    • World War Two Plug

      hey everyone
I have a great idea for a full conversion plug-in, but I lack the time and know-how to make all of it. It is a total conversion plug-in that recreates the World War Two naval wars. I could probably make most of the graphics and the sounds for it, and I have the plot written, as well as the layout. I have pretty much everything except for the actual plug-in. So if anyone would be willing to continue with this potentially great complete conversion plug-in, give me a holler at Rexbo2002@aol.com, and I'll try to get you the outline of the plug-in, and if you are really serious, the whole storyline and some of the graphics. This could be a great plug!

Be warned: This could take a long time!

    • I can't tell you how anxious I am to see U.S. battelcruisers in the Pacific going after Japanese carriers while trying to pick off Kamikaze fighters before they reach their target...in the depths of outer space. How do you intend to change the background? It does sound like an interesting idea, and I'd be happy to do some historical research for the project if it gets off the ground, but I definitely think the scene I depicted above would be quite odd-looking.

P.S. Atherton, huh? Pretty close to me, I live in Campbell.

    • yeah, the background is the only big hitch I have with this plug, but as a BIG TIME world war two fan, I just envision EVO as the ideal platform for this plug.

If you want to make a complete list of ships/naval planes/subs during world war two, that would be just great, so I could find images off the internet and try to make graphics, that would help a lot.

If you have any specific wants, or communicate faster, e-mail me at Rexbo2002@aol.com

      THANKS!

Sure thing, you'll just have to wait until Nova comes out for the background thing. I'll see what's available on the period fleets. Are you planning on doing the Pacific theater, the European, or both?

    • I was debating whether to go all-out and make a complete WW2 plug with All nations (U.S., Japan, Germany, England, Italy, Russia (despite little participation, they were there too)), or whether to make a pacific war plug, with only the U.S. and japan, but that seemed a little too closed plotwise. I am leaning towards the all-out version, because it just makes for a better plot, and a bigger universe (naval bases in all theaters of war!) and an all out more complex universe.

    • This has already been done, in a plug called (something like) Escape Velocity: Overflow 1942. I suspect your subconscious supplied the idea.

With respect to the space setting, there's not a whole lot you could do. You could turn the stars dark blue, if that'd help... but the background has to stay black. Small planet graphics don't exactly make great 'islands' or 'ports' and how hyperspace might be explained I cannot imagine!

Still, it's a cute idea. Which is why it was done before. The plug is (at least was) available for download. I seem to recall that there's no missions, but you can experiment with flying a variety of ships and carrier-borne fighters.

Maybe you could get the author's permission and develop the plug further.

    • Well, I just perused the WWW for a few minutes to see how easy information is to come by. There's tons of stuff on the American fleet, so I'll have to see how much I can find on the others. I imagine some of the more famous vessels, like the U.S.S. Indianapolis and PT-109, will be the primary pers. I'll e-mail you some links that go directly to informative sites once I collect some more of them.

    • Hey VonianAmbassador
I had no idea that there was another plug made about this, because I have searched far and wide for something like this, and found nothing, so I assumed that nobody had taken the time! I still can't find the plug you are talking about, but If you have any more information about it, please inform me! Thanks for bringing this to my attention, and this only helps this plug

Err... I turned the background green before by experimenting with the pallette supplied in EV. Sure... ALL black goes green but I remembered it working...

    • Ooh Ooh! you could make the person wear a blue cloaking device! That would be like a submerine "submerging!" If only you could make a torpedo weapon that could be fired from cloak...

    • In truth, if you want to create a WWII computer game you could probably find a much better starting-point than the EV engine. If you just love the EV series so much that you want to stick with it, then fine.

How about making it so that the player must fly a fighter? Give all ships a turn rating of extra extra extra bad. Maybe ten degrees per minute... maybe less... maybe none! Give ships a very, very bad acceleration and a much lower top speed. That way, convoys of ships will chug more realistically across the map, giving you time to attack them with torpedoes, mines, bombs and cannon.

      For realism:

      • Ships would all need to be dreadnought-sized.

      • You'd need to think of a way to stop ships flying through each-other... unless they're submarines.

      • You'd need to find a way to stop planes from being destroyed by torpedoes and mines

      • You'd need to find a way to prevent planes from sitting motionless

      • I still have no solution to the 'hyperspace' problem... not unless you set the whole scenario in a single system, so there's nowhere else to hyper to. Single systems can still be fun battlegrounds - consider New Scotland / New Ireland in EV.

Hello, Russia was the nation that turned the tide of the war in Europe. Stalingrad was the most important battle in the war, D-Day only succeeded because all the Germans were off fighting the invading Russians. And 20,000,000 people dying from Russia isn't exactly no participation. They weren't involved in the imperialist part of the war, that occured with Japan/US, but then, apart from Australia, only the US and the Japanese were involved in that theater.

    • What you could do is make the stars huge (like 250 x 250 pixels) of blue, then they would overlap and make it look like water....

As for crashing ships, you could simply say "ignore it" smae with the planes sitting in mid air, its a game that would be fun, forget some of the minor details....

As for the torpidos and bombs.....
      I don't know....

    • Hey DiddlySquat
The Russian Army did turn the tide of the war, but the Russian NAVY did, well, diddlysquat! This plug-in will be the about the NAVAL side of world war two.

Thanks for the weblink voinainambassador and the little glitches that would come up, but i mean, i'm not going for absolute realism here, just a plug in that would give a new twist to EVO. Thank you though!

I am still looking for people who might also want to participate in this plug in as a programmer/graphics editor person!

    • I have a complete list of all the ships/planes that will be on the american side of the plug-in, as well as the weapons they will be using. next up are the ships/planes/weapons that the Japanese will have. Once this is finished, I will move on to the plot, and hopefully by then someone will be kind enough to offer their services as a programmer for this.

We need help! Don't be shy!

    • Has anyone managed to unpack a copy of EV:Overflow 1942? I don't know of anywhere else it can be downloaded from, but it'd be great if it was added to the Ambrosia downloads section. Perhaps some public-spirited member of the EV community would oblige?

    • Once everything else has been finished, send me it and I'll hack the background
      to something nicer.

The problem is, though, that you won't be able to change from land to sea, or
have specific details other than planets that look like/are cities.

PS: This is all only if I get an iMAc soon. 🙂

    • Speaking of WW2, I actually bothered to get everything expanded correctly for Overflow 1942! If anyone would like it, I could post it on the plug-ins page, or I could e-mail it to you directly, if you ask nicely! heheh
I have put all the files directly into .sit format (you should've seen what they were in before! what the heck did that guy do?)
