There are folks here who might say that dialling the speed right down is a form of cheating. However...
There's an interesting effect when you change game speed. The range of weapons is calculated in terms of a shot's duration on-screen. When that duration is exceeded, the shot winks out of existence. If you're playing at 50%, not only do ships move at half-rate, but their shots do as well. This means that the shots only go half as far before they disappear. Thus, tactics may need to change.
When I first got into EV, many years ago, I thought I was being cunning by playing it at about 85% of full speed. In actual fact, I was making the game harder. The 'Monty Python' never occurred to me, until I cranked the speed back up... it was simply impossible! Nowadays I leave speed at 100% for combat, increasing to 225% (and doubling with CAPS) when I'm waiting for shields to recharge.
