    • EV:O = Unrealistic?

This question has been troubling me for some time...well...not really.

After blowing several Vonian Cruisers up with a pilfered UE Fighter, it dawned on me (At last) that the ship system in EV:O is very unbalanced.

What are known as "Warships" are really just slow fighters with more ships. An Arada, for example has the ability to pack more punch than a UE Cruiser, since it can carry more cannons. If EV:O were real life, warships would carry hundreds of turrets, massive fighter bays, and be able to reduce entire planets to slag in moments.

Yet here I am, destroying cruisers which "rapidly dominate any warzone..." with ships sporting crews in the double digits.

    • It's a game. It's not supposed to be real. If you stop and think about it, the entire concept is insane.

    • I made a small TC plug that changed that, it added a new dimension to that game entirely. When I played EV and EV:O for the first time I wondered why Capital warships didn't have weapons befitting their size, that could destroy similar ships in 5-15 hits. The distinction between capital ships and fighters was very marked. It was a bit more real in this respect, my Sedan Class interceptor had less than a snowball's chance in hell of taking on a Marathon Class cruiser on it's own and surviving more than 20 seconds, when the cruiser's Fusion Torps could wipe it out in a single shot and it's Storm Turrets (Pulse firing beam weapon) made sure it never lived past the first attack run. This changed the context of the fighting totally for the player, it was virtually impossible to complete any of the game objectives in any ship smaller than an EV corvette (equivalent)

    • It wouldn't be easy to make EV:O more realistic with respect to the discrepancy between fighters and warships. The problem lies in the concept of gun slots. In unmodified EV:O, a warship has up to eight gun slots (Voinian Cruiser with six neutron turrets and two rocket turrets).

Even if I gave outfitters a few extra weapons; heavy blaze cannon, light blaze cannon, etc., with tonnages to make them suited to different sizes of ship, it would be very difficult to ensure that a player with a warship selected a realistic mix of weapons. There's only one kind of gun slot, and no way to require that some slots on some ships are filled with short-range, rapid-fire weapons, while others are given over to long-range weapons with a slower rate of fire, and little chance of swatting a fighter.

Still, as a game, it works pretty well, doesn't it?

All the Alliance military ships in my plug were named after large historical battles.
      (Not the Bungie game :p)

Don't tell me you've called some of your ships "Bulge" or "Jericho." 😛 😉

How about "Hastings," "Issus," or "Zama."

    • Still, if you'll look at nearly any well-written science fiction novel, warships are more or less huge hunks of metal with guns. Lots of guns.

After all, they ARE called "Capital" ships, aren't they?

I wasn't saying, either, that the weakness of warships were a detraction from teh gameplay, just that it isn't the most realistic game on the planet.

      Long live Ev:O!

      Actually, it would be easy.

      Modify Gun and Turret slots.

First of all, give warships 500+ tons free. Next, just let them have lots of weapons. For realism, most weapons should take less tons, but adding a few super weapons like you find in webstories (your 200 ton laser type weapon) might help.

Now, if you want different types of weapons for fighters and cruisers, set one to take gun slots, and another to take turret slots. Voila.

And use Resedit to change the words "gun slot" and "turret slot" to "light weapon slot" and "heavy weapon slot", or some such.

    • The second I saw this topic heading, I immediately began "Of all the crazy messed up sh..." but then I figured everyone has the right to ask a question.. ah well..

It's a game, not virtual reality. And yes, it is unrealisitic.. But remember the balance between warships and fighters.. Warships can shoot, Fighters can move. A skilled pilot can dodge incoming fire for hours! So no, a warship cannot immediately reduce a fighter to rubble unless it gets a perfect lock-down or one hell of a targeting AI.

By the way, thought police.. where is your plug and what game is it for? EV or EV:O?

    • Hmmmmm... Very good point. However, I doubt warships should carry hundreds of turrets and reduce planets to slag within moments. 🙂 A more satisfying solution would be to probably upgrade warship strengths by x2. That would make a lot more sense probably.

However, in real life, destroyers can be killed by one single missile. Whole battleships can be decimated by two or three PT boats. A carrier can be totalled by three well-placed bombs. But eh, with that it wouldn't be very fun. 🙂

It was for EV:O, but I never managed to finish it.

It did have a few features that I liked though (for example, systems would be conquered by different governments without the player's direct intervention).

    • Yeah, Carno, and unless I'm mistaken Nova is a little more "fire this secondary and watch the fireworks" style, isn't it?

Hey, maybe some lovely beta tester could tell us!

Still, I think it would be neat if warships had the correct balance, and it would give a lot more room for new ships (old warship strength ships, and such)

      I might do that.

    • Hey guys,

This is my first post and I have something to add to the mush. Now I don't know for in-game terms but I understand the problem in RL terms.
See up until recently, past 150 years, the armor tech always outshined the weapon tech. But that changed and I think that around 2040 or so that it will change back. The reason for this is nanotech which will alow for better aloys and such. So anyways my point is that by the far future that one or the other should be better, either armour or weapons. And it would be different for each race. Well thats my two cents and hello.
