
The hatch slowly opened, and before it was even completely open, neutron rifle fire was raging through the scoutship. "Go get the weapons! Now-" The human in front screamed before he took a neutron shot to the chest that made his head land across the room...

It was too late. Before the humans could react, half were dead... The rest were either injured or afraid to move...
One ensign slowly moved his finger along the console... and pressed the (SEND) button, sending a message to the president on earth...

The president was sitting back, waiting for the word that the scoutship had detected alien life...

Suddenly the Vice President of War Efforts knocked on his door... "Come in."
Red dropped when he saw who it was...
The vice president wasted no time.
"Sir, we got a message from the scoutship, and it doesn't look good. The cameras and data from the black box looks even worse. Here's what we have."
      Redchigh read the message quickly...
      ------------------------------------------------------------
      To: President Redchigh
      From: Scoutship I Prototype
      Security Code Gamma

We have good news. We've detected an alien race. They seem to be extremely advanced, and willing to make peace. They've offered to board our ship for diplomacy efforts. We'll reply when we get some information... Wait a minute.. I have a bad feeling all of a sudden.. The hatch is opening... oh no.... We're all dead...
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Redchigh read and reread the message.. He placed the disk into his computer so he can see the external view of the shuttle...
A giant gray and red vessel is in the shot, clear as day...It gets closer and closer, and then the image goes to static.

"Redchigh, I think we have an intergalactic enemy. We need to defend ourselves..."
"With what? We have shuttles... Nothing we have compares to that..."
"Then we just have to make something."
Redchigh nodded quietly before writing a message to research and design...

"We're in luck! Our scoutship has detected a large asteroid belt full of minerals.. Unfortunately, we have no current way of retrieving it. We need you to research a cannon that can blow the asteroids into smaller pieces to be retrieved by shuttlecraft. The cannon you build needs to be self- sufficient... No fuel or drainage. See what you can do. The asteroids are drifting towards a star.. So try to have the designs ready ASAP."

Red leaned back in his chair... When he ran for president, he wanted the fame.. Not to be responsible for the fate of the entire human race... He also aired a message onto the public domain...
"Important Message to all Shipyard Construction Companies. Your help is requested by the UE Government. If you are interested in creating a new ship design to explore the stars, then contact the United Earth government as soon as possible. There is a limited amount of funding for this project."

Send another shuttle to the same system.. Computer controlled, we can't put a human in danger.
We're going to pray that it was some kind of misunderstanding...

"This is the property of the Earth Republic... We would like to work out our differences and work out a treaty. Please give us a message to broadcast to our base."

The message was picked up by a voinian fighter nearby, who quickly translated it and forwarded it to the station commander...

"Commander, we've gotten a message from an alien race. Appears to be either highly advanced or incredibly primitive."

      "How do you figure?"

"Well sir, we can't pick up any sign of an energy weapon or shields, and the armor appears to be paper thin from scans."

      Shiratic faction

The sky reddened with the approaching dawn. Mirava was always a beautiful planet by any standards, the green landscape was tinged by a slight violet due to the different composition of the plant-life, the trees grew literally kilometers into the sky with bases anywhere from nine centimeters thick to half a kilometer. It isn't surprising that the Miranu mirror this image with their buildings, skyscrapers that reach into space, to collect satellites and record data. Before the Dark Ages every faction, every nation, had dozens of buildings that reached beyond the atmosphere, miracles of modern design. Most had been lost in the collapse at the beginning of the War, but three still stood. Giant space-elevators, miracles of modern technology and the strength for the shipyards in orbit of the planet.

The Shirat stood in a massive elevator complex adjacent to, and supporting, an office complex. The seperate pods of the elevator each flew to different floors at different speeds, the entire travel time from surface to shipyard was only a hundredth of a day, a trip the monarch could hardly afford to take lightly. "Ur Kalie, what is it you are bringing me to see?"

The young engineer was practically bubbling with enthusiasm and his words came out a little too fast. "Shirat we've got the first prototype out. It's everything we wanted the ship is elegant, sleek and brilliant."

The monarch paused for a moment, "I've seen the designs, why would I need to see the vessel?"

"Shirat, the vessel is yours! The public needs to see you command the pilot for the new world. The broadcasts demand it."

      "Why wasn't I told earlier?"

"You weren't?" The Shirat shook her head. "The news has been on all viewstreams for nearly a week."

"I'm afraid I don't have time to tune in often, anymore." The elevator slowed and dissolved on the floor, leaving the monarch and the engineer to gaze at the new vessel, and the thousands of recording computers held from every angle, every stream. "I guess it's too late to refuse, I'll just go ahead and order the ship to do a short test flight. Where should I send it?"

"We have a prearranged destination, just tell the pilot to go and he'll flip on the auto-pilot. From their you'll take a scenic route around the system." The engineer hesitated as the Shirat stepped onto the loading platform.

      "Are you coming, son?"

      "No Shirat, I'm not authorized."

"You are one of the primary builders aren't you?"

      "I helped to design her..."

"And you want to come along?"

"I want to see how she flies, all the bugs have been tested out, but all I see are the reviews."

"Then come along Ur Kalie, I need someone who can tell me what I'm seeing."

The young man's eyes lengthened so much that it was surprising that he didn't go blind from the light. "Thank you Shirat! Thank you, thank you!"

The Shirat and the engineer walked into the vessel where the monarch motioned towards the pilot sitting in the front chair and the ship lifted off vertically. The elegant wings allowed take off and departure from land, but this was merely a propaganda flight for the Shirat's popularity. The engineer sensed something that wasn't right, he was well accustomed to rules about the flight, after all they had forbidden him from flying. "Pilot where are the other two crew members, this vessel isn't authorized to fly with any less then three trained members."

The pilot turned his chair around and pulled the trigger on the weapon in his hand. The monarch dived towards the pilot without a second's hesitation, even as the body of the engineer falls to the ground. She extended a clawlike knife at the assassin as he fired again, but the quick movement of the Shirat caused him to miss. He pulled his gun up to protect his head where the knife was coming down as a last ditch defense and the monarch shifted her blow to the lower abdomen and followed up with a quick jab to the throat. The assassin gurgled slightly and falls to the ground, just a few meters from the corpse of the engineer.

      Life, Death. What's the difference?

    • Falcanad ponderously roamed around the field below the main complex of Primafora , First Salvation. His newest creation had brought him appreciable recognition. Nothing a sentient mind could not accomplish, if it’s mind was set on it. The power of sentience. By nature, Falcanad could like nothing more than to be secluded, away from busy settlements. Living with the native species. Nomadic. A rich and unspoiled world, unknown to the touch of an advanced space faring civilization. Falcanad would like to keep it in such a serene state. But for the continuation of his faction, This was necessary. It was a way of life, such to live and change their ways as quick as they were acquired. He was sure this would not change. Nomadic.

      "Captain Falcanad!"
Suddenly, a desperate and concerned voice woke him out of his reverie, tunneled through his headset-comm.
Instantly, Falcanad was aware and curious as to the situation.
“Captain, we have had a report of a small fleet of unfamiliar ships 12 hyper-jumps away.”
Falcanad decided to act immediately. He and Aza’nori decided to divert a scout of 3 Creceent fighters to investigate. They were specially equipped, having extra internal and external hyperspace fuel tanks. In alacrity, they were in-system with the exotic ships. One, a silver white dagger, was heading into range...

    • It had been four days since the mysterious ships had been reported, and Aza'nori was determined to find out exactly WHAT they were before the fighters reached them. Pouring over mountains of data he uncovered two obscure references to the silver vessel they were about to confront. The first was the remains of a schematic of the craft, but the data was so badly corrupted that it was impossible to determine the vessel's true nature. The second however was a handwriten report of a sighting of a strange ship, a ship that matched the schematic word-for-word bulkhead-for-bulkhead. According to the report it was classified as a primitive (and suprisingly lightly armed) scouting ship. "Its sensors, weapons, shields, communications, and even armor were hopelessly weak--Acourding to our scans..." Asa'nori read "...it didn't even notice us..."

Clearly there was no way such a small ship could harm the fighers, but the pilots might take it the wrong way if the small scout didn't reply to thier hails...War was one thing that the azdgari could not survive...Yet.

      (A few Hours later)

Falcanad was climbing into the cockpit of the half-finished fighter he had been building (no doubt wondering why he had agreed to Asa'nori's proposal). His mission, however, was
nothing to question: He had to stop the 3 pilots that were on thier way before they got to the scoutship, or war would soon ensue...
